"Damn it!" Stella escaped from two burly men who were chasing her. She ran into an alley and hid in the neighborhood's public bathroom. Quickly, she took the cell phone and called someone. "Leave the house now. Wait for me at the red light intersection near the bakery. Bring our clothes too!" Without waiting for her sister Mia's response, she immediately switched off the phone. The draining incident made her lean her head against the door while catching her breath. After feeling that it was safe, she opened the door slowly while peeking out. She stepped slowly, observing the surroundings warily. "Looks like I'm safe," she muttered, then walked quickly to meet her sister at the place she had mentioned earlier. "HEY! DON'T RUN AWAY!" She immediately looked back, saw the people who had been chasing her coming out of another alley and running towards her. "Damn it!" she shouted, then ran again as fast as she could to avoid them. After running for quite some distance, her eyes caught at the car that was stopped at the traffic light. She couldn't possibly run in the previous direction because she would only get caught, nor could she run the other way which would make her even further away from the appointment with her sister. She knocked on the windshield and said, "Help! Please help me!" The windshield opened. "What are you doing, huh?" asked a man who was driving the car. "Open the door and let me in. I need your help," she said while her eyes looking at the man who was still chasing her. "Come on..." "You're crazy, huh?" "I'm in my right mind, sir. I just need your help," she said desperately. Right at that moment, the red light turned green. The sound of car horns from behind began to blare, urging his to move. "Damn it!" The man cursed in annoyance, forced to open his car door. She got into the car and sat back. "I'm safe," she muttered. The car finally drove through the red light. "Thank you." The man didn't answer. He continued driving until the car stopped in the left lane. "Why did you stop?" she asked. "You got into my car to avoid the people who were chasing you, right? Now they're far behind and there's no way they'll catch up with you. Now get out of my car!" "Can't you take me to the intersection ahead, sir? I have to meet my sister who is waiting for me there." "No! Get out of my car!" "But, sir..." The speech was interrupted as her eyes caught sight of a man walking across the street. She knew the man, he was Damian. "Damn jerk!" she swore irritably. "What did you say? Damn jerk?" asked the man in the car, looking at her with a shocked expression. "I helped you, and you call me damn jerk? You're so ungrateful!" "Huh? It's not like that, sir. It's not you, it's that man behind." She pointing at Damian. The man turned to look in the direction she was pointing, seeing a man who was walking alone. He didn't give much attention and redirected his gaze back to her. "I don't accept excuses! Now get out of my car!" he said sarcastically, giving her an annoyed look. She started to get annoyed, after had been speaking as softly as possible. "I'm going out. Thank you for helping me. My advice is, don't be so arrogant, or you'll be far from your soulmate!" She got out of the car, closed the door roughly, then crossed the street to meet Damian. Marvin, the man whose car Stella was riding in, closed his eyes as her closed the door very rudely. "Damn!" He snorted sarcastically. Beep-beep... He reached into the pocket of his suit-covered shirt, took out his cell phone, and stared at the screen. Dariel's name was displayed. He immediately swiped the green panel on his phone screen. [I've managed to get the data of who your lover's affair was. I'll send you the man's picture now.] Not long after that, Dariel sent the picture. Immediately clicking on it, his forehead frowned. At the same moment, he turned his head to the right and saw the woman who had been in his car earlier arguing with a man. The same man as the one on his cell phone screen. He continued to pay attention to the argument. Shortly after, he witnessed the woman landing a slap on the man's cheek, followed by a knee to the man's stomach. The man groaned in pain, clutching his stomach. He smiled and grinned, then glanced back at his cell phone screen and put it to his ear. "Riel, find out who this man is, including any women he's been close to." After giving a command, he switched off the phone, then drove back to Esther Company, his family-owned business now under his control. Continued...June 21st (two months later)KipIt’s the winter solstice, exactly six months after I met Alice, and Mum and Dad’s house is full of people who’ve come to celebrate the renewal of Saxon and Catie’s vows and their baby-naming ceremony. Saxon sprung a wedding on her after Christmas while they were on holiday, because he wanted to marry her but knew she’d be overwhelmed by having to say her vows in front of lots of people. However, six months have gone by now, and she’s settled down a lot, to the extent that when he suggested they combine a naming ceremony with a vow renewal ceremony, she jumped at the idea.Dad’s twin brother, Brandon, and my aunt, Jenny, are chatting to Mum and Alice’s mum. Penny has been spending a lot of time with Mum, and I’m so pleased that they genuinely seem to get on well. Penny’s holding one of Catie’s twins and Mum’s holding the other, and the two of them are clearly enjoying themselves.Kennedy’s helping Catie get ready. Her husband, Jackson, with baby Eddie, i
He holds out a hand to me. “Let’s go outside.”Meekly, my head whirling, I let him pull me up and lead me out into the garden. It’s dark now, and a couple of moths are fluttering around the kitchen window, but there’s enough light for us to see each other clearly, and it’s not cold.Still standing, he turns me to face him. “What do you think?” he asks.“I don’t know what to say. I… I’m ashamed Mum feels that Charlie and I didn’t listen to her. She’s right of course. I was determined to make the sacrifice because I thought it was what I should do. But she is still my mother, and she deserves to have a say in it.”I look down at where he’s holding my hands. “But it’s not easy. It would be a huge change for her to move, and I know that change is one thing she really struggles with. When anything big happens, it always makes her unwell.”“That’s fair enough, but we’d make sure we did it in small steps so it didn’t become too overwhelming.” He lifts my hands and kisses my fingers. “Whateve
I glance at Charlie, a little ashamed. She looks back at me, her lips twisting.“I don’t think it occurred to either of you to ask me what I want,” Mum says. “And every time I tried to talk about it, you shut me down.”I stare at her, horrified. Is that true? I suppose it is. She did try to say she wanted to find a solution that would mean neither of us would have to give up the men in our lives, but we both steamrollered over her, insisting we weren’t going to cave.“When I talked to Kip, though,” Mum continues, “he said, ‘What do you want?’ I was so touched I nearly cried.”I glance at him, but he’s looking at her, his lips curving up behind his fingers.Mum looks at me. “As I said, I appreciate everything you’ve done for me. But I’m not going to let either of you pass up on the chance of happiness with the man of your dreams for me. Alice!” She snaps as I open my mouth. “Please!”I close my mouth again, shocked at her sharp tone.“I know that over the years you’ve had to step up an
AliceI’m absolutely shattered.Charlie’s revelation yesterday threw all three of us into a whirlwind of heightened emotions, and it’s been very difficult to stop them spinning us around.Mum went to bed early last night, exhausted from the whole thing, and the two of us stayed up until very late, checking on her from time to time, both frightened of leaving her alone.“We have to sort this,” Charlie told me at one point, long after the sun had set. “We can’t keep doing this to her.”“I know that,” I snapped. But I couldn’t see a way clear through the thick forest of our problems. In the end, both of us were so tired and irritable and upset that we decided to sleep on it and talk again the next day.I lay awake for about an hour, thinking about Kip, missing him, and feeling miserable, and fighting with myself because he’s my best friend, and I wanted to call him and talk it over with him, and I couldn’t. Eventually I crashed out, slept too long, and I’ve woken with a headache, grouchy
Alice“Red or white?” Saxon asks. It’s Sunday evening, and we’re at Saxon and Catie’s house, about to have dinner. She’s baked some focaccia, and we’re currently dipping chunks of it in olive oil, salt, and dukkah.I look at where he and Catie are sitting opposite me and Kip at their dining table, noti
Kip“I missed you,” I tell Alice as I lower her down.“I missed you, too.” She smiles, looking up at me with that expression on her face that makes my heart race, as if I’m a movie star, and she’s been waiting in line for my autograph for hours. She looks amazing, in a white dress that emphasizes her
At the same time, he rests a hand on my knee and pulls it so my legs part, and then he moves his hand up to cup my mound. He slides his fingers down into my folds, and I sigh.He lifts his head and looks at me again while he teases my clit. “Ready for me, Alice?”I nod, suddenly breathless. He strokes
