CHAPTER 15CRYSTAL I think I didn't hear him well, “Where and who is holding a housewarming party?” I asked, praying that I might have heard wrong.“You are hosting us to come celebrate with you in your new apartment,” Drake said, flashing his sultry smile. My brows furrowed, “Is that necessary?” I asked, trying to dissuade them but their response won't change.Everything in me wanted to scream no but how could I say that to both of them without sounding rude.Drake chuckled, “Sounds like we have a plan. Can't wait to see where you live.”Really? I knew I had messed up. My mind was in a jumbled mess as I was thinking about it. The contract was signed and excused myself from the office and went down to my studio. I pulled out my phone and dialed Ella's number. She picked on the second ring. “Hey babe, how is the work going?” She asked. I can imagine her smiling now.“ Bad…I'm good,” I said, nervously.“Breath in and out and tell me. What's wrong?” Ella's calm voice boomed from the ot
CRYSTAL A loud yelp escaped my lips, “What the hell!” I said, almost losing my balance on the chair. His hands grabbed me when it seemed I was almost falling off the chair. “Hey, sorry I scared you,” he said in the most sultry I have ever heard. I'm I overthinking this or something? Or is it just in my head? The way he looked at me with a lingering gaze — one that started with my eyes, down to my lips then back to my eyes, dipped slightly, then returned with a subtle, knowing curve at the corner of his mouth. It wasn't rushed but a little obvious and there was heat in it. A teasing smirk. Like he was saying more with his eyes than words.I felt my heart racing.“I didn't believe you were here until I had to see if it was true,” he said, squatting to match my level, took my hands into his and pressed his lips on my skin.My skin tingled as his lips came in contact with my hand. It took all the will in me not to snap at him– if he was truly the stalker,I needed enough evidence.“It's nic
CRYSTAL My fear is not the work. I feared what came with being seen. With being in the spotlight. This fear has made me lose trust in something like this. All I want is to do art low-key without platforms that would turn against me over a lie– like they had done last time over something I hadn't done. What if it happened again? What if one mistake, misunderstood comment,or a painting taken the wrong way made them come for me all over again?I felt chill accompanied with fear. The idea of working with RawHaus, Jaden Zenor’s Company, felt like standing at the edge of the cliff, knowing how easy it was to fall. That's when Ella's words echoed in my mind:“You don't have to be like them to belong. Maybe you are here to help change, shift things instead,”What if being seen wasn't a risk but a way I can gain grounds? I let out a slow breath. Maybe I should let go of my fears and be brave instead. And maybe, for the first time,I can be seen– on my own terms.Maybe … she was right. I had let
CRYSTAL My legs glued to the spot,as I strained my ears to listen to their conversation. I know it's not okay to eavesdrop on people's conversation but this has to do with me.I lingered behind the pillar,I strained my ear as I could barely hear their voices– low, tense. I inched closer. Then my phone vibrated, attracting my attention.Unknown number. My heart dropped,I stared at the screen frozen. Could it be the Stalker? Surprisingly,he hasn't reached out to me through messages and gifts like he used to. I was glad the person finally got tired and faced life at the same time,I wished he can keep sending messages and gifts. Crazy, right?I felt my chest tightened. I left where I was standing and came out to the open space to breathe well. I walked out of the courthouse needing some air.My phone didn't stop buzzing so I seized courage to answer the call, taking a deep breath.A pause. Then a calm, fast voice : “Good day, need a quick cash?Get up to $50,000 instantly with no collater
CRYSTAL POV I didn't do anything to deserve this treatment. I'd always thought my art was an escape route to love but this shows that it isn't—the love and praise people gave towards my art was conditional.I was waiting for the impact of the things thrown in my direction but I didn't feel anything hit me. I looked up to the tall person who was shielding me.“It's okay. Just ignore them,” he said, looking into my eyes,I bowed my head quickly, letting my hairs fall forward to mask the tears welling in my eyes. Somehow,I suddenly felt like running away from the crowd and going home to cry myself to bed and lock up like I always did.We finally entered the courthouse and sat at the reception. Tears clouded my eyes, not making me see the person who saved me from the mob earlier clearly. I dabbed my teary eyes with the handkerchief given to me and clearly saw that my saviour was the CEO of RawHaus Art company, Jaden Zenor. My eyes widened immediately, “Mr Zenor, what are you doing here?”
CRYSTAL I relaxed back into the chair and watched as the scene played out. Jack glanced at me and back at the blonde lady wearing a red shiny lipstick. He was looking as if caught in an abominable act.“What are you doing here,Chloe?” Jack asked, his arms folded across his chest, making his muscular forearm very much visible.“I came here for business,”she said. “Is this your new girlfriend?” She said with a forced smile and slightly tensed tone.“Crystal, meet Chloe.” Jack introduced me. I nodded curtly, muttering “Hi” but what I got in return was a raised eyebrow.“Chloe, this is —” “Keep that to yourself,” Chloe interjected rudely. She clicked her tongue spitefully. “It's not even upto a month we broke up, you'd quickly moved on,you Jerk,” she vexed.“Let's not do this here,Chloe,” Jack said, his voice low as he realizes that they were already attracting attention from people.I continued to watch in silence as Jack pleaded with me that he would be right back and grabbed her by the
