Prologue –
Aria’s “Change patrol shifts every six hours,” I said gently. “And tell the hunters to check the northern traps before nightfall.” It felt like any other day . Busy. Demanding. But I didn’t mind. This pack was my home, and I loved them like family. They trusted me. They listened when I spoke. They called me Luna—and I carried that name with pride. Because I believed in what we built. Because I believed in him. I felt his presence before I heard him. “Aria,” Kael’s deep voice broke through the air like a warm wind. I look around. There he was—my Alpha, my mate. My heart. His dark eyes softened when he gazed at mine. He walked over and picked me up in his arms. "You're always doing too much," he whispered, pressing his lips against my forehead. "You never stop." "I'm the Luna," I said, smiling. "I want to protect them." "No," he breathed. "You're not just their Luna. You're my Luna." He hugged me tighter, his heart beat firm against mine. . "I chose you. And I'll keep choosing you. No Moon Goddess can change that." My eyes welled up. I had waited so long to be sure of the words ofhearing them. "You are my mate, Aria. My one. I'll never be without you." His finger touched mine, stroking along my cheek as he bent his head and kissed me—slowly, fully. Like I was everything that existed in his universe. After the kiss, he placed his hands over my face. "I need to travel," he whispered. "Alpha summit. I need to protect our allegiances." I felt my heart drop. "Do you really have to go? "I'll be back soon," he vowed. "Keep the pack steady, just as you always do. I trust you with everything." I nodded, struggling to hide the hurt within me. "I'll keep everything going." He kissed me again—this time for longer. "I love you," he whispered. "I love you too." And then turned and walked away. I stood there and watched him, hand pressed against my chest, trusting every word that escaped his lips. Chapter One – The Day He Came Back Aria’s POV I waited for him. Every morning, I opened my eyes and looked toward the forest trail, hoping to see him walking through it. Every night, I kept the window open, hoping the wind would carry his scent back to me. Kael said he would be back soon. But it had been over six weeks. Six weeks of silence. Six weeks of carrying the pack alone. Six weeks of pretending everything was fine—when inside, I was slowly breaking. I did everything he asked. I led the warriors. I cared for the sick. I kept order. I even kept smiling for the young wolves, even when my heart felt like it was falling apart. I wore the mark of his bite on my neck proudly. I carried his promises in my chest like fire. I held onto the memory of his last kiss like it was the only thing keeping me breathing. Because he was mine. And I was his. The morning started as usual. I was working with a puppy in the hut of the healer when I suddenly sensed a weird stillness descend on the grounds of the pack. A hush. Like the air was holding its breath. And suddenly, I overheard the whisper from the members of the pack. "He's back." My heart came to a standstill. Kael. I stood up so quickly that the stool fell over. My hands trembled as I pushed through the doors, dashing out, wanting to hug him and tell him how much I miss him. And he was there. Kael. My mate. My Alpha. My everything. But something wasn't right. He wasn't by himself. There was a woman with him. She was thin and tall, with golden locks that shone in the light. She had her hand firmly wrapped around his arm. And Kael. Kael didn't move away. He let her touch him. He let her hold him. I was frozen. My heart pounding so hard I couldn't hear the gasps from the people around me. He was not the same. Older. Cold. His smile wasn't the same one. I took one step forward. "Kael?" He growled at me, but his eyes were cold. No warmth. No happiness. No relief. Just space. "This is Lyra," he said. His voice was steady, too steady. "She's my fated mate." I couldn't breathe. "What?" I cried out, my voice trembling. "Kael… no. You said… you said that I was—" "I know what I said," he cut in quickly. "But things are different now. The Moon Goddess has spoken." "No," I murmured, shuddering. "You said that you didn't believe in destiny. You said you'd chosen me You claimed me.". "I did," he said, his jaw tightening. "But this is more. The bond with Lyra is stronger. It's fate. I can't help it." I took another step closer, my legs shaking. "So that's it? You come back with another woman and you just. expect me to understand it?" "I expect you to respect my decision," he said coldly. Lyra smiled then. Not shyly. Not kindly. No—she smiled like she'd won something. As though she owned him. I brought my eyes back to Kael. "You promised never to leave me." "I never meant to," he said. "But fate—" "Don't," I barked. "Don't ever say this is fate. You chose me, Kael. And now you're choosing her." He looked away. "I'm sorry, Aria." Sorry. That word shattered me. "I need you to quit your position as Luna," he said. "Lyra will take your place." The world around me started spinning. My stomach roiled. My knees collapsed. He was replacing me. Not just as his mate—but as his Luna. I was nothing now. No longer needed. No longer loved. I froze as he went past me, still with his hand on Lyra's, as if I ever mattered to him. The pack stood there, unsure of what to say. Some dropped their heads. Some turned away. Nobody said anything. I stood alone. Tears had crept up into my eyes, but I hadn't let them fall. Not here. Not in front of them. I retreated slowly, numb, back to the house we used to call home. Every inch of it still smelled of him. His clothes still hung in the closet. His name still engraved on the wood trim of our bed. I dropped to my knees and put a hand over my chest. It hurt. It hurt so much I couldn't catch my breath. He cursed. He cursed. And now he was gone. Not dead. Not kidnapped. Just… gone. With some other woman. I curled my body around me on the ground and let the tears flow, silently and endlessly. And in that moment, I knew— He had broken my heart. But I would not let him break me.Chapter Eight – The Test That Changed EverythingAria’s Point of ViewI couldn’t sleep all night. My heart was heavy, like something bad was waiting just outside the door. When the healer arrived in the morning, I was already sitting on the bed, hugging my knees, trying to breathe. She was quiet and gentle. Her name was Maren. She looked at me with soft eyes, like she knew I was falling apart.“Lucien said you’ve been feeling dizzy,” she said as she opened her bag. “And you look pale.”I didn’t speak. I just nodded and lay down when she asked. Her fingers were warm as she touched my wrist. She closed her eyes and stayed still for a long time. I stared at the ceiling, holding my breath. Then she opened her eyes. Her face changed. She looked at me like I was something fragile. Breakable.“What is it?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. She sat beside me. “Aria… you’re pregnant.”The room spun.I sat up quickly. “No,” I said. “No, no… please, check again.”She placed a gentle hand
Chapter Seven – A Name That Shouldn’t Be SaidAria’s Point of ViewThe room was cold.I sat alone by the window, my arms wrapped tightly around myself. The moonlight fell across the floor like broken glass—sharp, scattered, beautiful in a way that hurt.My chest was still tight from earlier. Their words still echoed in my mind like thunder that wouldn’t fade.“She’s used goods.”“She doesn’t look like Luna stuff at all.”“What if she can’t produce an heir?”I swallowed the lump in my throat, but it stayed. Heavy and thick. Why? Why did they look at me like that? Was it because I wasn’t born of power? Because I had already been someone’s Luna once before? Because I had been thrown away like something unwanted?I stared at my reflection in the glass—red eyes, pale skin, lips that trembled.I’m not enough for them.I’ll never be.The door creaked open behind me.I stiffened, my heart skipping.Lucien.He walked in slowly, his boots echoing against the wooden floor. His presence filled th
Chapter Six – Not Good Enough Aria's Point of View The moment I entered the large hall with Lucien, my heart began racing too fast. The hall was filled with individuals—wolves, elders, ranked members, warriors. They were all well-dressed, seated at a long table, laughing and joking until we came. And in a flash… silence. Every set of eyes looked at us. But not a welcoming one. Not a friendly one. Their eyes were cold. Piercing. Judging. It was as if I'd walked into flames with bare feet. I breathed slowly and kept my head lowered. My hands, deep in my sleeves, were already shaking. Then someone broke the silence. Low and husky. "Is that. Elara?" I looked up. It was a man—tall, proud, with a jawline like Lucien's. But his eyes weren't the same. Not serious eyes like Lucien's. They were sneering. Ice. He regarded me as if I were something filthy on the ground. He snorted after a moment. "No. She's not. Elara wouldn't return. Not
Chapter Tfive :The Warning" Aria's POV I slept soundly when I was roused awake. "Wake up," a cold, harsh voice ordered. I opened my eyes and sat up quickly, panting for breath. I looked around at the unfamiliar room. My heart pounded as memories came flooding back—Kael… Lyra… rejection… rain… and then the dark-eyed man who had borne me. Lucien. He stood beside the bed, his arms crossed, peaceful but uninterested-looking. "You have to come on out of there. My parents came back. They need to see us both in the big pack room." I blunked up at him, spooked and wondering. "Your parents…" "The Nightfang Pack Alpha and Luna," he told me. Nightfang. That was that place's name. Lucien strolled over to a chair that had clean clothing folded on it. He scooped them up and handed them to me. A long flowy dress, dark blue, with silver on the sleeves that was embroidered. It was simple but beautiful. "Wear this," he instructed. "You need to be dresse
Chapter Four – A Pretend Luna Aria's POV I slowly opened my eyes. The room was strange. It didn't smell like home. It didn't smell like Kael. I was lying on a nice bed, warmer than I'd been in a long time, but on the inside. I was freezing. My heart was heavy. My chest ached as if it had been slashed open and drained. I slowly sat up. My body hurt, but nothing compared to my heart. I looked around. Wooden walls, curtains drawn back. Light outside. It was morning. The room was quiet, peaceful, but inside me. there was a tempest. Then it all came back to me. Kael. Lyra. The rejection. The betrayal. The way they kicked me out like nothing. Like I didn't exist. My eyes stung with tears, but I did not cry. Not again. I had no tears to spare. I touched my neck out of habit, where Kael would leave a kiss. It was empty now. No mark. No connection. Just shame. The door creaked open abruptly. A man walked in. He was tall. His footfalls w
Chapter Three – The Stranger by the Water Lucien's POV The sky was already a warm gold as I made my way deeper into the woods, my boots sinking softly into the mossy ground. The trees were whispering about me, serene and still, but my heart was far from that. I was supposed to be looking for Gerva leaves—a medicinal plant our healer had asked our pack to obtain. One of the puppies was running a fever, and she had said the leaves might be able to lower his body temperature. That is the only reason I came out here. Not to think about her. Not to feel this ache again. But I did. Every step I made, I remembered how my mate would smile. How she would hum when she brushed her hair in front of the window. How she disappeared into thin air. Two years. And yet, I looked for her face in each crowd. Still followed each whiff of scent that was like hers. Still carried her name as a wound I never wanted to heal. Elara. I closed my eyes for a moment, th
