Chapter 4

Penulis: Triple Threat
"Loulou, come on!" Matthew called out to Louise.

She snapped back to reality, then looked at me with a complicated expression. In the end, she said nothing.

"Coming!"

The villa front door slammed shut. Only then did I finally come back to my senses.

Dazed, I pulled out my phone and called Chelsea. "Save the wait. I'm leaving tonight."

Perhaps she heard how hoarse my voice was. She stayed silent for only a few seconds and readily agreed. "Sure. Pack your things. I'll arrange for someone to pick you up."

After hanging up, I began packing every piece of clothing I could take. Anything I couldn't take went into trash bags to be thrown away the next day.

I also gathered all the toys and books I had bought Max over the years. They went into the trash bags as well.

As I reached the bottom of the closet, my hand brushed against a metal box. Inside were all the keepsakes I had collected over my eight years of marriage to Louise.

There was her first pregnancy checkup report, Max's tiny footprints from when he was a newborn, the first watch Louise bought me, and an old, yellowing photograph.

In it, I was holding our newborn against my chest, leaning against Louise's shoulder with a huge smile.

She was in the hospital bed, her expression as cool and distant as ever, but a faint smile that she didn't even realize sat on her lips.

She had been in labor all night, and I had stayed by her side, holding her hand through everything.

Back then, I truly believed that after weathering the storm, I had found my happy ending—that a fulfilling life and family awaited me. Alas, in hindsight, my naivety had blinded me.

I emptied the metal box. I tore up the pregnancy report, cut the photograph in half, and only kept the part that belonged to me. I tossed the half with Louise and Max into the trash bag.

Just then, my phone buzzed a few times. Elaine had added Matthew to the family group chat.

"From now on, Matthew is family. He's soft-hearted, Harlan, so don't give him a hard time."

Louise followed with a few messages of her own.

"Let's put what happened tonight behind us."

"I bought four tickets to Wyamy. Mom, Max, Matthew, and I are going away for a few days."

"Take care of the house while we're gone, Harlan. I'll bring you a gift when we get back."

Max celebrated in a voice message. "Hooray! Dad won't be coming! You're the best, Mom!"

Matthew sent a laughing emoji. The group chat was filled with laughter and cheerful messages.

I stared at the screen for a long time, then typed, "Max, are you sure you don't want me as your dad anymore?"

The chat went silent for a few seconds.

Elaine sent a voice message. "Harlan, have you lost your mind? How dare you scare your son like that! I was right about you—you really are an embarrassment!"

Louise wrote, "You've gone too far, Harlan. Don't take it out on our son."

Matthew immediately sent a voice message, his tone meek. "Max is still young, Harlan. If you're upset, take it out on me. Don't put him on the spot like that…"

I stared at that voice message, my finger hovering over the screen. For a long time, I couldn't bring myself to respond.

Then Max sent a video. In it, he was clinging to Matthew's arm, glaring and pouting at the camera. "That's right! I don't want you! I want Mr. Parker to be my dad instead!"

His voice was sharp as a knife, slicing through the last bit of attachment I had left for him.

After watching the video, I replied, "Got it," and exited the family group chat.

Then I called Chelsea. "I'm ready to leave now."

"The marriage has been legally dissolved. The division of marital property has been carried out according to our terms. The other party did not appeal."I stared at those few lines, yet I didn't feel the overwhelming joy I had imagined. Instead, relief sneaked in, as though something heavy had finally been laid to rest. Finally, my eight years of marriage were over.Louise messaged me, "Harlan, I wish you all the best in the future."After a long while, another message came through. "I'm sorry."I stared at it for two seconds, then blocked her number without replying. After that, Max began writing me letters regularly. At first, they were all apologies. His handwriting was crooked and uneven."Dad, I packed my schoolbag all by myself today.""Dad, I don't throw tantrums anymore.""Dad, Grandma also stopped yelling at people.""Dad, Mom learned how to make scrambled eggs, but they taste awful."I read every one of his letters, but I only replied when necessary."Study hard.

"I shouldn't have called you old and ugly," Max cried out. "I shouldn't have said I didn't want you. I shouldn't have made you take the photo for us. I won't do it again, I swear."His voice grew quieter. "Will you come home? I want to eat the cake you make."That darned cake again.I recalled that night. I had spent the entire day preparing it. I had burned my hand on the oven badly enough to blister, yet they had laughed as they kicked me out of the game and made me take their family photo.I crouched down until I was at Max's eye level. "Max, do you know why I was upset?"He nodded through his sobs. "Because I wasn't good."I shook my head. "Not just that, but because you took my love for granted. You believed that no matter how much you hurt me, I would still come home and make you another cake."Max froze. I reached out and gently touched his head. It was the first time I had touched him since I left. He immediately grabbed my hand like it was a lifeline. I slowly pulled it

"I didn't mean it," Matthew muttered shakily. "I've just had too much to drink."Just then, a woman rushed over and grabbed Matthew by the wrist. "Bold of you to be strutting around here, Matthew Parker. When are you going to pay back the 450 thousand dollars you owe me?"Another woman sneered. "That's how he was abroad, too. He lied to women, swindled money, and stole business opportunities. He basically latches onto anyone he thinks could be useful."The ballroom erupted. Some people pulled out their phones to record. Others whispered among themselves. Louise's face was ashen."Shut up! All of you, shut up!" Matthew barked, completely losing it. He turned toward me, his eyes filled with hatred. "It's you! This is all your fault! You did this to me, Harlan!"I looked at him calmly. "I don't have the time or any interest in ruining you, Matthew. I walked out of your little game a long time ago."The police arrived soon after.Matthew was arrested on suspicion of fraud, copyright

My outfit was simple but sharp, without any flashy accessories. The moment I stepped into the ballroom, I still drew plenty of attention. Some people recognized me and began whispering."Isn't that Mr. Schofield?""I heard he's going through a divorce.""How did he become so different? His whole demeanor has changed."I walked in without flinching.Louise was standing near the stage. When she saw me, she visibly froze. Her gaze lingered on me, as if she wanted to come over but ultimately hesitated.Elaine was also present. She appeared more haggard than she had during our last video call. When she saw me, her eyes reddened.Max stood beside her in a little suit. He had lost a lot of weight. The second he noticed me, he tried to run over, but Louise stopped him with a hand on his shoulder.I merely gave them a subtle nod, as if they were the family members of an ordinary business partner. The light in Louise's eyes dimmed.Matthew was there, too. He donned a white suit, lookin

"Mr. Parker hit me," Max whined. "He said he hated me. Grandma cried, too. Mom hasn't said anything. I'm scared."The call had turned into a video call. I looked at his face on the screen—tiny and pale, with swollen eyes. This was the child I had once loved with my entire being, but his next words brought me back to reality."Dad, please come back. Cook for me. Sleep with me. I won't ask Mr. Parker to be my dad anymore."What he wanted wasn't his dad. He wanted the nanny who would take care of him unconditionally."Max," I said softly, "I'm not going back."He froze, tears still clinging to his cheeks. "Why? I already said I don't want Mr. Parker."I looked at him and said, slowly and clearly, "Because I'm human, too. And humans get hurt. Once you choose to push someone away, never expect them to stay in the same place forever, waiting for you to change your mind."Max cried even harder. "I'm sorry, Dad. I'm sorry. Please don't give up on me."Oh, how I once longed to hear some

Jack was the first to text me."Hey, Harlan. There's a huge fight going on at your place. I think Matthew hit Max."My fingers tightened around my phone when I read that.Soon, he sent me a voice message. In the background, Max was sobbing hysterically. Matthew's sharp voice followed."Enough with the crying! Do you think I'm like Harlan who's going to wait on you hand and foot every day? You're driving me crazy, you spoiled little brat!"Then I heard Elaine. "Matty, how could you hit him?"Matthew sneered. "Why can't I? I'm not his father. Besides, you're the ones who said it yourselves. Harlan is old, ugly, and embarrassing. Didn't you all hate him? Now you want me to play daddy? I don't need to do that!"My heart clenched. It hurt, yet there was something bitterly satisfying about it.It was proof that not everyone would cherish Max like he was the most important thing in the world the way I had."How dare you talk to me like that?" Elaine screamed."That's exactly how I'm
