Emily’s hand froze on the doorknob.

For reasons she couldn’t explain, her heart began to pound against her ribs.

She looked at Mrs. Martha.

The older woman’s face had gone pale.

“Go on,” she whispered gently.

“He’s been waiting.”

Emily let out a nervous laugh.

“I still think you’ve got the wrong girl.”

Mrs. Martha didn’t answer.

Instead, she pushed the office door open.

The room was strangely quiet.

Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting long shadows across the polished wooden floor.

Standing before the glass was a man.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Dressed in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit that looked like it had never known a wrinkle.

His hands rested behind his back as he stared out the window.

He didn’t turn around immediately.

For a moment…

Neither of them spoke.

Emily frowned.

That’s him?

She had expected an old social worker.

Maybe a lawyer.

Definitely not…

…this.

Even from behind, the stranger carried an air of authority that made the room feel smaller.

The silence stretched.

Then, as if sensing her presence, the man slowly turned around.

Their eyes met.

Everything stopped.

His breathing hitched.

The confident businessman who had negotiated billion-dollar deals without blinking suddenly forgot how to breathe.

It’s her…

The eyes.

The same colour has his

The smile.

Even the stubborn tilt of her chin…

She looked exactly like the child he’d spent fifteen years trying to look for

No…

Trying to find.

His fingers trembled ever so slightly before he curled them into a fist.

Fifteen years.

He had imagined this meeting thousands of times.

He had rehearsed every word.

Yet now…

His mind was completely blank.

Emily shifted awkwardly.

“Um…”

She waved a hand.

“Hello?”

The man blinked, as though waking from a dream.

“I’m sorry.”

His voice was deep and calm.

“I’m Adrian Kingsley.”

Emily’s eyebrows shot up.

Kingsley?

Even she knew that name.

Everyone did.

Kingsley Group wasn’t just another company.

It was one of the biggest business empires in the country.

Its CEO had appeared on magazine covers more times than movie stars.

She looked him up and down again.

“You don’t look like the type of person who gets lost.”

A faint smile tugged at Adrian’s lips.

“No.”

“So…”

Emily tilted her head.

“Why are you here?”

His smile disappeared.

“I came to see you.”

“Why?”

“Because I’ve been looking for you.”

Emily laughed.

“I’m pretty sure we’ve never met.”

“We haven’t.”

“Then why would you spend fifteen years looking for a complete stranger?”

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into the inside pocket of his suit jacket.

Emily instinctively took a step back.

He noticed.

A flicker of pain crossed his face.

He slowly pulled out…

A photograph.

The edges were worn from years of being carried around.

He held it out to her.

Curiosity got the better of her.

She accepted it.

The picture showed a young woman with bright eyes and a gentle smile.

She was holding a baby wrapped in a pink blanket.

Emily stared at it.

Something about the woman felt…

Familiar.

But she couldn’t explain why.

“Who’s this?”

Adrian looked at the photograph as though it were the most precious thing he owned.

“Her name was Sophia.”

Emily looked up.

“…Was?”

A shadow crossed his face.

“She died fifteen years ago.”

“I’m sorry.”

“So am I.”

Silence settled between them.

Emily handed the photograph back.

“I still don’t understand.”

“What does this have to do with me?”

Adrian’s fingers tightened around the photo.

“Everything.”

He took a slow breath.

The next words were the hardest he had ever spoken.

“Fifteen years ago…”

“The woman in this photograph gave birth to a little girl.”

Emily waited.

“Then she disappeared.”

“My investigators searched every city.”

“Every orphanage.”

“Every hospital.”

“There was never a trace.”

Emily folded her arms.

“I’m sorry that happened…”

“…but I still don’t see why you’re telling me this.”

Adrian’s eyes locked onto hers.

“Because…”

“I believe…”

“…that little girl is you.”

The room fell silent.

Emily stared at him.

Then…

She laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was ridiculous.

“Mr. Kingsley…”

“I think your investigators need a refund.”

“I’ve lived here my entire life.”

“No billionaire has ever come looking for me.”

“You’ve made a mistake.”

Adrian didn’t argue.

He simply reached into his briefcase.

This time…

He placed a sealed envelope on the desk between them.

“What is that?”

“A DNA report.”

Emily’s smile slowly faded.

“I didn’t ask for one.”

“I know.”

“I had one done.”

“…Without my permission?”

“No.”

His voice remained steady.

“The orphanage agreed after I showed them the court order.”

Emily turned to Mrs. Martha.

The older woman lowered her eyes.

“It’s true.”

Emily suddenly felt the room spinning.

Court order?

DNA?

Why would anyone go that far?

She looked back at Adrian.

“What exactly are you trying to say?”

He met her gaze.

Every word carried the weight of fifteen lost years.

“I’m not here to ruin your life.”

“I’m here because…”

His voice broke for the first time.

“…there’s a chance…”

“…that I’m your father.”

Emily’s fingers tightened around the edge of the desk.

Her lips parted.

But no words came.

Behind the office door…

A second black luxury car rolled into the orphanage.

And the man stepping out had no intention of letting Adrian claim Emily first.

Morning came quietly. For the first time in what felt like forever, Emily woke up without the sound of alarms. No shouting. No running footsteps. No breaking glass. No masked men.Just sunlight.Soft golden light slipped through the hospital curtains, spreading across the room and warming the pale walls.Emily blinked slowly. For a few seconds, she didn’t remember where she was. Then she felt the hospital blanket covering her.She heard the faint beeping of the monitor beside the bed.And suddenly, everything came rushing back. The orphanage. The fire.Lily.The attack. The strange blue symbol on her wrist.Helix.Subject Zero. Her father.Or fathers.Whatever the truth was.Emily groaned and pulled the blanket over her face.“Too early.”A small voice came from beside her.“It’s almost nine.”Emily froze. She slowly lowered the blanket.Lily was sitting on the other bed, staring at her.Emily frowned.“You’re awake?”Lily nodded.“I’ve been awake.”“How long?”“Since seven.”Emily st

The hospital had finally settled into an uneasy quiet. The chaos of the night had faded into the soft beeping of monitors and the occasional footsteps of nurses moving through the pediatric ward. Most of the children were asleep now. Some had been given medication for their injuries, while others simply seemed exhausted from everything they had endured.Emily, however, couldn’t sleep. She remained beside Lily’s bed, her fingers loosely wrapped around the little girl’s hand. Lily had fallen asleep hours ago, but Emily still hadn’t moved. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the orphanage again—the smoke, the screaming children, the masked men, and that strange blue symbol burning beneath her skin. And then there was the voice she’d heard inside her head.Run.They’re coming.Emily shivered. She looked down at her wrist. The symbol was no longer glowing brightly. It had faded to a faint blue mark beneath her skin, almost as though it had never been there at all.Almost.“You’re going

The helicopters hovered over the orphanage, their searchlights sweeping across the broken windows and smoke-filled courtyard. The sound was deafening, but somehow it wasn’t the helicopters that frightened Emily the most. It was the silence that had settled over the men around her.Adrian stood in front of her, his body tense as he watched the aircraft above. Dante remained a few feet away, his gun raised and his eyes moving from one window to another. Neither man seemed willing to explain what the symbol meant, and Emily was beginning to realize that whatever secret they were hiding was much bigger than she had imagined. Then she heard it.A child crying.Emily’s attention immediately shifted away from the helicopters.“The children.”She looked toward Adrian. “We have to get them out.”Adrian turned toward her. “Stay close to me.”Emily shook her head. “I know where they’re hiding.”Before Adrian could stop her, she hurried down the smoke-filled hallway.“Emily!”Dante followed, moti

They had really hoped Emily would never develop it.Adrian’s face had gone completely pale. For several seconds, he simply stared at the glowing symbol on Emily’s wrist as though the sight of it had confirmed his worst nightmare. Beside him, Dante had gone unusually still. The confidence that had filled his expression only moments ago was gone, replaced by something Emily had never expected to see from him.Fear.Real, unmistakable fear.Emily noticed.Even through the dizziness clouding her mind, she noticed the way both men were looking at her.“Why…”Her voice trembled as she pressed her hand against the wall.“Why are you looking at me like that?”Neither man answered. The blue symbol pulsed beneath her skin again.Once.Twice.Then a sharp wave of pain shot through her arm.Emily gasped and grabbed her wrist.“Ah!”Adrian immediately moved toward her.“Emily!”Dante caught his arm before he could reach her.“Don’t.”Adrian turned sharply.“Let go of me.”“You don’t know what will

Silence fell over the hallway. For one brief, terrifying moment, even the children seemed to forget how to breathe.Dante Moretti stood at the end of the corridor, the barrel of his pistol still smoking slightly in his hand. His amber eyes were fixed on the masked man who had one arm wrapped around Emily, holding her firmly against him.Dante’s expression was frighteningly calm.He wasn’t shouting. He wasn’t making threats. He simply looked at the man’s hand on Emily’s shoulder and said, in a voice so quiet that everyone heard it clearly,“Take your hand off my daughter.”Emily’s breath caught. My daughter? The words seemed to echo inside her head. The masked man looked at Dante for a moment before letting out a low chuckle.“And if I don’t?”Dante’s mouth curved into a cold smile.“Then today becomes the last day your family remembers your name.”A shiver moved through the hallway.Behind Dante, his men stepped forward as one.
