Chapter 4

Author: Ginger King
Susanna was in the kitchen preparing the pasta when the doorbell rang, startling her.

"Who is it?" she called out.

The sound woke Howie, who flipped over in bed in annoyance. "Is it the takeout? That was fast."

"I'll check."

Susanna turned off the stove and walked to the entryway, still dressed in only a spaghetti-strapped nightgown with her hair down. She looked through the peephole—and her face instantly went pale.

Over a dozen people stood on the doorstep, seemingly in a pretty good mood.

"What's going on? Why are they here!" Susanna exclaimed in alarm.

She was so frightened that her knees buckled, her face as white as a sheet.

Hearing her exclaim, Howie came out in a bathrobe, rubbing his eyes as he asked, "What's the matter, Susie? Who's here?"

"Quick! Hide!" Susanna whispered urgently, pushing him back toward the bedroom. "My mom, in-laws, and friends are all here, along with a bunch of other people!"

"What did you say?" That completely woke Howie up. "W-What should I do? Where can I hide?"

"Go to the bedroom! Lock the door and don't make a sound!"

Susanna shoved Howie into the master bedroom. She didn't even have time to tidy up the lingering traces of their dalliance in the living room.

The doorbell rang again, pressed repeatedly this time.

"Susanna? Open up! Why aren't you opening the door?" That was Caroline's voice.

"Is she still sleeping in?" Mom's voice rang out as well.

Susanna's legs went weak. She pressed her hand against the front door while hissing toward the bedroom, "Hurry up! Get dressed and hide!"

A flurry of panicked activity could be heard in the bedroom.

Just as Susanna, drenched in sweat, was unsure whether to open the door, I stepped out of the elevator.

"Mom? Dad? Why are all of you standing at the door? Where's Susanna? Why isn't she opening the door?"

Upon seeing me, everyone cleared a path for me.

"I have no idea," Mom complained. "She's taking her own sweet time."

I reached out and unlocked the door with my fingerprint. The lock released with a click.

The door was only opened halfway when Susanna rushed over and pressed back against it.

"H-Honey? Why are you back so soon?" Despite her best attempts to stay calm, her voice trembled.

"I came back early to surprise you!" I said cheerfully as I pushed hard against the door.

"No! I mean… The apartment is too messy! It's like a pigsty in here!" Susanna stammered. "Give me ten minutes… no, five! I'll clean it up!"

"Why bother? We're all family anyway. It's not like we'll judge you just because the house isn't in order," Mom, who was pretty impatient, couldn't wait around any longer.

She even came over to help me push the door open.

One of Susanna's friends also chimed in teasingly, "That's right, Susanna. Don't tell me you're in a hurry to hide the good stuff so that we can't find it, hm?"

One woman alone couldn't withstand the force of so many people. The door opened with a quick swing.

Susanna fell to the floor, the straps of her nightgown slipping off her shoulders.

Everyone else poured into the apartment and saw the sorry state of the living room. Howie's boxer shorts were tossed on the couch. Half-eaten snacks and wine glasses sat on the coffee table. There were tissues scattered across the floor.

Even the smell in the air was musty and reeked of debauchery.

"Goodness me! Did someone break into the apartment?" Caroline gasped as she stared at the mess in shock.

Susanna scrambled to her feet, looking rather pale as she fumbled for an explanation. "N-No one broke in. I was drinking alone at home last night… I drank too much… and didn't… didn't have time to clean up."

"You were drinking alone, you say?" I sneered before walking over to the couch and picking up the pair of men's boxer shorts.

Howie had worn them yesterday.

I dangled the boxer shorts, which were clearly not in my size, in front of Susanna and watched as she broke out in a cold sweat.

"I didn't know you were in the habit of playing around with something like this while you drink, babe."

By the time I got home after giving my statement to the police, it was already late at night. The apartment was a mess, the air still thick with that nauseating stench.I stood in the center of the living room, looking at the home I had once painstakingly decorated, and felt utterly exhausted."Mr. Carter…"I didn't know when Yvonne had arrived. She stood in the entryway with a bunch of cleaning tools in hand, looking at me in concern. "I heard what happened, so I came right away to check on you. That woman! How could she wreck the apartment like this…"Without asking any questions, she crouched down to begin picking up the shards of glass and trash on the floor. After watching her stooped over on the floor, a part of my cold heart warmed again."Don't bother, Yvonne," I said grimly."It's fine, Mr. Carter. I can get it done in no time. Soon, the apartment will be clean and tidy again.""No, it's fine." I shook my head before looking around. "This apartment has been sullied. I d

Even Caroline was stupefied. "Susanna! Y-You borrowed money from a loan shark?""This is fraud, by the way. There's also the crime of forging a corporate seal," I said as I looked at Susanna's deathly pale face. "Betraying your marriage is merely a civil case, but your actions constitute a federal crime. As soon as I hand this USB to the police, guess how many years you'll be spending in prison?"Susanna fell to her knees."Honey… I mean, Mr. Carter!" she stammered almost incoherently, her face covered in snot and tears."I made a mistake! I didn't actually dare to take the loan! I just asked about it… I didn't sign anything! Please, don't call the police! If you do, I'm done for! My mom has no one but me left, and she's too old to handle this kind of emotional distress!""Oh, now you're regretting your actions?" I kicked her away from me. "Why didn't you stop to consider how my parents were going to handle the emotional distress when you demanded half of my own apartment from me?

Mom was shaking with anger as she cried out, "You shameless slut! Where do you think your money is going to come from if my son doesn't work to earn a living?""How dare you hit me?" Susanna screamed as she clutched her cheek, her eyes flashing venomously. "Fine. Since we've already come this far, there's no way this marriage can be salvaged. If you want a divorce, sure. This apartment is worth 15 million dollars on the market. I want half of the money. All of the cars and savings must be split in half, too!""In your dreams!" Mom retorted sharply. "You didn't fork out a single cent, so why should you get a share of the apartment?""Because I'm his lawfully wedded wife! Because I had to put up with him for three years! You don't want to give me the money?" Susanna shrugged defiantly. "Fine. Then I'm not signing the divorce papers."I'll just move Howie in. I have the access card to the apartment anyway. Let's see who wears who down first! I've got nothing left to lose anyway. You s

"A misunderstanding, huh?" I smirked coldly. "Fine. Since it's supposed to be a surprise for me, let's enjoy it properly."I pulled out my phone and connected it via Bluetooth to the 75-inch TV in the living room. "It just so happens that I have a video of how you two were busy 'decorating the apartment for a romantic surprise' for me. Let's all take a look."The very next second, the massive TV screen displayed a scene too salacious for public viewing. Two pale bodies were tangled together. Embarrassingly loud moans and gasps blasted through the surround sound speakers, echoing through the entire living room. The image quality was crystal clear. Even the mole on Susanna's butt could be seen.Howie, who had just been so slick with his words earlier, instantly turned pale and tried to make a run for it, but the security guards deftly blocked his path.Susanna's face flushed red, her fists clenching tightly. Out of nowhere, she rushed over and grabbed my hand, tears streaming down

The living room fell completely silent. Everyone's eyes flickered between the boxer shorts and Susanna. Her face had flushed a deep red."I-I got that pair as a gift to you! I wanted to surprise you!""Oh? They're for me?" I raised an eyebrow. "They're a size large, and I wear a size extra large. You've been married to me for three years, and you don't even know that?"Susanna had no way of responding to my retort. Her lips parted, but no words came out.At that moment, a sound came from the master bedroom. Everyone immediately looked toward the room."Is someone in there?" Dad questioned sharply, his expression grim."No! Absolutely not!" Susanna spread her arms to block the bedroom door, shouting urgently. "It's just a cat! Yes, a stray cat got in!""A stray cat?" Scoffing, I signaled to the security guards at the door. "Guys, please help me catch this supposed stray cat."The two security guards immediately stepped forward and pulled Susanna aside. The bedroom door was kicke
