Chapter 2

Author: Vincent Gale
I'd heard that line from Imogen countless times.

But what exactly did she expect me to do? Did she want me to pretend none of it had happened?

"Callum's still young," she said, completely unfazed. "What's wrong with giving him a little extra attention? And stop turning everything into an argument. It was just a wedding. I'll make it up to you next time, okay?"

"Right." I shook my head bitterly. "So our wedding wasn't as important as Callum's upset stomach."

"It wasn't about his stomach," she retorted. "He had no one else to look after him, and I was worried something might happen to him if I left him alone."

She said it as though that explanation alone should've been enough to make things right.

But Callum had become indispensable to Imogen a long time ago. Whenever she felt lonely, she called him. Whenever something good happened, he was the first person she wanted to tell. Whenever she was upset, he was the one she turned to.

She was always saying, "Callum can't manage without me."

No wonder he'd grown so comfortable inserting himself into our relationship.

"So you knew my parents would both be at the wedding and that they both had heart problems, but you still chose not to come."

My voice tightened, my tone laced with reproach.

"Did you ever stop to think about what might happen if the shock was too much for them?"

Imogen froze for several seconds before asking, almost hesitantly, "Are Mr. and Mrs. Beckett okay?"

"Worry about yourself," I snapped, tossing the remark over my shoulder as I headed for the door.

"Jonas, wait!"

She got up and hurried after me. Before she could say anything else, Callum caught her by the arm.

"Immy, don't you see what he's doing?" he asked, glancing at me with a faint, mocking smile. "He's trying to guilt-trip you into staying. And I've known for a long time that his parents aren't exactly innocent. They'd do anything to get you to marry him. They even—"

I didn't let him finish. I clenched my fist and crossed the room in an instant, landing a punch squarely in his face.

The impact made Callum's eyes widen. He stared at me in shock, a dark bruise already forming around his eye as blood trickled down his nose.

"Jonas, did I hit a nerve?" he shouted. "Is that why you're freaking out?"

Imogen couldn't bear it anymore. She rushed forward and wedged herself between us, shielding Callum with her body.

"Jonas, you've completely lost your mind!" she screamed, her face twisting with anger. "What the hell are you trying to do?"

If this had happened in the past, I would've listened to her without question. For seven years, I'd done everything I could to keep her happy.

But now, that version of me was gone. I grabbed the nearest chair and raised it over my head, ready to bring it down on Callum.

I actually wanted to hurt him badly enough that he might never get back up.

"Jonas, if you're going to hit him, you'll have to hit me first!"

Imogen spread her arms, standing firmly between us.

I stared at her, unable to believe this was what we'd become after seven years together.

"Am I wrong, though?" Callum shouted, his voice shrill. "If your parents hadn't dragged Immy around to pick out wedding dresses, bought her an expensive diamond ring, and even pretended to be sick just to pressure her into marrying you, do you honestly think she'd have said yes?"

My eyes never left Imogen as I lowered the chair.

"Is that what you think too?"

She looked away and didn't say a word.

My heart sank.

And for the first time, I understood the suffering Mom had gone through.

A month earlier, she'd suddenly developed severe heart palpitations and had barely made it to the hospital in time. After that, she seemed to have a feeling that she didn't have much time left.

There was only one thing she wanted before she died—to see me marry Imogen. Only then could she rest in peace.

To fulfill Mom's wish, I'd spent an entire day and night kneeling outside the Steele family's house, begging Imogen to agree.

Eventually, she reluctantly said yes.

Mom and Dad had always told me that their greatest wish was to see their children start families of their own and spend their later years surrounded by children and grandchildren.

They'd spent their entire life's savings to make our wedding happen. They had me take Imogen shopping for the most beautiful wedding dresses in town and buy the most expensive diamond ring they could afford.

But when the day finally came, Imogen didn't even show up.

Realization finally dawned on me. To her, none of us had ever mattered.

Imogen's eyes suddenly widened. She looked down at her chest, only to realize she'd been stabbed. Blood gushed from her mouth as confusion filled her eyes. She had never imagined, not even in her worst nightmare, that the person she loved most would be the one to drive a knife into her heart. But how did things come to this? She would never have the chance to find out. The bodyguards and the rest of us had rushed forward and easily subdued Callum. He couldn't see through the pepper spray, and he was swinging the knife blindly. One of those wild strikes had happened to hit Imogen directly in the heart. Was it simply terrible luck, or was it fate? Perhaps after my parents died, this was always how things were meant to end for her. I'd forgotten what expression I wore that day. All I remembered was the confusing mixture of emotions that tore through me. First came an overwhelming sense of satisfaction, and the resentment I'd carried since my parents' passing seemed to disap

While I motioned for Randall to call the police, I kept my voice steady as I spoke to Callum. "Just tell me whatever you want. Put the knife down first. You don't want to go to prison, do you?"Callum hesitated. I saw the uncertainty in his eyes and realized I was getting somewhere. For all his bravado, he was still afraid of the law. "Callum, tell me what you want," I continued. "I'll do everything I can to give to you.""You?" He shot me a glare, his voice laced with contempt. "What could a nobody like you possibly give me? Since you asked, I'll tell you. Get me a billion dollars and a plane ticket out of the country. Otherwise, I'll kill Imogen."I froze. So that was his plan. A billion dollars? He sure was a greedy bastard.I gave him a dismissive smile. But the moment I looked at Imogen, it all made sense. My mind started working, and I motioned for her two bodyguards to come over. The moment Callum saw them move, he tensed. He pressed the knife more firmly against I

"Imogen, we all know what you're like," Matthew said. "How could you do something like this and still live with yourself? If you have even a shred of decency left, take Callum and get out of here.""I don't even feel like wasting my breath on them anymore. But anyone who messes with Jonas is going to regret it."Callum shrank back and hid behind Imogen. He looked like he wanted to say something, but wisely kept his mouth shut. A sigh escaped Imogen. She could tell there was clearly no point trying to reason with us. She turned toward my parents' graves and lowered her head respectfully. But just as she was preparing to leave with Callum, he had to cause another scene. He actually spat on my parents' graves. All of us stared at him in disbelief."Callum, what the hell do you think you're doing?" I roared, the veins on my forehead throbbing. Then I turned to Imogen. "Is this what you call coming here to pay your respects?"You'd better leave while I'm still holding myself bac

Now that my parents were gone, my friends insisted on paying their respects. I gladly agreed. Later, I returned to my parents' house and began sorting through their belongings. That was when I found a vintage bracelet. It had been passed down through our family for generations, and Mom had planned to put it on Imogen's wrist herself after the wedding. But life had other plans. None of us could have imagined so much could change in such a short time. One by one, I packed away my parents' belongings. With every item I put away, tears welled up in my eyes. It was only then that it truly sank in—everything I'd lost was gone forever. Regret was the only thing I could feel. Once I'd finished sorting through their things, I spotted a small note Mom had written to me when I was little. "My dear Jonas, always take good care of yourself. I want you to live a long, happy life."I finally broke down. I sobbed uncontrollably, unable to hold it in any longer. The dead were gone, and

I was already in a terrible mood, so I gave Callum one last slap. That was finally enough to knock him out. I glanced at Imogen, who was still sitting on the floor crying, and picked up my luggage. I walked out without looking back. As I passed the two bodyguards, I knew they had only been following orders. Still, after giving each of them 500 dollars, I slapped them both across the face. …Once I left Imogen's house and started walking down the street, the weight of everything finally sank in. My parents were gone, and my relationship was over. I had no one left. Just then, my phone rang. "Jonas, it's been ages! Come out and grab a drink with us."Warmth spread through my chest. "That's right," I thought. "I still have my buddies."The one calling me was Matthew Turner, one of the four of us who had been inseparable in university. Thinking about those carefree days brought a smile to my face. "Sure, Matt," I replied. "Let's meet today. By the way, are the other guys

"That can't be true!" Imogen cried. She didn't even bother holding her phone. She rushed toward me and somehow found the strength to shove the two bodyguards aside. "Immy, what are you doing?" Callum asked, visibly annoyed."Shut up!"She turned and slapped him across the face so hard that he stood there, stunned. It was the second slap he'd taken that day, and this one had come from Imogen herself. "Jonas, are you okay? I'm sorry. I really didn't know," she sobbed, tears filling her eyes and streaming down her cheeks. "I never thought anything like this would happen to Mr. and Mrs. Beckett. I swear I didn't mean for this to happen.""My parents are already dead." I stared at her coldly. "Can your apology bring them back? Don't you think it's a little too late now? Move. I need to get out."I pushed Imogen aside and walked toward the door. Completely ignoring her presence, I walked straight up to Callum and grabbed him by the hair. "Weren't you so tough just now?
