Thorne’s POV

The Frostveil gates were a mouth.

I had never seen anything like them. Two enormous pillars of black ice, each tall as a ten-story tower, leaned together at the mountain’s foot, and between them lay a gap wide enough for a thousand wolves to run abreast. Mist poured out of it in slow, curling waves. The ground at its threshold was dead and gray, littered with old bones.

We had been camped at the border for two hours, and no one had spoken above a w

Kael’s POVI have faced assassins, warlords, shadow beasts, and the personal wrath of a god.I had never been so nervous in my life.“Hold still,” Dax muttered.“I am holding still.”“You’re fidgeting.”“I am not”“You’re fidgeting with your dagger, Kael.”I looked down. I was, in fact, spinning my favorite blade in slow, anxious circles. I stuck it into my boot, folded my arms, and glared at the training yard, which was empty except for the two of us and a heap of frozen straw dummies.Dax stood a few feet away with his hands behind his back. His left shoulder was still bandaged under his tunic. A smear of snow clung to his hair, and he looked like a man about to be sentenced.“I wanted to ask you something,” he said.“I have something to ask you.”“Let me go first.”“No, you’ll do it badly.”“I will not do it badly!”“You always do things badl

  • One Night,One Claim   Chapter 65: Forty Years

Elara’s POVThe fever came in the night, three days after the Concord.I woke to the sound of Rico’s breathing. It was wrong, shallow and fast, and when I touched his forehead my hand came away wet. He was burning. His skin, which had always run cool, felt like a hearthstone.“Rico.” I shook his shoulder. “Rico, wake up.”He opened his eyes. They were glassy, unfocused.“Elara,” he mumbled. “I’m fine. Go back to sleep.”“You are not fine.”“It’s only the ribs.”“It is not only the ribs!”I was already out of bed, flinging open the door, shouting for Liora. She arrived in a nightgown with her braid undone and her satchel bumping at her hip. She took one look at him and her face went grim.“How long?”“I don’t know. I woke up and he was like this.”Liora laid a hand on his chest, closed her eyes, and was silent for a long time. When she opened them, they

Elara’s POVSilverfang’s old hall had never been meant for peace. It was a vast, drafty cavern of a room with high stone arches and a floor of cracked marble, the kind of place designed to make visitors feel small. Banners from six packs hung from the rafters. A great horseshoe table stood in the center, and around it sat the alphas of the Western Reaches, a ring of grim faces and folded arms.I walked in with my head high and a three-year-old on my hip.“The Queen Elara Valoran,” the herald announced, “Luna of the Obsidian Crown, Bridge of Storm and Earth.”Every eye turned.Rico walked at my left, still limping, in plain black with no crown. Dax and Laura followed behind. Flame was dressed in a little green tunic with a sprig of holly tucked in her hair. She gazed around the hall with wide, interested eyes and waved at an elderly alpha, who, to everyone’s surprise, waved back.I took my seat at the head of the tab

Elara’s POVWe left the Frostveil three days later, and the mountain let us go.I had half expected it to resist. Every step down the long road south, I felt the thread between my palm and the Heart tug gently, like a hand on my sleeve. Not a leash. A reminder. Come back. I turned once at the first bend and looked up. The peaks wore a crown of pale morning, and I could have sworn they were smiling.“He’ll be fine,” Rico said beside me, reading my face. He rode a gentle chestnut mare and winced with every step, his ribs bound in tight linen. “He has your parents.”“He has a thousand years of being lonely.”“And now he has a Queen who promised to visit.” He caught my hand. “That is a very good start.”Behind us, the army was a river of banners and weary faces, wolves from six packs riding side by side as if they had never been strangers. Somewhere in the middle, Flame sat on Dax’s shoulders, tugging his ears like reins.

  • One Night,One Claim   Chapter 62: The Price of Spring

Elara’s POVThe war ended the way winters do: not with a battle cry, but with a slow, astonished thaw.By noon the shadow beasts had melted into puddles of clear water. The ash-gray wolves woke from their dream and wept in the arms of their packmates. Thorne found Rowan in the middle of the field, and when she whispered the secret she’d been holding for a week, my tough, scarred, battle-hardened brother-in-arms sat down in the mud and cried like a boy.I watched it from the foot of the Frostveil with Flame asleep against my shoulder, and I thought: this is what we fought for.I had not yet counted what it cost. My parents found me at the cavern door. They stood in the first real sunlight either of them had seen in twenty-three years, thin, pale, blinking, wrapped in the same cloaks. Aislin’s hand shook as she touched my cheek. Corwin looked at the sky as if he had forgotten it could be that blue.“We can’

Elara’s POVThe Sovereign did not take the flower. He stood there, ten feet of ancient dark, staring down at a three-year-old girl holding out a white bloom, and for a long moment I thought the whole mountain had stopped breathing. Then he flinched. It was a small thing. A tightening around the eyes. But I saw it, because I had spent the last two years learning what fear looks like on a face that is trying not to show it.“No,” he said hoarsely. “No. You do not understand. I cannot…”“Why not?” Flame asked.“Because I am hungry.” His voice cracked down the middle. The lullaby was gone. What was left sounded like wind through a graveyard. “I have been hungry for a thousand years. Do you know what that is? To want, and want, and want, and have nothing in the world that does not run away from you?”Flame blinked up at him, her small hand still outstretched.“I’d run away from you too,” she said, very
