Chapter 534

Author: Lean
After hanging up, Sydney sat back at her desk, her heart still hammering against her ribs.

A few minutes later, Tiffany pushed open the door and found her sitting there, red-eared and flustered, trying to steady her breathing.

"What happened?" Tiffany asked with a teasing grin. "Did Mr. Sterling say something sweet to you?"

Sydney rubbed her nose and pretended to look busy. "Nothing. Go take your shower. I already laid out your pajamas in the bathroom."

Seeing her shy reaction, Tiffany decided not to pry. Whatever tension had lingered earlier was clearly gone.

Once Tiffany disappeared into the bathroom, Sydney replayed the phone call in her mind—the one line that made her heart skip.

"I miss you too."

Just that simple sentence from someone as composed and restrained as Julian was enough to make her blush again.

But she hadn't expected what followed. His voice had dropped, low and husky, carrying a heat that made her fingertips tremble. "My body misses you too."

Sydney kept her focus on Eliana's condition. She saw nothing out of the ordinary. She pressed her lips together and said, "Not very good."Caleb looked taken aback. "Even you and Alan can't handle it?"Julian sat beside them, working through documents with steady movements. His gaze drifted toward them at quiet intervals, yet he said nothing.Sydney had expected Caleb's question."The toxin is too complex. I can't resolve it for now. When Alan returns, he might have a solution," she answered in a plain tone. She understood the truth. Without a full analysis from the research institute, no antidote could be formulated. She still hoped Alan would return to Jouleston soon.Caleb stared at her with disbelief and worry. Then he said, softer than before, "Then wait until Alan returns and check together. Take care of yourself. Don't overwork. You're carrying a child."Julian's brows lifted a fraction. He stayed silent, yet the pressure of his pen against the paper grew heavier.Sydne

Tears shimmered in Agatha's eyes. She tightened her grip on Sydney's hand, then eased it at once, afraid she might hurt her. Excitement rushed through her until she slapped her own thigh."Good. Good!" She repeated the word several times, then shot Sydney a mock glare. "You silly child. How could you hide something this big from me?"Her relief grew when she remembered that her grandson was hopelessly lovesick. If something involved Sydney, he'd accept it without a second thought.Sydney touched the bridge of her nose and explained everything in a steady voice. She laid out her worries and hesitation because she'd want no unspoken barrier between them if they intended to become a family. When Agatha learned that Sydney feared her background might burden Julian, the thought left her aching. "Silly girl. You worry about dragging him down, but have you ever wondered whether he fears being burdened by you, or fears losing you more?"Life had carried Agatha through enough storms to lea

As soon as Eliana was transferred into a VIP ward, Julian guided Sydney into a chair with steady pressure."No matter how worried you are, you cannot ignore your own body," he said.Sydney did not argue. Once she finished checking Eliana's pulse, she already knew that anxiety achieved nothing. All they could do was wait for the research institute to analyze the blood sample. Only then could she formulate an antidote.Yet no matter how she examined the situation, she could not understand how Eliana had been poisoned.Elliot's call arrived at the perfect moment. It was for Julian, but he handed the phone to her at once, aware of the tension in her eyes."Miss, the police have not found anything toxic in the house. But after checking the surveillance footage…" Elliot hesitated.Sydney asked, "Found what?""They discovered that Caleb visited Alan's home earlier today. After he left, Eliana went out in a hurry. Something must have happened. She returned soon after, and not long afte

Julian's expression tightened. "Come on. We'll go to the hospital first."Peter had already heard the commotion and gone ahead to start the car.Inside the vehicle, Julian reached over to fasten her seat belt, but Sydney had already steadied herself and buckled it. Her quick adjustment surprised him.She spoke in a distant, shaken voice. "Do you know what I've feared most all these years?"He lowered his gaze, wrapped her trembling fingers in his palm, and asked quietly, "What is it?""I fear something happening to Alan and Eliana." Her tone stayed even, but her fingers shook harder.Fear pushed through her, yet years of relying on herself made her force calm. She could mask anything else and keep her thoughts hidden. When it involved Alan and his wife, she could not pretend.Eliana had cared for her with a gentleness that even Alan sometimes matched only in part. They treated her like half a daughter. In her heart, they came closest to parents.Marcus had strong medical skills

'Would I?' Sydney had never considered that question.Years of hardship had shaped her into a quiet pessimist. The fact that her biological parents were not drug traffickers already felt like a small miracle. She never let herself imagine anything better. She had even braced herself for the chance that her family might reject her.Sydney lowered her gaze and thought for a moment. She shook her head. "I don't think I would be sad. Otherwise, I wouldn't have met you."Without those years, she never would have lived under the same roof with Julian for nine long years. Her memories of her family had faded, but Julian had remained solid and real. He taught her how to protect herself and how to grow stronger.Julian froze, the pressure under his ribs tightening. He pinched her cheek. "That isn't certain."If the universe's grand plan had changed, they would have met in another place with different identities. She would not have been the small, pitiful girl kneeling in the mourning hall

Raymond's train of thought did not surprise Julian.Julian nodded with a quiet, deliberate look. He followed the thread. "Then what do you think about me and Sydney?"Seeing he was not actually planning to marry Megan, Raymond relaxed. "You already know the answer."He ate his muffins and shot him a sideways glance. "You basically raised her. Who would dare say you are not good enough for her?"On the day their relationship became public, the louder voices would probably insist Sydney was not good enough for Julian, since the public judged people by family background. No one cared that, during the darkest years of his life, Sydney had stayed by him step by step."Really?" Julian lifted a brow in amusement. "Did someone say something?"Raymond frowned, instantly ready to fight on his behalf. "No one yet.""Good."Knowing how hard it had been for them to reach this point, and thinking of the muffins Julian had made, Raymond slapped his chest. "If I'm around, no one will dare say
