Chapter Twenty-Three: The Mask Goes Back On

Rose POV

The morning light comes through the curtains whether I want it or not. I stand in front of the mirror in black, hair pulled back so tight it pulls at my temples. My face is empty. I made it that way on purpose, one muscle at a time. I practice it twice. Chin level. Eyes flat. Mouth still. When I get it right I stop.

The diamond is still at my throat. I haven't taken it off. I don't look at it.

Chapter Twenty-Five: ThreeKai POV"Three."Derek's scream rips through the concrete the second the number leaves my mouth. It isn't a word. It's animal terror, pure. Tears and blood pour down his ruined face. His body thrashes against the chains so hard the metal bites deeper into his wrists. The echo comes back off the walls. The man holding the phone flinches. I don't. My finger stays on the trigger for one long, deliberate second. I let him feel the second. I watch the pulse jump in the hollow of his throat. Then the corner of my mouth lifts in a slow, cold smirk."Good choice."I signal with two fingers. One of my men dials the pack council's emergency line and puts the phone on speaker. He holds it inches from Derek's bloody mouth. The line connects. A formal voice answers. A woman, clipped, bored, the voice of someone eating lunch at her desk.Derek's voice shakes so badly the words almost come apart, but he says exactly what I told him to say."This is Alpha Derek Blackwood. Chapter Twenty-Four: One… Two…Rose POVAt 7:42 I come down the stairs dressed in black. Hair pulled tight. Face sharp and cold. The diamond is still at my throat and I haven't acknowledged it once. The stairs are quiet. The apartment smells of coffee and onions and something under both that is only him. My stomach tightens before I reach the last step. I tell it to stop. I walk into the kitchen like I own the air in it.Kai stands at the island, shirtless under a dark apron, the knife moving steadily through a carrot. The muscles in his back shift with every stroke. His jaw is tight. Each cut lands in exactly the same place, the width of a coin, as if he has done nothing else all morning. The second he senses me, the blade stops mid-cut.He doesn't turn around."Why are you feeling sorry for him already?"I keep my voice calm. Flat. Ice."I have no feelings for him. And I don't need to explain myself. Release him, Kai. He is still my son's father. I will not have Jay's heart broken o

The painting is on the dresser behind me. I can feel it there. I walk out of the room without looking at it.The apartment is too quiet. I can smell coffee before I reach the kitchen. Kai is already there. Black shirt. Sleeves rolled to the elbow. A faint smear of blood on the edge of one cuff, and he hasn't bothered to wipe it off. He looks up when I come in and the a

Chapter Twenty-Two: The Morning After the Bond Broke Its Own RulesRose POVI wake to the taste of metal and shame. My head is heavy. My body is still too warm, though the room is cold. My thighs are sticky. I lie flat and stare at the ceiling and count my breaths until the nausea passes. The diamond is still at my throat. The painting Jay made stands on the dresser. I can't look at it. I look at it anyway. The pieces come in waves and I can't stop them. The wine. Derek's hands on my straps. The lock turning. Kai's arms. My own voice, begging. My own hand between my legs in the back of a car, his name in my mouth. My face burns against the pillow. I press the heel of my hand over my eyes. I would give every account I own for one clean hour of not remembering. My tongue finds the taste again. His blood, dried on my lip.The sheets are twisted around my legs. I kick them off. I sit up too fast. The room tilts. I grip the sheets until it stops. The clock reads 8:17.The door opens withou

Chapter Twenty-One: The Night the Bond Almost Broke HimKai POVThe phone rings twice before I answer.I know the number. I deleted it from my phone years ago, and it still sits in my head like a splinter I could never dig out. My voice comes out as ice."What do you want."Rachel's breath is ragged on the line. There is no wind behind it, no traffic. She is somewhere closed in, somewhere dark, and she is trying very hard to sound amused."Not much. Just wanted to warn you. If you want to save your little princess… you might as well come to this location."A video loads on my screen. Grainy. Shaky. Clear enough.Rose is on a bed. Her limbs are heavy, her head turned the wrong way on the pillow. Derek Blackwood's hands are at the straps of her dress. The door behind him is locked. A phone lies face up on the floor, and my name is flashing on its screen, over and over, ringing out to nobody. My name. She tried to call me, and he took the phone from her hand.Three seconds of silence fol

Chapter Twenty: The Night the Walls Finally CrackedRose POVThe painting sits on my lap. I keep running my thumb along the edge of the frame. I can't make it stop.Kai drives for three minutes without speaking. I count them on the dashboard clock."How did you do it?" My voice comes out rough. "How did you get him to see me?"His hands stay still on the wheel. "You've always been a good mother. Even when they made him believe otherwise." He keeps his eyes on the road. "And I have my charms."My chest tightens. I press the canvas against my ribs. The figure in the doorway, looking back. A smear of blue still shows near the corner where his hand dragged through wet paint. My son stood at an easel and painted me, and he got the way I stand exactly right. The first sob gets out before I can stop it. It's an ugly sound. I haven't made one like it in five years."Today is the happiest day of my life." I can barely push the words out. "Five years. I haven't been this happy once. Not once."
