Chapter 1

Late night.

I grabbed the thin dress I'd set aside and went to Leon Lowell's door.

After the wedding, he said he didn't want to mess with my sleep and moved to the next room.

Sounds sweet. Reality? Two weeks married and we hadn't even held hands.

I pushed the door open.

He'd just showered—his hair still dripping, a towel at the back of his neck. He stopped when he saw me on the bed.

"What are you doing here?"

Flat. Always flat.

I didn't answer. Just watched him.

The robe hung loose—chest half-covered, faint abs, sharp nose, long fingers, clean lines.

A face like that shouldn't disappoint anyone.

Yet six months in, our marriage felt like a display case. Pretty. Empty.

Not tonight.

I was done waiting.

"I'm here to sleep," I said. "You there, me here—what's the point of being married?"

I wanted an answer.

He paused. His eyes moved over my dress. Two seconds.

"Fine."

'That's it?'

Now I was the one thrown off.

He walked over. Calm, steady—but the air tightened anyway.

Only a dim night-light. He lay down. Cool damp skin brushed my face.

My heartbeat stumbled.

I wrapped my arms around his waist.

His entire body locked.

He lowered his head, voice rough. "Do you want me to... help you?"

Before finishing, he opened the drawer like muscle memory.

I already knew.

Yep. A finger cot.

Heat shot straight to my chest. I snatched it and threw it at his face.

"Help me? That's what you think this is? We've been married six months! Are you ever gonna stop hiding and actually be my husband?"

My voice cracked sharp.

Too dark to see his face, but I felt his stare—heavy, impossible to read.

The more I thought about it, the worse it got.

"Leon, if you can't, just say it! You think you're the only guy alive? Like nobody else would want me?"

We were married. Why did I always sound like I was begging while he acted like he was doing charity work?

His throat tightened. "That's not... what I meant."

But he still didn't come closer.

Even when he finally leaned down to kiss me—hand on my cheek—third time, fourth time...

I was ready.

He still stopped.

Every time he pulled back like there was a line he refused to cross.

My heart went cold.

I grabbed my clothes, stood, and slammed the door hard enough to shake the hallway.

I went straight to my bestie's place.

My phone kept buzzing. Ignored.

Suki glanced at it. "You're not even gonna check?"

I tipped my head back, swallowed a mouthful of alcohol, then lit a Kablon. The burn scraped my throat raw.

I powered my phone off.

"Why'd you even buy these?" I muttered. "One drag and I'm dead."

She grinned, playing with the pack. "They're cute."

A few more drinks in and my walls just... dropped.

I wasn't even trying to hide it anymore.

One question kept looping.

'Why won't Leon touch me? Don't tell me... he's not into women?'

I shook my head.

Back in high school, he dated. Rejected girls too.

Cold—not clueless.

Leon sighed and rested his chin on my shoulder. "Then I'll wait for you.""You better.""Don't worry." He kissed my cheek. "I'll keep waiting."That night I was drawing when Leon suddenly hugged me from behind."Stop." I pushed his hands off. "I'm working.""What's more important, work or me?""Work."He bit my earlobe, voice low. "Really?"My hand jerked. The pen scraped a line across the page."Leon!""Yeah?""You ruined my draft!""Fine." He turned me around. "I'll make it up to you in bed.""You—mm..."He covered my lips, one arm tight around my waist. The kiss spun my head. My arms looped around his neck before I realized. After a long moment, he finally pulled back."Still drawing?""No." I caught my breath. "You messed it up.""Perfect." He lifted me and headed upstairs. "Then do something else with me.""You're ridiculous!""Yeah. I am."***Morning hit, and every muscle hurt.Leon was already up. Breakfast and meds were set by the bed.I was about to t

"I know."Leon walked in with breakfast. When he saw Dad awake, he came over. "How are you feeling?""Much better." Dad looked at him. "I'm trusting Winona to you.""Don't worry."After breakfast, Mom and Valerie showed up.Mom saw Dad awake and started crying again.Valerie lingered by the door, unsure."Winona, can we talk outside?"I followed her into the hallway. "What is it?""I've decided to go abroad."I froze. "When?""Next week." She looked at me. "This time I'm really leaving. I won't come back.""Why?""Because staying here just makes everyone miserable." A faint smile. "And I've learned some things can't be forced."I stayed quiet."Winona, I'm sorry." She suddenly bowed. "I've wronged you for years.""Forget it." I turned away. "It's over.""Thank you."She turned to leave."Valerie."She stopped. "Yeah?""Take care of yourself."Her eyes went red. She nodded.Back in the room, Leon was talking with Dad.He stood when he saw me. "Do you really hate her that much?""I don't hate her." He nuzzled my neck. "She's just in the way.""In the way of what?""Me kissing you."My face burned. "Can you be serious for once?""No." He flipped me onto the couch and pinned me there. "With you? Never.""Leon!" I shoved him, cheeks on fire.He didn't move. One arm braced beside me, boxing me in. "What?""Can you let me breathe?""No." He dipped closer, lips brushing my ear. "I've held back long enough."I was about to say something when my phone rang.Mom.I answered. She was crying. "Winona, your dad's in the hospital."I shot up. "What happened?""Heart attack. They're resuscitating him."My head buzzed. The phone almost slipped from my hand.Leon took it, said a few quick words, then hung up and pulled me toward the door."Let's go. Hospital."***By the time we arrived, Dad had been moved to a regular room.Mom sat by the bed, eyes swollen and red. Valerie was there too. She stood when she saw me."Win

"Maybe." I smiled. "But I am happy."She patted my shoulder. "Then that's all that matters."Halfway through the movie, Valerie called."Winona, can I see you?""What's it about?""I want to apologize."I stayed quiet for a few seconds. "Fine. Three tomorrow. Usual place."After I hung up, Suki looked at me. "Your sister?""Yeah.""You're actually going?""I should." I sighed. "We need to clear the air.""I'll come with you.""No. I'll go alone."***The next afternoon, I went to the café.Valerie was already there. She stood when she saw me."Winona."I sat across from her. "Go on.""I'm sorry." She lowered her head. "I shouldn't have done that.""And?""I've figured it out." She looked at me. "Leon loves you. I should let go.""You should've realized that earlier.""I know." A bitter smile. "I was too full of myself. Thought he'd fall for me."I said nothing."Winona, can we still be sisters?""That depends on you."Her eyes brightened. "Really?""But." I h

My face heated up. "Can you be serious?""I am." She grinned. "So? How good is he?""Suki!""Don't be shy." She grabbed my hand. "We're best friends. Spill."I thought for a second, then leaned in and whispered a few words. Her eyes went wide. "No way?""Way.""Damn. He looks so proper. Didn't expect him to be that wild."My face burned. "Lower your voice.""Relax, nobody's here."The door opened.Leon stood there, expression dark."Why are you back?" I asked, guilty."Forgot a file." His gaze flicked between us. "What were you talking about?""Nothing." I shook my head fast.Suki smirked. "We were talking about you."He raised a brow. "About what?""About how good your 'skills' are."I wanted the floor to eat me alive.Leon just smiled and walked over, kissing my forehead."Thanks for the compliment."Suki burst out laughing. My face felt ready to combust.Leon grabbed the file and headed out. At the door he added, "Sleep early. Don't stay up talking."Once he l

"I'm busy.""Busy with what? Busy being all lovey-dovey with Leon?"My temper snapped. "Dad, get this straight. She did that to herself. I didn't make her.""You—""And her liking Leon? That's her issue. Leon is my husband." I took a breath. "If you think I'm wrong, then I just won't come back."I hung up.Leon pulled me into his arms. "Mad?""No." I muttered, "Just tired.""Then ignore them.""They're my parents.""I know." He kissed my hair. "But you're my wife. I'll protect you."My nose stung. I hugged him tighter.***That night, Suki called."Winona, I heard about your sister.""Yeah.""You okay?""I'm fine." I lay on the bed. "Just annoyed.""Your parents on your case again?""Yeah. Said I have no conscience.""They're insane." Suki swore. "She did it to herself. Why blame you?""Forget it." I switched gears. "What've you been up to?""Blind dates.""Again?""My mom's forcing me." She sighed. "Says if I don't get married soon, I never will.""See anyone
