I watched the insults in the class group chat spiral out of control and hurried to type a reply.

[You guys have it all wrong! I passed out from low blood sugar, and the coffee shop owner gave me that coffee! I didn't pay for it!]

Brooke Rulin, the class queen bee, chimed in with what sounded like an attempt to calm everyone down.

[Come on, guys, don't be so harsh. Maybe Patty really does have her reasons. And she has the right to enjoy life, too… Though… financial aid is meant for people who genuinely need it…]

[Still sticking up for the liar? You're just too nice, Brooke.]

Before I could type out another word, Chuck Grabeel, our class president, jumped in with a sarcastic jab.

[Patty, if you have too much money left over from your financial aid, you can always donate it to someone else. Playing the victim for financial aid on one hand while going to coffee shops to splurge every day is pretty hypocritical.]

Chuck had the hots for Brooke, so naturally, whatever she said was right.

The rest of the class quickly piled on.

[The lies just roll off her tongue. Who faints from low blood sugar and can still leisurely drink coffee?]

[No wonder she managed to get the grant. Her lying skills are top-notch!]

Brooke followed up almost immediately.

[Patty, as long as you admit your mistake, we'll all forgive you. Everyone gets greedy sometimes. You just need to stop making mistake after mistake.]

Forgive me? But I hadn't even done anything wrong!

Everyone was just letting her dictate the narrative, condemning me without rhyme or reason.

My fingers trembled as I typed.

[That's not what happened at all!]

She replied instantly with a voice message, her voice quivering with tears.

"I was only trying to help. I was worried everyone was being too harsh on you. My family struggles financially, too, but I've never even applied for financial aid. I don't understand why you're targeting me like this…"

The moment her message ended, classmates in the chat rushed in to berate me.

[Unbelievable. Brooke was just being nice, and you snapped at her like that?]

[She was trying to mediate out of the kindness of her heart, and you turn around and attack her? What kind of person does that?]

Chuck was furious.

[You're the one who scammed your way into financial aid, and you still think you're in the right? Give up that spot so Brooke can have it!]

Right then, a message popped up from Tanner Rickshaw, our academic advisor, tagging everyone.

[Everyone, report to the classroom for a meeting.]

Taking a deep breath, I forced down the emotions churning inside me and headed to the classroom.

When I pushed open the door, I found the entire class already inside.

Tanner stood at the front, his expression livid. The moment he saw me walk in, he thrust a printed sheet of paper toward me.

I looked down. It was titled "Statement Regarding the Improper Use of Financial Aid."

"Patty," he began sternly. "In your financial aid application, you stated that your family's monthly income is under 500 dollars, and that you face severe financial hardship."

"Yet now, your classmates have provided evidence that you spend 150 dollars a month at coffee shops, indulging yourself. This incident has had a very serious impact, and the college is treating it as a matter of serious concern."

"You'll need to write a thorough statement of self-reflection and admit your wrongdoing. Then I might handle this leniently."

My heart sank.

Tanner hadn't even asked a single question before deciding I was guilty. He didn't care whether his student was wrongfully accused. He only cared about taking the easy way out and avoiding any trouble for himself.

I looked at them and repeated myself, enunciating every word clearly.

"I didn't break any rules. I work a part-time job at a coffee shop. I fainted from low blood sugar, and the owner gave me that cup of coffee.

"If you all don't believe me, I can call him right now, and you can verify it for yourselves!"

Malcolm poked his head out from the kitchen."Did she really apologize?""Yeah," I answered."You didn't forgive her?"I kept wiping the counter, looking down. "Nope. If I forgive her, what would that make everything I went through? I need to hold on to the fact that I didn't forgive her—as a reminder to myself."Malcolm let out a soft chuckle and ducked back into the kitchen. After work, my phone chimed with a voice message from Grandma.I tapped it, and her booming, energetic voice came through."Sweetheart! I took the medicine, and my back doesn't hurt anymore! I'll make some brownies next week and mail them to you. Share some with your boss who's been looking out for you!"I stood beneath a streetlight and chuckled out loud.…Brooke withdrew from the college. I wasn't on campus the day she left, but Chyler told me she'd dragged a suitcase out of the dorm by herself, and her dad had come to pick her up in his car.Later, I saw the college's final disciplinary notice on

Half an hour later, Tanner replied, "Received. We're looking into it now."At 10:00 pm that night, Chuck posted an announcement in the class group chat.[Regarding the malicious posts targeting Patty Thawne that have been circulating online recently, an investigation confirmed that they were posted by a student at this college using burner accounts. The individual's identity has been verified, and they will face disciplinary action from the college. The specific outcomes will be announced in due course.]The group chat went completely silent for three whole minutes. Then someone sent a message.[It was Brooke Rulin, wasn't it?]No one replied.Brooke didn't show up for class for three days straight. On the fourth day, her father came to campus.I ran into him outside Tanner's office. His hair was streaked with gray, and he was standing in the hallway smoking. When he saw me, he stubbed out his cigarette and walked over."Patty Thawne?"I nodded. He looked at me, his lips mo

I stood behind the counter, apron still tied around my waist, suddenly feeling like I didn't belong anywhere in the room.Priscilla's gaze swept over me, her eyes burning with anger and hurt. She didn't know me. All she saw were pictures of her husband spending time with a female college student late at night.I took half a step forward, trying my best to keep my voice steady."Priscilla, those photos were maliciously cropped. Someone's spreading rumors from a burner account, and I've already asked people to report it.""Be quiet."Priscilla looked at me, her eyes red. "I know who you are. You're the young lady who passed out in the shop. Malcolm has been running all over the place for you, what with the security footage, videos, and the sandwich shop owner. I've never seen him care this much about anything in his life. He told me you were about the same age as our daughter, and that he felt bad seeing you struggle!"Her voice caught, and tears spilled down her cheeks."Daughte

The auditorium erupted all over again, and this time, the uproar was ten times louder than before."So Brooke's not actually a student in financial need?""Her dad owns a company, and she still applied for financial aid?""And she was the one who led the charge against Patty?""My goodness. Just yesterday, she said in the group chat that she'd spend every penny on what mattered most. What was she referring to? Her family's one-million-dollar company?"I stared at Brooke. "Brooke Rulin, give the medicine back to me."She stood there, looking completely drained. Chuck reached into the bag behind Brooke and pulled out the crumpled sack of herbal medicine and handed it to me.I took it. All seven packets were still intact. Then I turned and walked out, leaving the uproar of the auditorium behind me.As I reached the door, Tanner's panicked voice called out from the front row."Patty, the college will reinvestigate this whole matter.""I know," I replied without breaking my stride

"Sir, did you give that girl who passed out a cup of coffee?" Brooke asked."Yeah. Her blood sugar dropped, so I made her a cup of coffee," Malcolm answered. "Why?"Brooke chuckled. "Oh, it's nothing. I was just wondering. Did she pay for the coffee herself? It's 5 dollars, right?""No, of course not! What kind of person would I be if I charged my employee for a cup of coffee I gave her after she passed out?"The video stopped there, with the final frame showing Brooke looking down and typing something on her phone. The entire auditorium fell dead silent.I turned to look at the audience. Brooke had her head bowed, her face as white as a sheet.I faced the students and faculty. "I never pretended to be poor. I work part-time until midnight every day. And when I passed out at the coffee shop, the owner gave me a cup of coffee that was worth 5 dollars. That's the whole story. As simple as that."Brooke Rulin, you knew the whole truth from the very beginning. You knew I passed out

During the morning break, a new notification suddenly popped up in the class group chat. Chuck had started an anonymous class poll.[Who do you think is better suited to receive this year's need-based financial aid the most?]There were only two options—A. Patty Thawne or B. Brooke Rulin. In just one minute, voting closed. Not a single person in class voted for me. Every single vote went to Brooke.Chuck chimed in offhandedly, [This is the will of the people. A certain someone should get a clue and give the money back.]Brooke immediately took a screenshot of the unanimous vote and forwarded it directly to the group chat for our entire year, which had hundreds of people in it.She wrote, [Thank you to all my classmates for believing in me. If I'm ultimately awarded the grant slot, I promise to spend every penny on what matters most. I also hope Patty Thawne can see reason soon and admit her mistake. We're all here, waiting for you to come around, Patty.]She was trampling on my
