LUCAS’ POV.

My eyelids fluttered open slowly, and my eyes hit the white, unfamiliar ceiling. Everywhere was cold, and I looked to my side for evidence that a steamy night had really happened between me and a total stranger.

The bed was empty. I was the only one in it, but I couldn’t fool myself into thinking that nothing had happened the previous night. Her scent still lingered on the sheets, and the lotion she had used on her hair seemed to be stuck directly in my nose. I sat up in my bed and thought hard, running my hands through my hair.

Why had I suddenly done such a horrible thing? The night had been fast, and everything was so rushed that I had been caught up in it. At first, I had tried to resist, but she was so alluring, and I couldn’t take my eyes off her.

She had just triggered me in ways I had never been triggered before.

Maybe I needed to admit it, but the moment she walked into the bar, I was taken by her beauty. Her beauty was simple yet enchanting. Till she took her seat at the bar counter, I stared at her and had to force myself to stop staring.

I didn’t naturally care for women because they were all the same. All they wanted was money, popularity, and the upper hand over their peers. They all didn’t care to do whatever it took to get a rich man. Due to that, I never gave them more than a glance.

But things just felt strange with her. I was attracted but didn’t want to admit it.

Then, just when I managed to focus on my work, I heard her fighting with the bartender. I tried my best not to react, but in the end I did, and due to the fact that I had been taken aback by her beauty earlier, it was very easy for her to seduce me.

I got up from the bed, put on my clothes, and went to the restroom. She wasn’t there. Did she leave?

I took my bath and ordered breakfast and new clothes to wear. Then I went down the stairs to the counter.

There were only a few people eating there, and I didn’t see the bartender I had seen the previous night. Instead, it was a woman.

“I’m from room 5. The…” I was saying, but the woman at the counter smiled, interrupting me.

“Ah, you’re the man from room 5. The lady came down early this morning and paid for everything.”

“Paid for everything?” I asked, wondering why she would do such a thing.

“Yes, she paid for everything before leaving.” The woman replied, and I sighed.

“She didn’t drop a contact, her address, or something?” I asked, but she shook her head. “How much is the room?” I asked again.

“She already…”

“She paid for her stay in the room. I’ll pay for mine.” I said, sliding my credit card towards her, and she looked shocked.

“But…”

“I’m paying for my stay. That’s it. Any other bills to settle?” I asked, and she bit her lips briefly.

“There are no bills to settle.” She replied. I could see she was going to take the money, but I didn’t care. I wasn’t about to let a random woman pay for my stay and make me look like the irresponsible one.

I stayed in the room for a while, thinking hard. Why would I make love to a complete stranger? Everything about the night played in my head clearly. I had never felt anything like it.

She was simply perfect. My fingers could remember the feel of her soft skin and the soft strands of her hair. While making love to me, she had smiled and seemed cheerful. Of course, she had been heartbroken. That was what I could tell from her actions and behaviors. She didn’t seem like a loose woman, and she had a ring on her finger.

I tried to tell myself it wasn’t my fault and that she seduced me, but a little harsh voice said the fault was all mine.

She was drunk and didn’t mean what she did. Not just drunk, but drugged. I was sane and could tell right from wrong. I could have resisted and locked her in her room until the drug wore off on her body and she was no longer drunk, but I didn’t.

I had let myself get swayed and had listened to the voice of my desires. Maybe it was because it had been long since I last had a woman, or because I had been taken aback by her beauty, or because she had been innocently alluring—I had no idea.

After a while, I decided to leave and continue my journey. I had driven for hours the previous day, after my flight into the country, and it had been so hard to find a hotel. The area seemed remote, but luckily I had found the inn where I was able to sit and finish up a few things. Unfortunately, before I had booked a room, I had met the strange lady, and we ended up sharing a room.

I left the inn and got into my car, preparing for the journey home. According to my GPS, the drive was going to be a little over two hours.

Already, the sun was high in the sky, and it made me scared to face the traffic that might occur.

Traffic when the sun was high meant unbearable heat, and it felt like the heat would kill me.

I began to drive, and the road seemed free. I had yet to encounter any traffic.

“Let’s just forget.” I said to myself, trying to forget the strange woman. It was a one-night stand, and like all one-night stands, it was meant to be forgotten.

Unfortunately, as I drove, I continued to see her face in my mind and realized forgetting was going to be a challenge.

I was unable to take my mind off of her.

You can’t concentrate?” My temporary partner asked, when she saw me rubbing my forehead continuously. “Or you have an headache?” She asked, placing a hand over my forehead.“No. It’s fine.” I replied, with a smile, and she withdrew her hand. I went back to sorting out documents, and tried to concentrate. What on earth did John mean by a three-day trip? Just the two of us?My God, that will be uncomfortable, and hellish. What would we do when we were alone? Listening to him talk alone was suffocating.“This won’t do.” I muttered, getting to my feet. I hurried over to the restroom, and pulled out my phone, after ensuring no one was in there.“Dahlia?” I called, when she picked the call.“Emily. I’ve been meaning to call after the pictures of you and Lucas blew over the internet. I have just been really busy.” She said, and I gave a little smile. Calling her didn’t feel enough anymore. I missed seeing her.“I really want to see you. Talking to you puts me

101LUCAS’ POV.“This tastes good.” Derel said, savoring his latte.“Don’t try to change the topic, Derel. I brought you here to this fancy café, so you can feel comfortable and talk to me.” I said, spooning cake into my mouth.“Well, it’s not much. We just dated briefly.”“When was that?” I asked, leaning backwards.“Maybe a year ago?”“So? How did you meet her?”“She was in her senior year back then, about to graduate. So we dated briefly.”“Anything sketchy about her?”“Sketchy?”“Does she take drugs, do things that students shouldn’t?”“No.”“Then, what’s the red flag about her?”“Why are you so interested in her?”“Because I get a bad feeling whenever I see my influencers, but I can’t pick out who is giving off the evil vibe.”“Well, she was possessive, toxic, and sometimes, she tried to hit me. I don’t know if she was a druggie, but she drank and smoked a lot.” He said, and I raised a brow.“Did your sense of reason not have a role to play in you not dating such a girl?”“Well,

100JOHN’S POV.The sun shone into my room, lighting the whole place, and I turned on my bed, giving a loud yawn. Ever since the plan sweet Darcy had given me, I had been a little optimistic, and giddy towards the outcome.A knock.“Come in.” I said, and Katie walked in.“I’m here.” She said. I had called for her early in the morning, but didn’t know she’d come quickly.“What time did I call you?”“Around seven-thirty.”“Oh, it’s some minutes after eight.” I said, looking at the clock. “Well, let’s leave that aside. I want you to search for beach houses near Olive High School. The prices, and how much it would cost for like three days.” I said, leaning against the headboard.“Right now?” She asked, and I nodded.“Take your seat. I want the report now.”She looked around briefly, before settling into a sofa, and began to tap away at her phone. I watched her.She had changed a lot. Was it wanting to be more for Lucas that changed her, or the arrival of competition? She never opposed me

99EMILY’S POV.I stared at her, speechlessly, watching how she tried to regulate herself, and keep her anger in check.Six years? She loved him for six years?“I shouldn’t ruin your love of six years? How come your six-year love only amounts to this? How come nothing came out of it? Do you think all the women in the world will wait twenty years for you to keep chasing him? Whether or not I like Lucas, it’s none of your concern because he’s not yours, so you have no right to scream at me like this. I never stopped you from talking to him, did I?”“John is enough for you.”“I don’t need John.”“You don’t even know if you like Lucas or not, so butt out. I know clearly that I like him. If you’re not planning on being real, or clear with your feelings, and where you stand, then simply butt out. Dress up in something warm. We’re going to the company.” She said harshly, and turned back the way she came, slamming the door. There was enough cold inside, why did they want me going out? In a fe

98JOHN’S POV.(The previous evening)I poured myself fruit wine after finishing my work for the day. It had been so long since I finished my daily work. Most of the time, I carried over work to the next day, so the wine was more of a celebration thing.“Didn’t know wine still tastes good in an office setting.” I murmured to myself, and looked out the window. “It’s snowing.”‘It’s snowing, John! Aliens!’ I heard Emily scream in my head. Her giggles followed. ‘I know they’re not aliens. What do I say? Childhood stories stick!’That was our first Christmas together. The snow had come really late, making everyone wonder if it was ever going to snow that Christmas. Alas, it had.“We didn’t imagine a Christmas without her, John.” I said, swirling my drink in my glass.Just then, my door was pushed open.“Gosh.” I exclaimed, softly, as I was caught off guard.Katie stormed in, and stood in front of me.“Sweet to drink wine alone on a snowy night when your woman is out there having coffee, a

97LUCAS’ POV.(The previous evening)I watched Derel and Tenor, trying to understand the situation. Where did they meet? Why were they so casual with each other? She didn’t look like an high school student, so I couldn’t imagine where they could have met long enough to have such relationship with each other.“Don’t touch me.” Derel said, jerking his arm out of her hand. She took off her jacket completely, and hit him with it.“What is the matter with you? Must you be so headstrong?” She asked, heatedly.“I believe you have no business judging whether I’m headstrong or not.” Derel said. “We don’t know each other, do we?” He asked coldly, and walked away, but she followed him. I wanted to go with them, but my phone rang.It was Emily. I picked it, and we talked a little after I suggested having coffee, which was weird, judging that the sky had darkened, but she didn’t mind.I doubted I was the only one offering to drink coffee at night.I left Derel, since I was sure he was perfectly c

96EMILY’S POV.“I… don’t know.” I said and she raised a brow. I couldn’t recall if I ever asked myself that question, but at the moment, I was. Did I like Lucas as more than a friend? Or did I just feel too free around him?One thing I knew was that I liked him than I ever liked all my friends, and at the moment, I liked him more than I liked John.“I don’t know if I like him that way, but if I do, and do not know about it yet, then I’ll try my best to stop it. I know it’s not right.” I said, fiddling with my fingers, hoping that saving her life accidentally would be enough to make her take my side.“You know, it was a big shame when you broke off the engagement with John. I thought of all the marriages we declined, and all the people who knew about it, but it was even a bigger shame seeing John’s unfaithful and disgusting chat exposed in such a manner. John does not worth you. Any man who stoops so low to cheat, does not deserve his woman, not if she’s cheating too.“But, as of this

95LUCAS’ POV.I wondered what Lady Genevieve had to say to Emily, but it couldn’t have been anything bad. After all, she had been the one to discover her, and call for help.Raymond had insisted it wasn’t thanks to her, but instead, it was thanks to him who had told Emily to find her. Had it been someone like Mandy, she could have left Lady Genevieve there. Emily had a choice to open the door after knocking, and she also had a choice to leave, and search elsewhere.“Did you come with Emily?” John asked me, as I made to leave.“Why do you ask?” I asked, and he gave a scoff.“Mere curiosity.”“No.”“You didn’t come with her?” He asked. He continued, “Why do you always stay close to her? I mean, you guys are always together most of the time. What’s going on between you both?” He asked me.“I thought we were over this.” I said, pressing the button of the elevator.“No, we aren’t. Emily is my—We’re not married at the moment, or dating, but I believe she will come back to me. But if she ke

94EMILY’S POV.I dashed to her immediately I saw her sprawled in that unnatural angle. Her eyeglasses seemed to have broken, and I wondered how hard she fell.“Lady Genevieve, Lady Genevieve!” I called to check for any signs of consciousness. It seemed she had passed out completely. I placed my head on her chest gently to see if her heart was still beating. It was.I got up, and ran out the door.“Help! Lady Genevieve fainted!” I called out, and the maids stationed around her room, ran to me. Together, we all lifted her. It turned out she had a lot of weight, and we struggled to lift her out.We decided to go through the back exit, as it was closer to us.More maids who saw us, joined us in lifting her, and we managed to get to the driver, who immediately jumped into the driver’s seat, and began to drive us.As for the family, they would be informed once we were sure she was fine. There was no time to waste. At the nearest hospital, we took her out of the car, and the ER doctors assi
