Chapter 3

Author: Codfish
"Of course not." Cecilia walked over with a smile. "Everyone knows just how Elina feels about Luca. Besides, even Don Lamond said that his illegitimate son was ruthless. Anyone who gets close to him could lose their life at any moment.

"Elina is a coward. She might just die from fear just before actually marrying that illegitimate son. She's hoping to become the future Donna here. How could she accept that?"

She spoke loudly, as if she were worried that other people could not hear her. Her mocking laughter echoed in the banquet hall.

In my previous life, I would have started trembling in the face of this mockery and looked to Luca helplessly for help.

But I did not.

I just stared at Cecilia's smug face coldly and said, "Whatever you say."

At this moment, all I wanted was to get away from the center of attention and be as far away from these people as possible.

So, I turned around and intended to step past Cecilia, but when I brushed shoulders against her, Cecilia suddenly moved and crashed into me. She also grabbed my hand and placed it on her shoulder.

Before I could react, I saw her let go of my hand and fall down with a scream. Her head struck the edge of a table, knocking over all the wine glasses on it. The glass shards from the red wine glasses splattered everywhere.

"Cecilia, are you okay?!" Luca lunged over and squatted next to her to help her up gingerly.

Cecilia was covered in red wine, and blood flowed from her head because it had hit the table.

She shrank into Luca's arms and wept. "Luca, Elina shoved me! I'm so scared…"

"I didn't!" I quickly defended myself, but when I saw the others' expressions, I could tell that they didn't believe me.

I gave a bitter smile to myself.

That made sense. If Cecilia dared to set me up right before everyone's eyes, she must have been ready. To them, I had pushed Cecilia, and I had no way to prove otherwise.

Luca helped her up and glared at me. "Elina, do you really think that you can do whatever you want just because you're about to get engaged to me? Apologize to Cecilia right now."

I met his gaze and repeated, "I told you before, I didn't do it."

"Slap!"

My head snapped to the side, and my mind went blank for a moment. Then, I tasted blood in my mouth.

"Stop lying. Elina, you disappoint me," Luca snapped in annoyance. "Everyone saw you push her. Why are you still trying to defend yourself? I'm already going to get engaged to you. Why are you still trying to antagonize Cecilia?

"Are you going to hang that favor from your father over my head for the rest of my life?"

When I saw his disappointed gaze, I remembered the first day I came to the Catani family.

My father had once been Don Lamond's underboss, and he died to protect Lamond. Then, Lamond brought me to the Catani family. He gave me the promise of marrying one of his sons and that this son would become his successor.

On the first day I saw him, Luca said, "Don't be scared. I'll protect you."

However, he had clearly already forgotten his promise and even saw our engagement as a burden and a way for me to threaten him.

When they saw that the argument was getting heated, some people wondered whether they should step in to stop it, but they did not dare come forward. To them, Luca was already the future Don. No one dared to make him angry at this point.

"Looks like you still haven't learned your lesson," Luca said coldly. "The future Donna of the Catani family cannot be a petty woman. Once we're engaged, you'd better work on that temper of yours."

Engaged?

I laughed. "Luca, I won't—"

Just then, a commotion outside the banquet hall interrupted my words.

Lamond had arrived.

Marco had received my message. On his way to my room, he heard me crying for help. He knocked Luca down beside the window and pulled me free from his grasp. "Are you okay?" The first thing he did was to make sure that I was safe. I shook my head and looked at Luca. Cecilia heard the commotion and rushed over as well. When she reached the door, she saw Luca struggling to his feet to get into a standoff with Marco. The tension in the room terrified her into silence. "Luca, I already told you that I had chosen to marry Marco of my own free will.""But you should have picked me!" Luca roared. He was far too emotional and refused to listen to anything else. "Didn't you pick me in the previous lifetime?! You should have been my wife, and we would have had a child of our own!"When I heard him talk about our unborn baby, I felt my heart squeeze in pain. "You've really lost your mind." I glared at him coldly. "I did love you before, but I can still tell who exactly is suitable fo

The things that happened during the engagement party soon spread all over the family. Everyone talked about what Luca had said and mocked Cecilia for being delusional, but no one dared to gossip about Marco. After all, no one wanted to become the next person he punched. We spent three months preparing for our wedding. Those three months were also the first time I had such close contact with Marco. The rest of the world said that he was the most brutal weapon Lamond possessed, but when he was with me, he became incredibly gentle. He would listen to me and respect my feelings. He would also pay attention to my reactions. Even if I only stared at the lilies at a roadside flower shop for a brief second, those lilies would be sent to my room by the evening. As I stared at the lilies in my arms, I found myself unable to remember why I had devoted my whole heart to Luca in my previous timeline. Even so, I felt lucky that I got a second chance so that I could make another choice

During the party, many people came over with wine glasses in their hands to congratulate me. They sang me all sorts of praises, but I could tell from their slightly stiff smiles that none of them believed that I had made the right choice. One of Luca's lackeys also had to force a smile while he braced himself and congratulated Marco and me. Since Luca had not become the successor, it was only natural that he would need to suck up to someone else. Under my careful watch, the lackey's face suddenly stiffened, and fear appeared in his eyes. However, after mumbling just a bit, he left in a hurry. I instinctively turned around and nearly crashed into Marco's arms. "Careful." Marco's voice came from above. I could not help but turn a little red. Suddenly, I remembered how he had held me tightly as I lay barely conscious in a pool of blood in the previous timeline. He had pleaded for help with a voice full of fear. "Help! Somebody save her!"I struggled to open my eyes, and

Everyone turned to look at me in shock. Luca froze, wondering whether his ears were playing tricks on him. "What did you say, Elina?"I gave him a cool look and repeated loudly, "I choose Marco Catani as my fiancé."Whispers erupted in the surprised crowd. "Elina didn't choose Luca?""Is this a joke? Didn't everyone say that she loves Luca deeply and confessed to him ninety-nine times? Didn't she swear that she would marry no one else but him?"Amid the crowd's disbelieving gaze, Marco stepped forward from the shadows and stood beside Lamond. The spotlights shone on him, and everyone could see a frightening scar on his eyebrow. The people fell silent because they remembered the rumors regarding Marco, and they did not dare continue with their discussions. Lamond gave him a pleased look before saying loudly, "From now on, Marco will be my successor!""Father!" Luca rushed forward with a shout and demanded answers. "There must be a mistake! How could Elina choose him?"He t

Everyone looked to the door, even Luca. Luca hadn't paid any attention to what I was saying. Lamond strode in. Following him was a handsome young man with a brooding expression. He stood in Lamond's shadow. Just like before, no one paid attention to him, but my eyes immediately went to him. I remembered that when I was nearing my due date in the previous timeline, Cecilia had locked me up in a dark basement for seven days. Just as I was about to breathe my last, Marco had barged in. He had done everything he could to save me and my unborn child, but it had already been too late. That had been my first time seeing such obvious panic and devastation in this usually reserved man. Luca's curses dragged me from my reverie. He quickly ordered the mess to be cleaned up and had someone send Cecilia back. But Lamond had already noticed the unusual situation in my corner. He stopped in front of me and noticed the red handprint on my cheek. Concerned, he asked, "What happened?"Bef
