Chapter 1

"Do whatever you want!" my husband, Lucas Gardner, retorted in a furious tone laced with impatience. "You'd better not regret it and come crying back to me!"

In the next second, he ended the call before I could even say anything.

Regret it? I certainly wouldn't.

The only thing I regretted was being so blind as to fall for him back then, especially since I had let myself suffer so much indignity over these years when I had once been known in the business world for being unstoppable and decisive.

As I was in the middle of packing my suitcase, a crying Kimberly Lane came running in. She was Lucas' current assistant and also his first love.

"Selina, I'm so sorry. I was here the other day to deliver some documents to Mr. Gardner, but my period suddenly came. That's why I took one of your pads to use. I didn't think you'd misunderstand.

"Please don't divorce Mr. Gardner. Otherwise, I'll never be able to prove my innocence."

I listened to her insincere apology, my lips curving into a cold sneer. "If I don't divorce him, how else am I supposed to clear the way for you?"

Kimberly's voice instantly became choked with tears. "Selina, how could you say that? I've never thought about interfering with your marriage with Mr. Gardner. I—"

I interrupted her with, "Is it that you never thought about it or that you couldn't do it?"

Back then, the Gardner family wanted Lucas to pick out a wife from among the socialites in the city. As an illegitimate child of the Lane family, Kimberly was the first to be excluded from the list.

Seven years later, the Lane family had long since gone bankrupt by the time Kimberly returned to the country. Thus, the only way for her to get close to him was to become his assistant.

Kimberly burst into even more pitiful crying. "Since you don't believe me, I'll just resign! Is that good enough for you?"

"Do whatever you want!" I tossed Lucas' earlier words to me back at her before lowering my head and ignoring her.

Ever since Kimberly started working as his assistant two years ago, I've brought up a divorce with Lucas countless times. Every single time, she would also say that she would resign.

Now that I was genuinely going to divorce Lucas, Kimberly was still using the same trick to garner sympathy.

Lucas had long since grown tired of my jealous behavior, yet he remained as helpless against her pretentious methods as ever.

"Selina, please don't leave! Don't divorce Mr. Gardner!" Big, fat tears slipped freely down Kimberly's cheeks as she played up the heartbroken, innocent act. She even seized my arm and shook it vigorously, just like in those TV series. "Hit me if you want! Just please, don't be angry anymore!"

With that, she seized my hand and brought it to her face, where she began slapping herself with it.

I watched her terrible acting, my brows furrowing into a frown as I silently counted, "Ten, nine, eight—"

I didn't even get to seven before Lucas dashed inside anxiously. "Stop it!"

He roared at me furiously, "Selina Quinton, you've gone too far! At the end of the day, Kimmy is still our classmate! How could you bear to hit her?"

Like all the times before, Lucas arrived just in time to see me hit Kimberly and immediately assumed that I was guilty without even learning the truth first.

I shook my head with a bitter smile. He was getting skilled at the act of being the knight in shining armor who had come to save the damsel in distress.

Setting down my suitcase, I took my time straightening my back before focusing my attention on Lucas first.

"Go see an optometrist if you have such bad eyesight. I hit her? As if I would dirty my hand like that!"

"You!"

My retort rendered him momentarily speechless.

Then, I turned to look at Kimberly.

"If I remember correctly, I didn't actually hear a knock on the door, nor did I get up to open the door for you." Staring intently into her eyes, I continued, "So, how did you get in here?"

Kimberly's face drained of all color as she swayed on her feet and almost fell to the floor.

However, a muscled arm was quick to dart out and wrap around her waist in support.

With solid evidence proving Kimberly guilty of defamation and provoking trouble, she was detained for 15 days, fined, and ordered to pay a hefty sum for damages. The Lanes, not wanting to be dragged down into the mud with her, were quick to announce that they had cut ties with her. Hence, not only did Kimberly now carry a substantial debt on her back, but she had even lost her last safe harbor—the protection of the Lane family. As for the Gardner family, Thomas, for the sake of self-preservation, ruthlessly booted Lucas from the seat of Gardner Corporation's CEO and disowned him.Gardner Corporation was able to weather the heavy blows I dealt it, but only barely. After struggling valiantly for a few more months, it ultimately still declared bankruptcy.Under my leadership, Quinton Corporation quickly rose to become one of the leading companies in the city, while I went on to become one of the youngest celebrated entrepreneurs in the industry.Having both fallen from grace and su

Next to Lucas, Thomas spoke up for him as well, saying, "Selina, I've already taught him a lesson on your behalf, and I've also chased away that assistant of his. He merely made a mistake that every man in the world would make. Now that he knows he was wrong, won't you forgive him this once?"Despite the stern tone of his voice, there was nothing but apathy in Thomas' eyes, and the same could be said for Lucas as well.I couldn't stop myself from scoffing coldly. It was no wonder they were father and son. To them, the worst betrayal a spouse could ever commit in a marriage was nothing but a small, insignificant matter.I could only blame myself for being too naive in the past. There was no way that a man who could go so far as to have an illegitimate child could raise that child to be any sort of outstanding man.Lifting my head to look them in the eyes, I said, "I'm not a recycling station, so don't just send all sorts of trash to me. Let me make my stance clear one last time—I, S

A layer of cold sweat drenched Lucas' body at the butler's words.Off to the side, the anger that had been simmering in everyone boiled over in that instant, and they began berating him."Lucas, we didn't want to say anything, but you leave us no choice. As if it wasn't bad enough that you were fooling around outside, you actually paraded that woman in front of your wife too?""That's right! It would've been a small matter if it had only ruined your marriage, but now, you're affecting the entire family too! That's a huge problem!""If you ask me, you should quickly meet your wife and grovel on your knees for forgiveness while the company still stands. Otherwise, you'll only drag everyone down with you.""I second that! I honestly don't understand what you see in that lousy assistant of yours! She can't hold a candle to the heiress of the Quinton family, yet somehow, she has you completely wrapped around her finger!"Lucas flushed a bright red while his fingers curled into tight f

Naturally, Gardner Corporation's current predicament was all my doing. It was only then that Lucas finally understood that I was serious about my grudge with him, and I wouldn't stop until he was thoroughly ruined. His earlier remorse vanished in the blink of an eye as he slammed a fist onto his steering wheel. "Selina Quinton! At the end of the day, we were husband and wife! How could you be so ruthless!"The atmosphere in the car grew increasingly tense, only for his phone to ring again."Luke, help me! I'm being sued, and they're forcing me to apologize to the CEO of Quinton Corporation!"The frown on Lucas' face deepened. He was furious that I wouldn't even let a delicate woman like Kimberly off the hook. But more than that, he was annoyed at himself for dragging Kimberly down into this mess with him.He struggled to calm himself as he assured Kimberly gently, "Kimmy, don't be scared. I'll head over to you immediately."However, he was only halfway to the hospital when his p

How many nights had I spent clutching my phone, crying till the morning as I watched Kimberly's blissful social media posts?"To work overtime alone is to suffer. But with two people, it becomes a sweet moment of intimacy. Shoutout to my boss for being so kind as to keep me company! Love you!""I was so scared to be all alone in a motel room in the middle of the night that I burst into tears. Thankfully, my prince charming, a.k.a my boss, came to rescue the damsel in distress! How blissful is this?""Oh no! I accidentally messed up with a client. Luckily, my boss didn't blame me and even took me out on a vacation to cheer me up. I feel like the luckiest person alive right now…"There were plenty more of such posts, each flaunting something Lucas had done for her. Notably, all these blissful moments happened either during my birthdays or our anniversaries. Eventually, they even took over nearly every single day of my married life.In an instant, Lucas couldn't keep his composure an

Lucas shot me a dark look. "Let go of her!""In your dreams!" I retorted.Since he couldn't pull me away, he could only forcefully bend my fingers backward, one by one. The sound of bones breaking cracked through the air, causing me to furrow my brows tightly at the pain. Nevertheless, I gritted my teeth and refused to relent.Lucas ignored my pain as he continued to pry my fingers away. He warned, "Selina Quinton, you'd better let go right now! Otherwise, there really is no going back between us!"I failed to stop myself from scoffing once more. Even now, he still thought that I would regret my actions and turn back.Initially, I had planned on parting ways on amicable terms for the sake of our many years together. Now, however, I would fight him to the bitter end.Behind me, Dad suddenly opened his eyes and glanced in my direction before vomiting out a mouthful of blood."Dad!" I shouted, all the blood freezing in my veins. "Lucas Gardner, you've thoroughly pissed me off! If I
