LOGINAdeline’s POV
One year Later,
“Happy birthday, baby”
I placed a single candle into the small cupcake sitting on the table and smiled at Oliver. My son clapped his tiny hands together, laughing as the flame flickered.
I wished I could freeze this moment forever.Just me and him with no worries, no bills and no fear. But reality waited on the other side of the apartment door.
Three overdue rent notices sat on the counter. The electricity bill was due tomorrow and my refrigerator contained half a carton of milk, some eggs, and nothing else.
The money Damien had thrown at me a year ago had helped me escape the motel and rent this tiny apartment, but it hadn’t lasted forever.
For twelve months, I'd worked every job I could find. Waitressing, cleaning offices, babysitting. Name it all.
But still, it was never enough. I looked at Oliver and felt my chest tighten. I had promised him I would figure it out. Instead, I was failing.
A knock sounded at the door but I already knew who it was. My landlord.
“Ms. Monroe,” he said when I opened it. “You have until Friday.”
“Please, give me one more week.”
“I’ve already given you three.”
When he left, I closed the door and slid to the floor. Oliver crawled over immediately and climbed into my lap. My sweet boy, my entire world.
And suddenly, I remembered Damien’s words. “Bring the baby back in one year.”
I had spent twelve months convincing myself I would never do it. Now I wasn’t so sure.
I barely slept that night. The next morning, I packed Oliver’s diaper bag with shaking hands.
Every instinct inside me screamed not to go. But what kind of mother was I if I couldn’t even give my child a stable home?
By 8:45 a.m, I was already standing outside the King’s Bar and Hotel.
Oliver rested against my chest and my heart felt like it was breaking apart. “You deserve better than me.” I whispered.
I looked at the bar and tears almost came out of my eyes when I remembered I actually gave birth in here. Oliver’s little hand touched my face, and I smiled as I looked at him.
Even at such such a young age, it's so clear who his father is. He's Damien’s copy.
He smiled cutely, his one teeth looking funny in his gum. I kissed his cheeks, and he chuckled cutely, raising his hands in the air innocently as I entered the bar.
Just like like year, Damien is sitting on that same seat, but right now he's looking richer and more handsome, wearing expensive brands, but his cold face is still same.
The bartenders were smiling at me from the stand, and I smiled sadky before walking to Damien.
I knocked his table before he looked up, and for the first time I'd known him, Damien looked stunned when he saw little Oliver obviously be of the uncanny resemblance.
He stood up slowly, still staring at the baby.
“Here” I said, giving Oliver to him reluctantly.
Damien took him slowly, and the boy smiled at him too. “I think it's over now.” I said breaking the silence.
Damien didn't say a word to me. He called in a gy who looked like his personal assistant whom he made a gesture to. The guy packed the laptop and files on the table, then they left the bar together.
Oliver started crying, and my tears flowed as I watch Damien take him away. I squatted on my spot, and the bartenders joined me. “It's okay” they started patting me.
It might take years before I see Oliver again, or I might never even see him again. I stood when the realization hit me, and I rushed out of the bar.
Damien was about to enter the car when I pulled him back. “Please, let me spend one more hour with Oliver before you take him.” I pleaded.
“I have work to do.” he replies blankly.
“Please, okay how about 30 minutes, I miss him already. Please let me just…”
“I said I have things to do. Apparently, I'm not jobless like you” he cut me off with a glare and my arms fell from him.
“You are heartless” I mutter hurtfully as tears rolled out of my eyes.
“Your gender taught me to be” he replied coldly and entered the car, driving away from me.
“Oliverrrrrrrr” I cried out, sitting on the floor.
The bartenders rushed out again, and when they saw me, they exchanged glances.
“I feel so sorry for her” one of the bartenders said sadly as they stared at me pitifully.
“Oliver, mommy is sorry. I muttered in tears, shaking with cold.” I stood up and started walking.
I stood alone on the sidewalk, my arms empty.
And for the first time in my life, I understood what it felt like to lose everything.
EIGHT YEARS LATER
Eight years have passed since the day I handed my son over.
Life moved on. At least that’s what everyone believed. I have a job now, a small apartment, some friends, and a life.
But on May 10 of every year, I bought a cupcake and lit a candle. I made sure I wished my son a happy birthday from a distance.
"Table six is taking too much time to be served” Madam Brooke screamed from the kitchen taking me out of my thoughts.
“It’s almost ready!” I replied from the kitchen.
Two minutes later, I came out of the kitchen with the tray of food for that particular table, smiling as I walked there to serve. My hair is in a bun, and the blue apron looks like it was made for me. I caught my reflection in the stainless steel counter, same clear skin, same familiar face. Eight years had passed, but time hadn’t settled on me.
“You forgot to add wine,” the woman on the table said.
“I’m so sorry ma’am, will be right back” I apologized and rushed back to the cellar to get it.
It hasn’t been easy even after becoming a graduate, I still wasn’t able to get myself a good job that pays since then, so I had to settle for what I found here.
Tasty restaurant is one of the best around, and they get patronized well, so Madam Brooke pays all the servers well.
I got the wine and took it back to the table, then I returned to the kitchen but Madam Brooke blocked me. “You should rest now. Rest for five minutes before joining the others” she said and I smiled.
I laughed softly. “Yes, ma’am.”
My phone buzzed in my apron pocket. The smile on my face disappeared the moment I saw the caller ID.
Ethan. My husband.
I stared at the screen for several seconds before answering.
“What?” I asked quietly.
“Where are you?” His cold voice came through immediately.
“Work.” I replied.
“You’re late.”
“My shift doesn’t end for another hour.”
“I don’t care. Get home.” The line went dead after he said that.
I slowly lowered the phone. Eight years ago, I thought losing Oliver was the worst thing that could ever happen to me.
I was wrong. Because eight years later, I was still surviving, still enduring and still trapped.
And tonight, I had to go home to the man I regretted marrying.
Damien’s POVI hated orientation days. They were repetitive, unnecessary, and usually a complete waste of my time. The company had competent managers for a reason. If I attended every orientation personally, I wouldn’t have time to run a billion-dollar corporation.Yet there I was, walking towards the orientation hall with Theo beside me.The moment the doors opened, the employees erupted.“Boss!”“Boss!”“Boss!”I acknowledged them with a brief nod, and my eyes met hers. Adeline. She was seated among the new employees, dressed in the company orientation uniform. The moment my eyes landed on her, I forgot every word of the speech I was supposed to give. The company's orientation uniform was simple. It was just a blue shirt and a white skirt. Nothing special. Unfortunately, Adeline somehow made it look unfairly good. The blue shirt brought out her eyes and fit her perfectly without trying too hard and the white skirt stopped just above her knees, giving her a youthful appearance that
Adeline’s POVThe restaurant is unusually busy today with different customers, obviously it’s Friday, and a lot of families eat out.Despite getting a job now, I still came back to the restaurant to work part-time after leaving the company. The money is the most important, especially now that I have a child to care for.I haven’t had the time to even go pick Maya from school, but I called Steve to help me with that already.“You should rest a bit again, Adeline” Madam Brooke said, and I smiled as I wiped my sweat.“No ma’am. The others will probably hate me if I keep resting in between. “And that’s because you work harder than anyone here. You served close to twenty tables in the space of 10 minutes.” Madam Brown said and she smiled again.“I’m seriously fine and I’m not tired.”A new customer rang the order bell, and I rushed there to take it.I got there and met two right-looking men with full beards, obviously businessmen talking about business. So I had to wait for their talks to
Adeline’s POVI came out of a locker room dressed in a blue shirt which has Hartley Corporation written in front of it in white, then a short white flared skirt and sneakers, all provided by the company. It’s the rule for new staff to dress this way at every orientation.I bumped into a man immediately I came out, and he held me by the waist to prevent me from falling.“Mr. Kay” I muttered, and he smiled. He’s the head of staff. He kept holding my waist while staring at me, so I quickly released myself. “You look good in the orientation outfit” he said, exploring me with his eyes.“Thanks, I have to go now” I replied and rushed out of the hallway. I entered the orientation hall and blinked when I saw the new staff member already seated. The old staff is in too, though they are standing, making it a full hall of staff.I gave Alex and Stefan a light smile before walking to a chair to sit. Julia winked at me, telling me I’m beautiful in the outfit and I smiled again.Julia loves to c
Damien’s POVThe crashing of her phone brought me out of the shock I was in.I lifted my eyes from her legs to her face. “Theo, excuse us” I finally said, and Theo glanced between us curiously before leaving the office and shutting the door behind him. For a moment, neither of us spoke. Eight years, yet I recognized her immediately. The same woman I had searched for until I eventually convinced myself she was gone forever. She looked different now. She looked more mature and stronger. But there was still something fragile hidden beneath her calm expression.Something that reminded me of the young woman I met years ago. Then she spoke. “How’s my Oliver doing?”My chest tightened. Not even a hello or why or where have you been? The first thing she asked about was Oliver.I kept staring at her, so she sniffled and asked again.“My Oliver…how is he?”She looked like she was holding herself together by a thread as tears shimmered in her eyes but refused to fall.A thousand answers crossed
Adeline’s POV The phone landed on the ground and crashed beside my black flat shoes. The crash brought the two of us out of the shock we were in and my eyes blinked gently. Damien lifted his eyes from my legs up to my face. “Excuse us, Theo” he finally said, and Theo exited the office. His right hand went back into his pocket as he walked to me. I kept looking into his eyes, and immediately he stopped in front of me. I asked the question I’ve been meaning to ask for eight years. “How’s my Oliver doing?” I was holding back my tears as I said those words, but I’m not sure maybe it’s because of the emotion I’m feeling after seeing the man who called me cheap, or maybe the tears of joy that I’d be seeing my son soon. Damien kept staring at me, so I sniffled and asked the question again. “My Oliver…how is…” “He grew up well, a lot” he replied and I smiled sadly, finally releasing my tears. “He won’t even recognize me anymore. It has been eight whole years and he w
Damien’s POVIt’s been eight years.Eight years since I’ve made the best and worst decision of my life.My mansion might not be the biggest in New York, but it’s surely one of the biggest, owned by Damien Hartley, the rich real estate dealer. All the crazy things that happened to me years ago made me even stronger and my determination to be rich was fuelled. I worked hard over the years and became the CEO of my own company, Hartley Corporation. It’s the biggest real estate company in the city, and the most reliable too. I make millions every month but I’m still yet to achieve my dream. My real dream isn’t to be one of the richest but to be the richest, but I’m still chasing after that. I have no woman in my life and I’m not planning to welcome one.I was woken up by the bright light from a camera this morning, and my opened slowly, only to see 9 years old Oliver sitting on my stomach, snapping my sleepy face pictures.“Hey big man” I said.“Dad please don’t stand up yet, just continue
Adeline’s POVThe school bus came for Maya some minutes ago, and Ethan left the house already too, so I had all the time in the world to dress up for the interview.Immediately I finished dressing up, I got my pretty flat shoes from my small shoe rack. Yes, I’m still obsessed with flat shoes. I put
Adeline’s POVI had to beg Steven to help me pick Maya in school due to fact that I was working overtime today. “Mummy” a tiny voice called and I smiled when I saw little Maya waiting with another kid in front of the restaurant.“Baby” I walked and carried her off the ground, hugging her afterward.
Adeline’s POVIt’s been one month since the worst night of my life… and the biggest mistake I ever made.I woke up at 4:30 a.m. in the tiny motel room I’d been living in for the past one month. The place wasn’t much…a narrow bed, a leaking faucet, and walls so thin I could hear my neighbors arguin
Adeline’s POVI devoted six years of my life to the only man I had ever loved, my ex-boyfriend, Chris Blackwood. The diamond ring sparkled under the auditorium lights as Chris dropped to one knee in front of over five hundred people. My heart stopped after six years together, he was finally proposin
