Chapter 3

Author: Mohini
Nathan's POV

"What the hell did I ever do to deserve this?" Claire screamed. "Until Victor gets better, you won't earn a single penny!"

I wanted to explain that I had nothing against Victor, but before I could say a word, a black van pulled up in front of me. The men from the underground casino climbed out, brandishing clubs as they closed in.

"Can't make money, yet you're always finding ways to cause me trouble! I got you a job serving drinks, yet you still managed to get yourself fired. You want to go back to taking punches or what?"

"You owe the casino 300,000 dollars in breach-of-contract fees. Get the money together now!"

My face was bereft of color. "I swear I don't have any money…"

All I got in return was a brutal beating. I knew the feeling of a club slamming into my body all too well. So, why did it hurt so much more this time?

When I opened my eyes again, I was back in the home I had dreamed of returning to for so long. It was as luxurious and warm as I remembered.

Approaching me was Dad's loving face. Desperate to feel his touch, I reached out to him. The next second, his palm swatted across my face.

"Are you trying to drive me to my grave? Victor is Claire's true love! How could you spread rumors online that he's a homewrecker? And to think I was going to bring you home. Now, I see there's no point!"

A news alert popped up on my phone. "Finley Group CEO's Fiancé Accused of Being a Homewrecker. The Husband Was Kicked Out of His Own Home and Left to Fend for Himself."

I shook my head, about to explain, but Claire threw a cup of water in my face. Her expression was cold and hostile, so foreign that she frightened me.

"Those injuries on your face are just makeup, aren't they? You went to all this trouble just to drive Victor to the edge, right? Tell me—what will it take for you to leave him alone?"

Something inside me died. Suddenly, death didn't feel so scary anymore.

I stared at the ceiling and let out a silly little laugh. "300,085 dollars. Once I get the money, I'll never bother you again."

The living room fell deathly silent.

Claire suddenly stormed up to me and took me by the collar, her eyes dark with fury. "What did you just say?"

She stared at me in disbelief for a long time, as if she had never known me at all.

"Nate."

Victor's voice broke the tense silence. He rushed over and dropped to his knees in front of me. "Honestly, I don't care if you call me a homewrecker. But the wedding is coming up.

"You should at least think about Claire's reputation and Dad's pride."

Their pride and reputation?

I had spent the past three years fighting to survive under other people's fists. I could only afford to eat when they tossed me a few bucks in tips. Whatever dignity I had was long gone.

All I wanted before I died was to pay off every last debt and give myself a decent urn to be buried in. Was that too much to ask for?

My mouth was full of blood, yet I could only manage a foolish, pathetic grin.

Victor froze for a second, then snatched up a knife and held it against his face, threatening to disfigure himself.

"I'll ruin my face and then admit at the press conference that I'm the homewrecker. I'll give up my place, Nate. Is that enough?"

As he spoke, the knife's tip hovered just above his pale cheek, about to cut through the barrier.

Claire lunged forward and snatched the knife away. "You did nothing wrong, Victor!"

Dad hurried over to comfort him, his heart aching. "My precious son, if you hurt yourself, I won't be able to go on living either!"

I stood apart from them, leaning against the wall for support, looking every bit like the villain of the piece. The farce dragged on for more than ten minutes before things finally settled down.

Claire looked at me with utter disappointment. Her voice was almost cruel as she tested me one last time.

"Go on livestream and set the record straight about Victor. Admit that you're the homewrecker, and I'll give you the money you asked for."

Nathan's POV"Nathan, it's Dad. How are you doing now? I'll sell everything I own to pay for your treatment. Just come home, okay?"Dad was sobbing so hard he could barely speak. I had never heard him this heartbroken before. Alas, I no longer needed his belated concern."I'm doing fine. Thanks for asking."Hearing the distance in my voice, he fell silent for a beat before breaking down even harder. "Son, do you really have to talk to me like that?"The next second, Victor snatched the phone away."Nate, Dad is doing awful now because of you. I don't care how immature you are, but how can you stand by and let him worry himself sick over you? Don't you feel bad at all?"I simply smiled to myself. After everything I had been through, I could honestly say I had done right by everyone.Victor's voice cracked with sobs. "Claire still hasn't woken up. She got into that accident because she was going to look for you. You just want to destroy us all, don't you?"I tightened my grip on

Nathan's POVHonestly, I had prepared myself for the worst when I knocked on Lorrie's hotel room door. All I had to do was sell my body for some money and give myself the most dignified ending I could afford. It wasn't as if I hadn't done this before.Out of habit, I took off my jacket, unbuttoned my shirt, and sat down on the luxurious king-sized bed.Lorrie stood nearby, arms crossed, watching me with a teasing smile. "Are you sure about this?"I closed my eyes for a second and nodded. Then, she took my hand and carefully buttoned my shirt back up, one at a time. "Just tell me how much you need. And don't ever do this again."For a moment, I sat there, confused. Without warning, tears spilled from my eyes. "Why are you helping me?"Lorrie settled lazily beside me and chuckled. "Looks like you have a pretty bad memory, Mr. Gray."I froze, my mind drifting back to two years ago. I was at the end of my rope when I walked into the underground casino alone, desperate for anything

Third-Person POVWhen Claire saw Lorrie, her fingers clamped hard around the doorframe. The veins on her forehead bulged with fury. "Where is Nathan Gray?"One thing was certain—Nathan's geolocation showed that he was inside this very room.Lorrie blocked the doorway, looking thoroughly amused."Isn't he your husband? What are you doing here looking for him? The guy in my bed is my new favorite, a model who's just starting out. Wanna join?"Claire glared at her and pulled up the location tracker on her phone."The system says he's here. Hand him over now, or I'll take you down with me before you lay a single finger on him!"Before Claire could explode, a male model with a chiseled six-pack stepped out of the room, his hair still dripping wet. "Ms. Finley? What brings you here? Are you here to join us?"Only when she saw him did the knot in her stomach finally loosen. She slammed the door shut and stormed off. For a moment, she couldn't decide whether to feel relieved or frustra

Third-Person POV"So, Nathan Gray was the homewrecker this whole time? He really got me with that victim act. What a way to take advantage of everyone's kindness.""And his brother was still sticking up for him. That's how he repays him? What a disgusting, shameless man."The computer screen was filled with scathing comments about Nathan. Claire couldn't bear to read another word. She shut the laptop and rubbed her temples.Nathan's father, Bernard Gray, sighed beside her. "This is strange. He used to be so stubborn and proud. Why did he agree so easily to take the blame for being the homewrecker?"And all that over 300,000 dollars? He wouldn't have given that kind of money a second thought before."Doubt surfaced in Claire's eyes. She shook her head, as if it could dispel her unease. "Maybe he's finally learned his lesson. Maybe he's willing to accept my relationship with Victor."She stared blankly into the flames dancing in the fireplace, her thoughts drifting back to three y

Nathan's POVWhen the livestream started, comments from those who sided with me flooded in. Everyone condemned Victor for being a homewrecker. The last trace of pity from Claire's eyes vanished. She handed me a slip of paper and told me to read it aloud."I'm sorry, everyone. My brother, Victor Gray, is actually Claire Finley's rightful partner. I put on a pitiful act to farm sympathy because I wanted to take his place."Victor put on a show of kindness. "Nate, if you're scared, you don't have to clear things up. I'll take on all the public pressure."I smirked dryly and pushed him aside. Then, with everyone watching, I read the statement word for word. I bowed my head to the livestream audience."I'm the homewrecker. I'm sorry…"Public opinion turned on a dime. A torrent of abuse poured in."We actually stood up for you, and this is how you repay us? Have you no conscience?""How disgusting. You're a homewrecker. At least have some shame to hide it!""How could you do this t
