Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
Lucas carefully steadied Kimberly before explaining to me, "Kimmy is now my assistant, so it only makes sense for me to give her our door passcode. It's all to make her job easier and more convenient. Are you seriously getting upset over such a small thing? Selina Quinton, your jealousy is truly suffocating!"

He shot me a look filled with sheer disdain as he spoke.

I stood rooted to the spot in shock at his words, feeling like I had been struck by lightning.

He was actually saying that he felt suffocated because of me? Then, what did he call his tacit approval and indulgence over the past two years as Kimberly interfered in our married life? She had infiltrated every aspect of our life and had had no boundaries at all!

It started with her coming to our house to deliver him documents, then progressed to her brazenly having dinner with us, staying overnight, wearing my underclothes, and using my pads without my permission…

There were countless other small instances that turned our married life from a duo to a trio, and I was the third wheel.

Tilting my head up to force the tears back, I then turned to Lucas. "Since this marriage is such torture for us both, just sign the divorce agreement."

Lucas frowned and shoved the divorce agreement to the side. "That's enough. Stop throwing a tantrum and apologize to Kimmy now. Once you do, we can let this matter settle, and we'll still all be close classmates."

As he mentioned the word "classmates" again, all those horrible memories of my past swarmed me once more.

Unable to keep my emotions in check any longer, I screamed, "Even if I have to be alone for the rest of my life, I will never be friends with someone who once bullied me!"

He wanted me to apologize to Kimberly? That was never happening!

Back then, for the sake of mingling better with my peers, I purposely hid my family's true identity. Unexpectedly, this made me Kimberly's target for bullying.

On the very first day of school, my school bag and textbooks were tossed into a dirty pond at the back of the school. Besides, someone used a knife to slash a large hole in my school uniform.

Eventually, my family pressured the school into forcing Kimberly to publicly apologize to me. They also wanted to expel her, but Lucas talked me out of it by saying, "Selina, it's much easier to make enemies than friends. Since she already knows she was wrong, why don't you let her off the hook?"

At the time, due to my crush on Lucas, I swallowed my indignation and shook hands with Kimberly to make peace, even telling the school not to expel her.

Looking back on it now, I realized that his favoritism toward her had already started from then. I had simply been too blinded by my love to see it.

Kimberly's expression turned even uglier, even as she cried like there was no tomorrow.

"I was wrong and overstepped my boundaries. I shouldn't have hoped to become friends with you on account of us being classmates in the past. I forgot I'm just a lowly and insignificant employee at your company now, which is all my fault. I deserve this. I'll leave right away."

Lucas instantly became upset at her words and reached over to pull her behind him protectively. He yelled at me, "I didn't make you a wife of a CEO for you to throw your weight around and bully others!"

Then, turning to pat Kimberly's trembling shoulders, he reassured her, "Kimmy, don't put yourself down like that. I've never thought of you as just a regular employee."

His gaze was burning passionately as he looked at the frail woman before him. "You'll always be the most special person in my heart."

My legal husband was confessing his love to another woman right before my eyes, yet instead of going off the deep end like I had in the past, all I felt now was utter disgust.

Kimberly had graduated from an unknown college abroad. So, with those credentials, she was technically far from qualified to be the assistant of Gardner Corporation's CEO.

Yet, Lucas had ignored everyone's protests and stubbornly insisted on keeping her by his side. Not only was he paying her an abnormally high salary that was unparalleled in the industry, but he showed her such blatant favoritism that even I, his legal wife, could only come second.

With solid evidence proving Kimberly guilty of defamation and provoking trouble, she was detained for 15 days, fined, and ordered to pay a hefty sum for damages. The Lanes, not wanting to be dragged down into the mud with her, were quick to announce that they had cut ties with her. Hence, not only did Kimberly now carry a substantial debt on her back, but she had even lost her last safe harbor—the protection of the Lane family. As for the Gardner family, Thomas, for the sake of self-preservation, ruthlessly booted Lucas from the seat of Gardner Corporation's CEO and disowned him.Gardner Corporation was able to weather the heavy blows I dealt it, but only barely. After struggling valiantly for a few more months, it ultimately still declared bankruptcy.Under my leadership, Quinton Corporation quickly rose to become one of the leading companies in the city, while I went on to become one of the youngest celebrated entrepreneurs in the industry.Having both fallen from grace and su

Next to Lucas, Thomas spoke up for him as well, saying, "Selina, I've already taught him a lesson on your behalf, and I've also chased away that assistant of his. He merely made a mistake that every man in the world would make. Now that he knows he was wrong, won't you forgive him this once?"Despite the stern tone of his voice, there was nothing but apathy in Thomas' eyes, and the same could be said for Lucas as well.I couldn't stop myself from scoffing coldly. It was no wonder they were father and son. To them, the worst betrayal a spouse could ever commit in a marriage was nothing but a small, insignificant matter.I could only blame myself for being too naive in the past. There was no way that a man who could go so far as to have an illegitimate child could raise that child to be any sort of outstanding man.Lifting my head to look them in the eyes, I said, "I'm not a recycling station, so don't just send all sorts of trash to me. Let me make my stance clear one last time—I, S

A layer of cold sweat drenched Lucas' body at the butler's words.Off to the side, the anger that had been simmering in everyone boiled over in that instant, and they began berating him."Lucas, we didn't want to say anything, but you leave us no choice. As if it wasn't bad enough that you were fooling around outside, you actually paraded that woman in front of your wife too?""That's right! It would've been a small matter if it had only ruined your marriage, but now, you're affecting the entire family too! That's a huge problem!""If you ask me, you should quickly meet your wife and grovel on your knees for forgiveness while the company still stands. Otherwise, you'll only drag everyone down with you.""I second that! I honestly don't understand what you see in that lousy assistant of yours! She can't hold a candle to the heiress of the Quinton family, yet somehow, she has you completely wrapped around her finger!"Lucas flushed a bright red while his fingers curled into tight f

Naturally, Gardner Corporation's current predicament was all my doing. It was only then that Lucas finally understood that I was serious about my grudge with him, and I wouldn't stop until he was thoroughly ruined. His earlier remorse vanished in the blink of an eye as he slammed a fist onto his steering wheel. "Selina Quinton! At the end of the day, we were husband and wife! How could you be so ruthless!"The atmosphere in the car grew increasingly tense, only for his phone to ring again."Luke, help me! I'm being sued, and they're forcing me to apologize to the CEO of Quinton Corporation!"The frown on Lucas' face deepened. He was furious that I wouldn't even let a delicate woman like Kimberly off the hook. But more than that, he was annoyed at himself for dragging Kimberly down into this mess with him.He struggled to calm himself as he assured Kimberly gently, "Kimmy, don't be scared. I'll head over to you immediately."However, he was only halfway to the hospital when his p

How many nights had I spent clutching my phone, crying till the morning as I watched Kimberly's blissful social media posts?"To work overtime alone is to suffer. But with two people, it becomes a sweet moment of intimacy. Shoutout to my boss for being so kind as to keep me company! Love you!""I was so scared to be all alone in a motel room in the middle of the night that I burst into tears. Thankfully, my prince charming, a.k.a my boss, came to rescue the damsel in distress! How blissful is this?""Oh no! I accidentally messed up with a client. Luckily, my boss didn't blame me and even took me out on a vacation to cheer me up. I feel like the luckiest person alive right now…"There were plenty more of such posts, each flaunting something Lucas had done for her. Notably, all these blissful moments happened either during my birthdays or our anniversaries. Eventually, they even took over nearly every single day of my married life.In an instant, Lucas couldn't keep his composure an

Lucas shot me a dark look. "Let go of her!""In your dreams!" I retorted.Since he couldn't pull me away, he could only forcefully bend my fingers backward, one by one. The sound of bones breaking cracked through the air, causing me to furrow my brows tightly at the pain. Nevertheless, I gritted my teeth and refused to relent.Lucas ignored my pain as he continued to pry my fingers away. He warned, "Selina Quinton, you'd better let go right now! Otherwise, there really is no going back between us!"I failed to stop myself from scoffing once more. Even now, he still thought that I would regret my actions and turn back.Initially, I had planned on parting ways on amicable terms for the sake of our many years together. Now, however, I would fight him to the bitter end.Behind me, Dad suddenly opened his eyes and glanced in my direction before vomiting out a mouthful of blood."Dad!" I shouted, all the blood freezing in my veins. "Lucas Gardner, you've thoroughly pissed me off! If I
