As I trudged through the day, the weight of Alex's indifference hung heavy on my shoulders. Every attempt at conversation met with short replies or outright silence. It was like trying to reach someone behind a thick glass wall, where my words bounced back at me, unheard and unheeded. And I knew why.

"Alex," I said, hoping to break through the barrier he'd erected between us, "can we talk?"

He glanced up from his work, his expression carefully neutral. "About what?"

I hesitated, the words catching in my throat. "About... us. About how things have been since... since Marcus."

A flicker of emotion crossed his face before it was swiftly masked. "There's nothing to talk about, Amanda."

"But there is," I insisted, desperation creeping into my voice. "I can't stand this distance between us, Alex. You're my Beta, but you're also my friend."

His jaw tightened, and for a moment, I thought he might relent. But then he shook his head, his gaze flicking away. "Things have changed, Amanda.
