Chapter 54

Emma’s POV

I am relieved to be back in my normal, everyday clothes. Apparently we have to come back for a “fitting” so they can hem the gown. I was noticeably drowning in fabric. Lacey is a very sweet woman. We say our goodbyes and Leo has gone to get the car. Ruth and I are walking arm in arm toward the parked car.

Suddenly behind us there are screeching tires. I look over my shoulder, recognizing one of the cars. “Ruth, go!”. I shove Ruth toward the car, hoping Leo will grab for her. I make a dash for the car myself but am grabbed by my hair and a bag thrown over my head. I thrash harder than I have ever thrashed. I hear a man groaning and I try running, only to land on the pavement, scraping my hands and knees.
