I didn’t wait to see his reaction.
If I had stayed one second longer, I would have melted into his arms and taken everything back.
So I ran.
I ran straight to my car and drove without thinking about where I was going. My head felt like it would explode.
After a few minutes, I pulled over somewhere quiet and broke down.
I was seventeen when I lost my parents in a plane crash.
Somehow, I survived that pain. I kept going. At nineteen, I became New York’s best-selling author.
That was where I met Ray.
He came to my book signing.
It was love at first sight… at least for me.
With him, the emptiness my parents left didn’t feel so heavy anymore, and now I had just thrown him away.
Voices dragged me back to reality.
I lifted my head from the steering wheel and saw a taxi driver gripping a man’s collar.
The driver looked furious.
I stepped out of my car.
“Is everything okay, sir? Can you let go of his shirt?” I asked.
“Please stay out of this, ma’am,” the driver snapped. “This man flagged down my taxi knowing he had no money.”
I walked back to my car, grabbed a hundred-dollar bill, and handed it to him.
“Here. That should cover whatever he owes.”
The driver snatched the money, muttered something under his breath, and drove off.
“Such an impatient man,” the stranger beside me said calmly. “And dramatic.”
That was when I really looked at him.
Stud in his ear. Loose sportswear. Probably around Ray’s age.
But irresponsible.
“You don’t call a taxi when you know you can’t pay,” I said.
He smirked.
Both of his hands were tucked into his pockets like he didn’t have a single problem in the world.
And suddenly, a thought crossed my mind.
If I want Ray to believe the lie…
It has to look real.
“I have an offer for you,” I said.
He raised one eyebrow.
“If you accept, I’ll pay you two million dollars.”
That got his attention.
“Two million?” he repeated slowly.
“Yes. That should cover your… recklessness.”
He chuckled softly.
“And what exactly would I be doing for two million?”
“Follow me to my car.”
He did.
Which surprised me.
I leaned against the door and took a deep breath.
“I just broke up with my boyfriend,” I said. “He’s not the type to give up easily. But if he believes I already have someone else, things will be different.”
He was watching me closely now.
“This is where you come in,” I continued. “You’ll act as my boyfriend. Eventually, my fiancé. Just for one year.”
He didn’t interrupt.
He simply kept that amused smile on his face.
Damn!.
What if he’s married?
Or in a relationship?
Or worse… a criminal? I suddenly felt desperate.
“I think you’re interesting,” he finally said.
“In a slightly insane way.”
“Huh?”
He reached into my car’s side pocket and pulled out a pack of gum like he owned the car.
“Two million to pretend to be in love,” he said while popping gum into his mouth. “You must be really heartbroken.”
“Do you want the money or not?”
He picked up my complimentary card from the console and read it.
His expression shifted slightly.
“You’re Maya Bennett.”
“Yes.”
He placed the card back down.
“I’ll call you.”
“Tomorrow. Twelve p.m.”
“Bring your lawyer. This is business after all.”
“Wait..”
But he was already stepping away.
“I didn’t even get your name!” I called after him.
He stopped walking for a moment.
Then he slightly turned his head.
“I will call you.”
And just like that, he walked away.
I stood there staring after him.
I just offered a stranger two million dollars.
Great.
********
It was one hell of a night.
I didn’t go home. I couldn’t risk running into Ray.
Instead, I drove straight to Lilly’s place.
I guess I’ll be crashing there for a while.
The moment I stepped inside, she was already waiting.
“What is wrong with you?” she demanded. “You weren’t answering your calls. Ray was here. He told me everything.”
She crossed her arms.
“Seriously, Maya? That was your plan?”
I dropped onto the sofa.
Typical Lilly.
“This is for the best,” I said tiredly. “If he hates me now, he won’t be shattered when I’m gone.”
She looked at me like I had lost my mind.
“You don’t know that.”
“I know him.”
I took a deep breath.
“There’s something else.”
She slowly sat down.
I told her everything.
The taxi. The stranger, and the offer.
Her eyes widened.
“No.”
“Absolutely not.”
“Maya, stop making reckless decisions.”
“It’s not reckless.”
“It’s insane!”
“He needs to believe it,” I said quietly. “Or he won’t let me go.”
She started listing a thousand reasons why this was a terrible idea.
I barely listened.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I opened the message.
Let’s meet at 12 p.m. tomorrow. Lobby Children’s Park. Bring your lawyer… Jay
Jay.
So that’s his name, and just like that… This madness became real.
MAYA“Princess, mummy has somewhere very important to be tonight, maybe some other day, okay,” Jay said on my behalf.“More important than me?” she asked immediately. “You said I am the most important person in the world.”I blinked, surprised at how quickly her mood shifted. The smile that had been lighting up her face disappeared, replaced with a moody face. It felt like a pinch in my chest.“Of course you are,” I said quickly, reaching out to touch her cheeks. They were soft and fluffy. “Of course you are. You know what, mummy will cancel everything because you are the most important person in the world.”“Yes!”She jumped excitedly, grabbing my hands. We started playing with her toys, most of which I had brought for her. She showed me everything with so much enthusiasm, explaining each toy. I listened, nodding, laughing when she laughed. My heart felt full in a way I couldn’t explain.I had imagined this moment so many times. Quietly, secretly. But I never thought it would come li
MAYA“Tell me, Maya. Is that why you told me you’re not ready? I saw the way you looked at him. You have never looked at me like that. Tell me, do you still love him?”I looked away immediately. It wasn’t that I didn’t have an answer. It was that I didn’t trust myself to say it out loud. Seeing Jay again after all these years had affected me. I had buried carefully, something I had convinced myself no longer existed. “I’m tired,” I said instead, “I can’t do this right now. Work on your insecurities. I am getting married to you, not him.”John stepped outside, running his hands through his hair in frustration. I watched him go, feeling a dull ache settle in my chest. He didn’t deserve this confusion, this version of me that kept slipping away from him at the slightest trigger. John is a good man. He has always been a good man. And I will not do to him what I did to Ray.I haven’t forgiven myself for that.I walked back into the room slowly and reached for my purse on the makeup table.
MAYA“I really do love you. Unfortunately, I found out how much I do when you already slipped through my hands.”My heart was palpitating. It started beating too fast, trying to remind me of something I had worked so hard to bury.I stood up almost immediately, needing distance.“Thank you, Jay,” I said quickly, forcing my voice to remain steady. “I will see you some other time.”John was already close. I didn’t dare look back.I followed him out to the car; my chest was still tight, my thoughts were all over the place.“Are you okay?” John asked as he opened the door for me.I nodded, but even that felt like too much effort.“You’ve been swallowing hard,” he added, leaning in to help me fasten my seatbelt.I had been struggling with it for a while. My fingers refused to cooperate, trembling slightly like they had a mind of their own.“Yes, I’m fine,” I said. “It’s just that everything feels surreal. Walking back into my old life like this.”He started the engine.“That isn’t your li
JAYThis is my Maya. My eyes are not playing tricks on me.Her reaction confirmed it just as much as mine did. She looked frozen, like she had seen a ghost. Her fingers tightened around her clutch, the same habit she has always had whenever she is nervous. Some things never change.“You know my soon-to-be daughter-in-law?” Austin asked, clearly pleased. His words echoed in my head, daughter-in-law.My eyes dropped slowly to her hand, and there it was. The diamond ring, sitting perfectly on her finger, shining under the lights, Maya is engaged.“I am sure they do,” Austin’s son said quickly. He stepped forward and shook my hand; his grip was firm. He tapped my shoulder lightly and leaned closer, his voice low enough for only me to hear.“Please, play along. I don’t want my father to know the whole story.”I didn’t even know what story he was referring to.Everything in my head was already spinning. How I managed to sit down at that table, I have no idea. My body was there, but my mind
JAY“Maya, where are you? My eyes are closed, I can’t see you.”I had to hold myself back from laughing. My daughter and I were playing hide-and-seek, and she was terrible at hiding. I could clearly see her tiny legs sticking out from under the table, but I pretended not to notice.“Where are you, my child?” I called again, turning in the opposite direction.I walked past her hiding spot deliberately, giving her the illusion that she had outsmarted me.A second later, she burst out from under the table and ran straight into me.“Dada, I am here!”“Oh no,” I said, scooping her up. “You won. I couldn’t find you.”She giggled loudly as I tickled her, her laughter filling the room in a way that made everything else fade.My daughter is three, but sometimes she behaves like she is six. The doctor said she is developing faster than expected. She speaks clearly, understands everything, and asks questions that make you pause before answering. She is brilliant. She took after her mother in tha
MAYAI still can’t believe it is my baby’s second birthday today. It feels like yesterday when I held his tiny fingers in my hands for the very first time and named him Drake. That moment remains the most beautiful moment of my life. The exact second it hit me that I was now a mother. That someone this small, this perfect, depended on me for everything.I walked around the venue one more time, my eyes scanning every corner, making sure everything was perfect before the guests started arriving. The decorations, the balloons, the cake table, the tiny chairs arranged neatly, all of it had to be right.“And here comes the most beautiful mother of the celebrant.”John’s voice came from behind me before his lips touched mine lightly, then my cheeks.“You should take a break,” he said softly. “The event planner has everything under control. We went for the best, remember?”I wrapped my arms around his waist, looking up at him.Sometimes I still wonder how I got this lucky. This man had walke
