It was supposed to be a normal day.

Ruben had promised. Just me, Daph, and the college we’d been dreaming about since we were fifteen.

And he kept his word.

At first, I felt free. Walking down the campus walkway, backpack in hand, head high. Just like any other student. For once, I wasn’t Mrs. Delwunco, I was just Lia. A freshman. A girl with dreams.

But I should’ve known.

Freedom in my world always came at a price.

I never saw them coming.

One second I was laughing with Daph about how dramatic our lecturer looked, the next tires screeched, masked men jumped out of a van, and before I could scream, everything went dark.

I woke up gagged, my hands tied. Blood dripping from my temple. A stinging cut above my brow. My legs ached. My mind was hazy.

They had taken me to a warehouse, cold, damp, and silent except for the crunch of boots and murmured threats in a language I didn’t understand. But I knew fear when I felt it.

And I felt it in every inch of my body.

  • One Heart, Which Brother?   chapter 187

Chapter 187 The night sky stretched endless and velvet-dark, speckled with stars that glittered like scattered diamonds. The Delwunco private jet sat at the far end of the runway, sleek and impossibly large, its polished silver body reflecting the floodlights like a jewel carved out of steel.Ruben had promised her the world. And now, he was delivering it piece by piece. The steps lowered, the red-carpeted ramp rolling out with practiced precision. Lia stood at the foot of it, her long black silk gown trailing behind her, her hair swept back in waves that caught the light. Even in travel, she was dressed like a queen her crown invisible, but her presence commanding.“Everything you ever wanted,” Ruben murmured beside her, his hand brushing hers, tentative but steady. His voice held something rare hope. She lifted her chin, her lips curling into the wildest, smile. “Everything?”His eyes, dark and unwavering, drank her in. “Everything.”Inside, the jet gleamed with extravagance. Gold

  • One Heart, Which Brother?   chapter 186

Chapter 186 The Delwunco name had been written in blood for far too long. Now, in the fading twilight of an empire, two men stood on opposite ends of a silent room, Ruben and Ken, brothers who had once sworn to destroy each other, bound now by scars deeper than flesh. The old warehouse smelled of dust and rust, the ghosts of their past watching from every shadow. Ken leaned against the cracked pillar, his shoulders heavier than Ruben had ever seen them. His face was older, not just in years but in grief. For a moment, they said nothing. The silence between them was the silence of Julian’s grave, the silence of wasted years, of wars that had swallowed everyone they loved. Finally, Ruben broke it. His voice was low, gruff, yet steady.“We’ve lost too much, Ken. More than I can forgive… more than you can undo.”Ken’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t look away. “I never meant for Julian… I never meant for him to ” His voice cracked, and for once, Ken Delwunco didn’t look like the ruthless ma

  • One Heart, Which Brother?   chapter 185

Chapter 185 The morning air was cool, carrying the scent of freshly turned earth and the faint sweetness of lilies that lined the path. The cemetery was quiet, save for the soft rustle of trees swaying in the breeze. For the first time in what felt like forever, Ruben walked beside Lia not as her enemy, not as her regret but as her husband, her partner. Her black dress fluttered around her legs as she walked, simple yet elegant. She didn’t speak, not until they reached the small, white marble headstone carved with Julian’s name. Ruben’s breath caught when he saw it again he would never get used to it, never stop feeling the stab of failure every time his eyes landed on those carved letters.Lia’s knees bent slowly, and she lowered herself onto the grass. She pressed her palm flat against the cold stone as though touching her son’s hand one last time. Her lips trembled, but when she spoke, her voice was steady.“Julian, my love… my baby,” she whispered, her head bowed. “You’ve been go

  • One Heart, Which Brother?   chapter 184

Chapter 184 The house had not been this quiet in years. No arguments echoing through marble halls, no whispers of betrayal trailing in the dark corners. Only the sound of rain dripping from the eaves and the faint hum of cicadas outside the garden walls. To anyone who entered, it looked like peace had finally claimed the house.Lia knew better. She sat in the master bedroom at the vanity, her reflection framed in gold and shadow. She had dressed simply that morning, no elaborate gowns, no veils of mourning, just a silk black slip and her hair loose over her shoulders. Her face was bare, pale, almost translucent in the light.Behind her, Ruben stirred. He was getting stronger each day, his steps firmer, his voice steadier but she could still see the weight clinging to him. The guilt. The near-loss of everything “You’re watching yourself again,” he murmured, his voice still rough with sleep. She tilted her head, eyes narrowing at the mirror. “I’m watching the stranger I became.”Rube

  • One Heart, Which Brother?   chapter 183

Chapter 183 The rain had stopped by evening, leaving the city washed clean, the streets glistening under the pale light of the moon. For the first time in what felt like forever, there was no echo of gunfire, no whispers of bloodshed in the distance. Just silence the kind that didn’t feel like suffocation but like relief.Lia sat on the balcony of the Delwunco estate, a shawl draped over her shoulders. The night breeze carried the faint scent of roses from the gardens below. She closed her eyes and let herself breathe really breathe. For so long her lungs had been filled with smoke, grief, and rage. Tonight, it was just air.Behind her, the soft sound of footsteps. Ruben. He looked pale, still weak from the coma, but he was upright now, leaning slightly on the railing as he came to sit beside her. His hand brushed hers, calloused and warm, anchoring her to him.“You didn’t wait for me to wake up,” he teased lightly, though his voice was hoarse. “You went and made peace without me.”L

  • One Heart, Which Brother?   chapter 182

Chapter 182 The Delwunco estate had not known laughter in months. The walls that had once absorbed screams, shouts, and silence heavy with grief now carried something different softer, warmer, like the echo of a family that might have been.Ruben lay propped against the pillows of the master bedroom, the bandages at his side already loosening as his body healed faster than the doctors predicted. He hated being confined to the bed, hated feeling weak. But every time he tried to rise, Lia was there firm hands pressing him back, lips brushing over his brow, her voice soft yet commanding.“You’re not going anywhere,” she whispered that morning, her breath warm against his ear as she fed him spoonfuls of soup she had insisted on making herself. He smirked, though his eyes softened. “You’re treating me like a child.”“Like my husband,” she corrected quickly, her tone carrying no room for argument. Her hand cupped his cheek, thumb brushing across the stubble that had grown during his recove
