Ronan’s brow lifted even further. He said nothing. For a minute, his brown eyes fixed on me as if trying to read my thoughts. I shifted uncomfortably. For some reason, this man unsettled me. Unlike his brother's golden retriever look of brown hair and blue eyes, he was like a dark monster lurking for his prey. From his dark eyes to the permanent scowl, he gives off the feeling that makes everyone turn in the opposite direction. I would've too, if what I needed wasn't so important. “You’re not my type,” the words rolled out of his mouth. Dressing like this…” he shot a glance toward my outfit. “won’t work for me.” My mouth dropped to the floor. “W-what?” I was utterly speechless. “You heard me.” I let out a disbelieving laugh, tugging my dress lower. “How confident of you to think I’d dress to impress you. I’ve always dressed like this.” “Not in these years?” “And that’s because…” I trailed off. This man was trying to pry answers from me. “Sit.” His voice was low and commanding. I sat on the leather swivel chair opposite him and went straight to the point. “I need the hospital report from the 16th of November.” “I see.” The corners of his lips lifted slightly. The sleeves of his shirt were rolled to his elbows exposing veins that moved as he picked up the pen on his table and began to write something on the document before him. “It took you three years.” He didn’t raise his gaze. “I must say that you’re quite slow, Mrs Whitmore.” “You seem to know why I’m here.” He looked at me for a single second and returned his attention to the document. When he said nothing, I pressed further. “It’s urgent. You have the records of my daughter’s birthday.” “Careful,” he cut in sharply. “I am no hospital’s record keeper.” I bit the insides of my cheek. “You have it. You're the chairman of the hospital.” “And why should I help you with it?” He finally let the pen down, the soft click echoing through the office. “Because last time I checked, I was blamed for your child’s death exactly three years ago.” “And that said child is alive,” I revealed. He only shrugged, not the tiniest bit surprised at my revelation. Wonderful. Even he knew. Of course, this man was aware of everything that happened years ago. He had the records. “And I don’t see how that is my business,” Mrs Whit…” “Ophelia.” “I’m amazed.” As if he was amused by my whole tragic situation, he chuckled. My fingers shoved my hair off my face. “You know something about my child. Tell me already.” I snapped. “That is a huge assumption.” He leaned back slowly into his chair, one hand sprawled on the armrest, the other adjusting his tie. “But I am a businessman. Nothing goes for nothing.” My nails bit into my palms. “What do you want? I’d do anything.” I was dying to get the answers that I needed. Not a wink of sleep had I gotten because the questions in my head were like a tornado. “Anything?” Without thinking, I nodded. Amusement danced in Ronan’s eyes. He opened his drawer and pulled out a document. “I haven’t decided yet. But this isn’t free.” I didn’t wait for him to place it fully on the table before I took it, my trembling fingers straightening the paper. Birth certificate. Adilia Whitmore. Mother, Ophelia Whitmore. I looked up when he placed a tablet before me, my eyes widening at the CCTV video on it as if they were struggling to accept it. “Th-this…” ‘16/11/2022’ the exact day I’d given birth. My gaze glued to the screen as it played. While I was unconscious, a nurse stepped into the room with a baby in her hand. She exchanged unheard words with Julius and walked to the crib where my child lay. My body went still as I watched her switch my baby with the one in her hand. The new baby looked immobile and had the same birthmark my child had underneath her foot. But it looked fake. Drawn even. And Julius…. He stood there the whole time. My fingers let go of the tablet. “That’s enough.” He pulled it away. A whole minute passed and I still stared blankly into space, connecting the dots in my head. Julius having my child with his mistress wasn’t a coincidence. He’d watched this happen. He’d stolen my daughter! Why? Why would he steal our child? Why exactly? Who truly was the man that I married? “I do not request an apology for blaming me all these years,” Ronan broke my thoughts casually. “Why would he ever do that?” I didn’t realize I’d spoken that out loud. “It’s simple. Power.” I raised my eyes. He casually picked up his pen and continued with his documents. “My brother loves power more than people.” His gaze again settled on me quietly. “Wh-what power?” “He’s your husband, you should know what he is,” he replied. The chair screeched loudly as I abruptly rose. “You knew everything," I breathed, my voice raising. “Why are you only telling me now? Why haven’t you said anything all these years?” My chest heaved and my eyes blinked rapidly to force my tears back. Ronan didn’t match the fervor of my voice. Instead, he leaned on the table and shrugged, black hair falling slightly over his forehead. “Three years ago, you cursed me for not being my brother’s keeper. I did just that.” Brother’s keeper? How ridiculous. The two were sworn enemies. “You know what? Your entire family is fucking shitty,” I spat, not caring that I’d cursed for the first time in years. “One brother is a pretentious fucking psychopath and the other is an insufferable jerk. I hope you both rot in the worst hell.” Every word came out sharp as knives and once I was done, I grabbed my child’s birth certificate and began to storm out of his godforsaken office. “You want your daughter?” His words caused me to pause just as I held the door’s handle. Loud footsteps echoed behind me and when I turned he was right before me. He towered over me, hands crossed behind his back. “Isn’t that what you want? To get your daughter back and make him suffer?” Alia’s face flashed in my head. Her round green eyes when she peered up at me and genuinely told me that she liked me last night. He was right. I needed her. I desperately wanted her back. And for sure, I wanted Julius to pay for his sins. For subjecting my daughter to a woman who didn't even care to research her condition. For deceiving me with practiced love all these years. For everything. He continued, “We have a common enemy now, don’t we?” “Wh-what do you want?” He smiled. “You learn fast.” I flinched when his hand suddenly fell on my hair. Seeing my reaction, he returned his hand behind his back and stated. “I haven’t decided. When I do, I’ll surely let you know.”OPHELIA Colors drained from my face instantly. “What did you say?”“Selena is here in the company. Anna reported that she’s making her way toward your office.”Nova hadn’t finished her words properly before the door pushed open behind her and the devil walked in. Selena paused at the door. She looked from Nova to me and then a smile spread across her lips. She was dressed in a white silk two-piece suit, with red heels and a bag.She stepped forward into the office. “Oh, hi there.”“What are you doing here?” I threw the question sharply and crossed from my side to where she stood. Crossing my hands over my chest, I glared at her. “Who let you into this place?”Perhaps it was a sign that I needed to change the security guards in the company.“Who would dare not let me into my father’s property? Especially after he announced it today.”“Announced what?” I frowned. She lifted the phone in her hand to my face. The headline read boldly.‘The Valentino missing daughter finally found.’U
OPHELIAI kissed Ronan.I fucking kissed him.Worse, I got rejected. Two days later, even as I sat at my office table, my eyes fixated on the file before me, Ronan’s words still rang in my ears. ‘You’re vulnerable. You don’t know what you’re doing.’Those were his exact words before he left the room that day. I’d been so damn embarrassed that I’d tossed and turned all night. I didn’t get a wink of sleep.Who said that I’d been vulnerable and didn’t know what I was doing? I had been in my right state of mind and goodness, what had even prompted me to kiss him, actually?I chewed my bottom lip as I remembered the taste of his lips on mine. It shouldn’t have felt so good.I was a goner. “What did you say?” Nova’s voice rang out from astride me. She stared at me with an expression mixed with surprise and pride. “I said I kissed him.” She started to smile. Then I dropped the bomb. “And I got rejected, bitch.”Her smile instantly vanished and she straightened in her seat. “Hold on. Le
OPHELIA“My trustworthy doctor carried out the test at the Whitmore hospital. The result is true.”“That’s a lie.”Ronan’s words echoed in my head over and over again. My knees weakened, and I sat on the bed, trying to steady my breathing. Although I knew that the result might end up being true, a part of me had wished— had prayed that it was false.Maybe because Ronan had told me he’d find out the truth. Maybe because he’d always rescued me in every other dire situation and I’d trusted that he’d rescue me on this one too.My breath slowed and I pressed my thumb to my chest to relieve the pressure. I didn’t even notice when Ronan sat beside me until his hand fell on my waist and he made me face him. “It would leave a mark if you don’t care for it.” Then he pressed the ice bag I didn’t notice he was holding to my cheeks. I flinched.“It’s too cold.”“It would help with the mark.”My body slowly relaxed when he gently pressed it against my reddened cheek again, occasionally taking it
OPHELIAThere was no convincing Pa. There was no convincing him that Selena was a fucking bitch whose whole purpose in life was to ruin mine. How could he believe all of these? How could he even try to get her out on bail after everything I told him that she caused. This has to be the biggest betrayal of my life.My Pa had never slapped me. Yet, for the first time because of a stranger, he did.Holding Alia against my chest, I hurried out of the living room, heading out of my PA’s mansion. He tried to call me back to apologize, but I didn’t give him the chance to reach me before I stormed out of the mansion. He admitted it. He’d cheated on my mother when she was alive and she didn't even know until she died. This was the same man I’d looked up to when it came to loyalty. Just when would anyone be loyal? Was loyalty a foreign language to men?“Miss Ophelia, you’re leaving so soon,” one of the servants commented. I said nothing and began to look around for the car that’d brought us f
OPHELIA“The DNA results are out.”Confusion washed over me as I walked to the doctor’s side and made him face me. “What DNA result are you talking about?”He brought out an envelope and stretched it to my Pa. But before it got to him, I snatched it and tore it open, my fingers opening the papers to read what was written.“Miss Selena has a 99.99% paternity match with Mr Valentino,” the doctor announced. Blood thumped in my head drastically as I read the report for myself. 99.99 paternity match. This confirms that Miss Selena, age 25 is the biological daughter of Mr Valentino.”My knees weakened and I staggered backward. Realizing the child was behind me, I forced myself to stabilize and pressed her against my legs. The doctor bowed and walked away. My gaze lifted to my father. He had his head down, his eyes staring blankly at the table before him as he shook his head. How was this even possible? What exactly is going on?I needed a goddamn explanation.“Father. What is going on?
OPHELIAAfter helping grandmother settle into the house, I left the house with Alia for my father’s.As the car rolled to a stop in front of my father’s mansion, a flash of excitement washed over me. It had been a long while since she visited this place. After her wedding to Julius, her visits had been fewer and less frequent until she totally stopped. The servants welcomed her enthusiastically. “Welcome, Miss Ophelia.”“Welcome back, Miss Ophelia.”Then their questioning eyes fell on the child that she was carrying. “Everyone, this is Alia, my daughter. Alia, say hi to the aunties.”Alia who’d been less chatty today angled her body to face them and waved weakly. The five servants began to whisper amongst themselves in surprise but none of them questioned. They made way for us to pass.“Pa is going to get here in no time. " Has the food been made?”“Yes, Miss Ophelia.”I gestured for the guards to bring in the few boxes and balloons that they carried. Because my Pa was getting discha
OPHELIASelena paused the moment her eyes fell on me. She looked from me to the child and before I could blink, she hurried toward us, shoved me out of the way, and bundled the child in a hug. “Alia, dear.”I grabbed the table to steady myself.“Oh, my child. Thank goodness you’re awake. I was alm
OPHELIAMaternity match? My brows knitted together and I looked from Nova to the paper. When my eyes grew sore from staring blankly at the report, I again lifted my gaze to Nova who was staring at me with concern.“What is this?” I asked. “Whose is it?”“Ophelia.”“I don’t understand. Why are you

OPHELIA“Mrs Whitmore, I’m sorry. This death certificate is fake.” The officer at the medical records department informed me.It was mid-morning, and I was standing at the medical records department of the same hospital where I’d lost my baby. Holding the very death certificate they'd issued then.
