Only Regrets Remain

After I ended the call, I got a pop-up notification of Ruby Anderson's live location.

It indicated that she was at a mansion on top of a mountain.

Ruby had bought it three years ago for our future marriage.

I drove there.

The door was ajar. When I walked in, the floor was covered in shirts and underwear.

The clothing trailed all the way from the living room to the bedroom.

I clearly heard chatting and heavy breathing in the bedroom.

"You brought me back to your marital house today. Aren't you afraid that Arthur would suddenly show up?"

"He won't. Today's the day we're supposed to register our marriage. He'd still be waiting at the city hall like a fool."

I hung my head. A cold sensation overcame me, and I struggled to breathe.

It had been more than a thousand days. Evidently, she remembered the date and time we once agreed upon.

I laughed at myself and opened the bedroom door.

I did not even flinch when I saw the two intimate figures on the bed.

All I did was take out my phone and started taking photos of them.

Ruby was startled by the shutter noises. She saw me and looked a little flustered, which was unlike her usual self.

She pushed Ted Reid aside and quickly pulled the blanket over her body.

"How did you know that I'd be here? Did you stalk me?"

I looked at the photos that I had just taken and smirked.

"If I'm not here, how else would I be able to enjoy this show? I believe that the risque photos of the richest woman in town would be worth a lot of money."

Ruby's face fell.

In contrast, Ted looked calm as he put on his clothes.

Then, he wrapped his arm around Ruby and pulled her into his embrace.

As he did that, the blanket slipped off her body and exposed much of her bare body.

I felt nauseated looking at the hickeys on her body.

Ted cocked an eyebrow at me tauntingly.

"Arthur, if you'd come a little later, maybe you two could still make it to city hall before it closes.

"Why don't you pretend you didn't see anything and let us finish our business? You may even take a few more photos."

My hand clenched tightly at my side.

When I looked at Ruby, I asked with a hoarse voice, "If this is the case, why did you propose to me three years ago?"

Before she could answer, Ted laughed as though he had heard a joke.

"Because it's exciting.

"I bet she didn't tell you about our pact that she would only marry you until went we'd used up a thousand condoms."

My face went pale. I recalled the 997 condoms in her safe.

"Ted's right."

Ruby, who was silent all along, suddenly spoke up.

She took out her phone, and I received a bank transfer notification the next second.

I glanced at it. Under the long string of zeros, she put a remark: Compensation.

"My promise still stands. After I complete the pact with Ted, I'll look for you."

All my resentment and all the questions I wanted to ask lodged in my throat.

I remembered what she'd looked like when she proposed to me..

When others looked down on me and accused me of being with her for her money, she set off fireworks that could be seen by the whole city.

Since then, everyone knew that I was the only man she would marry.

However, reality taught me a painful lesson.

"Don't stand there like an idiot. You're a man, be generous."

Ted put his arm around Ruby's shoulders and stared at me mockingly.

I looked at him expressionlessly and walked into the bedroom.

Before they could come to their senses, I picked up the vase on the table and smashed it against Ted's head.

His blood splattered on my face. I looked at Ruby, who was dumbfounded.

"Sure, I'll be generous. You may continue."
