Seven days.

That number clung to me like perfume, sickly sweet and impossible to shake.

Seven days until the wedding.

I woke up to the soft, persistent knock at my bedroom door. Before I could even sit up fully, it creaked open and in walked Daphnie, carrying a tray and grinning like she’d just won the lottery.

"Good morning, sleepyhead!" she chirped.

I blinked at her. “What time is it?”

“Too late to still be in bed. Come on, get up!” She marched straight to my curtains and yanked them open, flooding the room with sunlight that immediately attacked my headache.

I groaned. “Daph, please. I haven’t even had coffee yet.”

“Exactly why I brought you this.” She set the tray down beside me fresh coffee, warm cinnamon rolls, and orange slices arranged like tiny suns on a porcelain plate. “Breakfast fit for a bride-to-be.”

I sat up slowly, eyeing her suspiciously. “You’re awfully chipper for someone who’s been up all morning.”

She flopped onto the edge of my bed, the mattress dipping with her

  • One Heart, Which Brother?   Chapter 64

He was inches away from me.The old Ken. The one I once knew. The one I thought I’d broken.“I remember everything, Lia,” he whispered. “You kissed me first. You cried for me. You begged me to fight for you. And I”“Stop,” I said, pulling back. My voice was shaky but firm.He looked stunned. “I’m sorry, Ken,” I whispered. “But I can’t go back. I’m… trying with Ruben. It’s not perfect, but it’s something. And I need it to work. I want it to.”He stepped back, jaw clenched.“You were mine first.”“No,” I said gently. “I was never truly yours. Not the way you wanted. And not the way I needed.”He nodded slowly, the pain raw in his eyes. Then he turned and walked away. And I stood there, trembling. Hurt. Confused. Guilty. But certain.I touched the bracelet on my wrist, those three words burning into my skin.Start with now.The next day, I needed air.Not from the mansion, not from Ruben, not even from the hovering security. I needed something real, something not covered in tinted windo

  • One Heart, Which Brother?   Chapter 63

Lia’s POVIt felt… different now.The morning sunlight danced across the marble floor as I walked barefoot through the quiet house. I could still hear faint sounds from the kitchen. Ruben had started making me tea every morning. Chamomile, just how I liked it.It was these small things that made me confused.Because how could the same man who once blackmailed me into this marriage also be the one who tucks me in, kisses my forehead, and pulls a blanket over me when I fall asleep during study? My life was no longer a storm, it had become a careful balancing act.“Good morning, wifey,” Ruben said, appearing in the doorway with a tray in his hands. He always looked frustratingly good in his white dress shirt, sleeves rolled up, black slacks, no tie.I narrowed my eyes. “Are you trying to make me fall in love with you or something?”He smirked. “Is it working?”I looked away, lips twitching. “Maybe.”He walked over, placed the tray beside me, and kissed my temple. “You have two sessions t

  • One Heart, Which Brother?   Chapter 62

The letter sat untouched on my nightstand. Two whole days had passed since Ken left. I hadn’t read it. I couldn’t. I wasn’t ready to feel everything again. The conversation replayed in my mind on an endless loop his voice, his eyes, the almost kiss, his goodbye. It haunted me.And Ruben… he hadn’t said anything. But I knew he felt the shift in the air. The way he glanced at me when he thought I wasn’t looking, the way his hands lingered longer than usual on my waist, the way he held me at night without saying a word. He knew something had happened. Or maybe he just knew Ken had been here. But he didn’t ask.And I didn’t speak. The silence between us was no longer cold it was careful.I sat in my private study that afternoon, a mug of untouched tea beside me and an online lecture playing on low volume through my laptop. My mind was elsewhere. I was trying. I truly was. But how do you focus on economics when your entire world feels like it’s shifting beneath your feet?Ruben walked in q

  • One Heart, Which Brother?   Chapter 61

The late afternoon sun poured in from the glass doors. The house was unusually quiet, the kind of silence that made your thoughts louder. My tutor had left over an hour ago, and I had spent the time attempting to study. But my heart wasn’t in it. Not today.Something felt off.I closed my laptop, pushing aside the textbook on international finance. I rubbed the bridge of my nose, exhaustion setting into my bones, not the kind that sleep cause, but the kind that comes from emotional heaviness.I needed fresh air.Pulling on a light cardigan, I moved toward the balcony but froze halfway through the hallway. My heart stilled. He was there.Ken.Leaning against the wall in his usual careless pose, like he owned every room he walked into. His dark jeans fit like they were made for him, and the sleeves of his black shirt were rolled up just enough to expose the veins in his forearms. His hair was slightly tousled, as though he’d driven fast with the windows down.He looked… breathtaking. An

Ruben left before I woke up.I could still feel the warmth on the other side of the bed, though. His cologne lingered faintly on the sheets, woodsy and dark, like everything about him.I didn’t wake up with a weight on my chest. I didn’t have to brace myself before opening my eyes. And when I walked downstairs, the smell of fresh coffee greeted me.There he was, shirt sleeves rolled up, hair still damp from a shower, flipping through his tablet at the kitchen island like it was just any regular morning and not a scene out of a dream.“Good morning, wife,” he said without looking up.I narrowed my eyes. “You're suspiciously...domestic today.”He grinned without shame. “You say that like I didn’t just install two espresso machines so you’d stop crying over your instant coffee.”I blinked. “You what?”“Check behind the fridge.”Sure enough, hidden in a corner was a machine that looked like it belonged in a five-star café.I turned back to him, stunned. “You remembered.”His eyes met mine

  • One Heart, Which Brother?   Chapter 59

The silence between us was deafening. He didn’t ask.And I didn’t explain. But I could tell by the way Ruben’s eyes lingered longer than usual, how he watched me over the rim of his glass at dinner, that he knew Ken had visited again. He always knew. And yet, he said nothing. It was worse than yelling.I picked at my food, appetite completely lost. The tension in the dining room was thick, like a taut string waiting to snap.“Are the classes going okay?” Ruben asked suddenly, voice calm but distant.I glanced up. His expression was unreadable.“Yes,” I said quickly. “The tutors are good.”He gave a small nod, then went back to sipping his wine.I hated this.I hated how I could still feel Ken’s closeness. How my skin still tingled where his fingers had brushed my cheek. Not because I wanted him. But because I’d let it happen. I hadn’t pushed him away fast enough. I should’ve never allowed that moment to get as close as it did.And I was sure Ruben sensed every ounce of it.When dinner
