Chapter 2

Author: Mohini
Nathan's POV

I calmly wiped the blood from my nose. Pale as my face probably was, I managed a faint smile and shook my head.

Two years ago, I took eight punches in a row at the underground casino before losing consciousness.

The casino owner kicked me awake and told me, "The doctor says you've got cancer. There's no cure. Before you kick the bucket, you'd better make yourself useful.

"Serve, sleep with rich women—do whatever it takes to make me some money."

They sent me to the beds of wealthy women who frequented the casino. During the day, I had to take punch after punch until I spilled blood. Whatever I earned went toward painkillers.

My next paycheck would probably have to go toward an urn.

I quickly wiped away the remaining blood, held out my clean hand, and put on my best customer-service smile. "30 bucks, ma'am. How would you like to pay?"

Claire stared at my pathetic state, her fist clenching tighter and tighter. "What on earth are you—"

"Maybe Nate's still mad at us," Victor said guiltily, cutting her off.

He tapped his card on the POS machine and then took my hand. "Come home with us, Nate. We've got plenty of money at home."

His smile was warm and kind, belying the painful pressure of his fingers against my hand. I instinctively shoved him away.

Claire immediately stepped between us. "If you've got a problem, take it up with me. Leave Victor out of this."

Dad and the others watched me warily, too, as if I were some kind of wild beast. I stood there in a daze, then put away the POS machine and turned to leave.

Claire screamed hysterically behind me, "Are you sure you're not coming home? Fine! Then don't ever come back!"

I didn't look back.

The doctor had predicted I had a week left. I could spend it anywhere I wanted.

The next day, I showed up for work as usual.

My manager blocked my way at the entrance. "Starting tomorrow, you're done here. Ms. Finley paid your termination fee and ordered us not to hire you again."

He blew out a ring of smoke. "Did you piss her off or something? She seems to really hate your guts. I'd start looking for somewhere else to die if I were you."

I grabbed the hem of his shirt, my voice rising in desperation. "You can't fire me! I still need money for an urn! If you're firing me, at least pay me what I'm owed!"

He kicked me away with all his might. "Got hooked on selling drinks, did you? Just die anywhere but here!"

At his command, the staff threw me out of the nightclub.

In a daze, I made my way back to the basement room I rented. At the entrance, I found all my belongings scattered haphazardly across the ground.

The landlord blocked the doorway, looking at me like I was some kind of plague. "Get the hell out and don't drag me into your mess!"

My withered fingers clutched the last of my medicine. I couldn't even imagine what kind of trouble someone like me could possibly cause them.

I raised my head and saw Claire and Victor's wedding announcement on a giant billboard. Nearby, passersby shrieked with excitement.

"Claire bought her fiancé a custom-made wedding suit worth three million dollars! How romantic!"

"I can't wait for the wedding of the century. I heard it's costing 30 million. Just getting a glimpse of it would be worth it! Victor is such a lucky man!"

…

I dug through my pockets and scraped together every last coin I had. All that remained was 5.45 dollars, barely enough to buy the cheapest bottle of painkillers.

Just then, a payment reminder popped up on my phone from the man I had ordered the urn from.

"You're buying an urn, not a damn mansion. Why are you dragging your feet? If you can't afford to die, then don't. Pay the balance already!"

The outstanding balance was 85 dollars.

The pain of my illness was so unbearable that I could barely stand, yet I had refused to shed a single tear. But watching that giant screen flaunt their obscene wealth, I finally broke down.

Tears of bitter humiliation streamed down my face. With trembling hands, I dialed Claire's number. "Why did you have them throw me out?"

A deafening crash of breaking objects erupted from the other end.

As if on the verge of a breakdown, Claire screamed at me, "I told you to take it up with me if you had a problem! You made yourself look like the victim and labeled Victor as the homewrecker! Are you happy now?"

Nathan's POV"Nathan, it's Dad. How are you doing now? I'll sell everything I own to pay for your treatment. Just come home, okay?"Dad was sobbing so hard he could barely speak. I had never heard him this heartbroken before. Alas, I no longer needed his belated concern."I'm doing fine. Thanks for asking."Hearing the distance in my voice, he fell silent for a beat before breaking down even harder. "Son, do you really have to talk to me like that?"The next second, Victor snatched the phone away."Nate, Dad is doing awful now because of you. I don't care how immature you are, but how can you stand by and let him worry himself sick over you? Don't you feel bad at all?"I simply smiled to myself. After everything I had been through, I could honestly say I had done right by everyone.Victor's voice cracked with sobs. "Claire still hasn't woken up. She got into that accident because she was going to look for you. You just want to destroy us all, don't you?"I tightened my grip on

Nathan's POVHonestly, I had prepared myself for the worst when I knocked on Lorrie's hotel room door. All I had to do was sell my body for some money and give myself the most dignified ending I could afford. It wasn't as if I hadn't done this before.Out of habit, I took off my jacket, unbuttoned my shirt, and sat down on the luxurious king-sized bed.Lorrie stood nearby, arms crossed, watching me with a teasing smile. "Are you sure about this?"I closed my eyes for a second and nodded. Then, she took my hand and carefully buttoned my shirt back up, one at a time. "Just tell me how much you need. And don't ever do this again."For a moment, I sat there, confused. Without warning, tears spilled from my eyes. "Why are you helping me?"Lorrie settled lazily beside me and chuckled. "Looks like you have a pretty bad memory, Mr. Gray."I froze, my mind drifting back to two years ago. I was at the end of my rope when I walked into the underground casino alone, desperate for anything

Third-Person POVWhen Claire saw Lorrie, her fingers clamped hard around the doorframe. The veins on her forehead bulged with fury. "Where is Nathan Gray?"One thing was certain—Nathan's geolocation showed that he was inside this very room.Lorrie blocked the doorway, looking thoroughly amused."Isn't he your husband? What are you doing here looking for him? The guy in my bed is my new favorite, a model who's just starting out. Wanna join?"Claire glared at her and pulled up the location tracker on her phone."The system says he's here. Hand him over now, or I'll take you down with me before you lay a single finger on him!"Before Claire could explode, a male model with a chiseled six-pack stepped out of the room, his hair still dripping wet. "Ms. Finley? What brings you here? Are you here to join us?"Only when she saw him did the knot in her stomach finally loosen. She slammed the door shut and stormed off. For a moment, she couldn't decide whether to feel relieved or frustra

Third-Person POV"So, Nathan Gray was the homewrecker this whole time? He really got me with that victim act. What a way to take advantage of everyone's kindness.""And his brother was still sticking up for him. That's how he repays him? What a disgusting, shameless man."The computer screen was filled with scathing comments about Nathan. Claire couldn't bear to read another word. She shut the laptop and rubbed her temples.Nathan's father, Bernard Gray, sighed beside her. "This is strange. He used to be so stubborn and proud. Why did he agree so easily to take the blame for being the homewrecker?"And all that over 300,000 dollars? He wouldn't have given that kind of money a second thought before."Doubt surfaced in Claire's eyes. She shook her head, as if it could dispel her unease. "Maybe he's finally learned his lesson. Maybe he's willing to accept my relationship with Victor."She stared blankly into the flames dancing in the fireplace, her thoughts drifting back to three y

Nathan's POVWhen the livestream started, comments from those who sided with me flooded in. Everyone condemned Victor for being a homewrecker. The last trace of pity from Claire's eyes vanished. She handed me a slip of paper and told me to read it aloud."I'm sorry, everyone. My brother, Victor Gray, is actually Claire Finley's rightful partner. I put on a pitiful act to farm sympathy because I wanted to take his place."Victor put on a show of kindness. "Nate, if you're scared, you don't have to clear things up. I'll take on all the public pressure."I smirked dryly and pushed him aside. Then, with everyone watching, I read the statement word for word. I bowed my head to the livestream audience."I'm the homewrecker. I'm sorry…"Public opinion turned on a dime. A torrent of abuse poured in."We actually stood up for you, and this is how you repay us? Have you no conscience?""How disgusting. You're a homewrecker. At least have some shame to hide it!""How could you do this t

  • Only I Didn't Get the Script   Chapter 3

Nathan's POV"What the hell did I ever do to deserve this?" Claire screamed. "Until Victor gets better, you won't earn a single penny!"I wanted to explain that I had nothing against Victor, but before I could say a word, a black van pulled up in front of me. The men from the underground casino climbed out, brandishing clubs as they closed in."Can't make money, yet you're always finding ways to cause me trouble! I got you a job serving drinks, yet you still managed to get yourself fired. You want to go back to taking punches or what?""You owe the casino 300,000 dollars in breach-of-contract fees. Get the money together now!"My face was bereft of color. "I swear I don't have any money…"All I got in return was a brutal beating. I knew the feeling of a club slamming into my body all too well. So, why did it hurt so much more this time? When I opened my eyes again, I was back in the home I had dreamed of returning to for so long. It was as luxurious and warm as I remembered.Ap
