AVA

“Where the hell is he?” Riley groaned loudly, shifting her weight as we sat together on some large rocks near the edge of the shopping center plaza.

“He’s on his way,” I said, keeping my voice calm even though I was secretly just as annoyed as she was.

“I actually cannot believe he totally forgot about us. I told Dad from the very beginning not to trust Miles with the driving duties,” she grumbled, crossing her arms tightly over her chest.

I looked down at our mountain of shopping bags piled on the ground. “And I told you we should have just asked your dad for the car keys ourselves so we could drive here first.”

Riley let out a heavy sigh, nodding her head in defeat. “And you were right. Honestly, Ava, you are always right.”

Just about five minutes later, the sky grew incredibly dark, and we felt cold water droplets suddenly hitting our bare skin.

“No!” Riley and I echoed together in pure horror as we hurried to get up from the rocks.

“Quick, let’s run back toward the mall entrance!” she yelled, grabbing as many bags as her arms could hold.

We quickly picked up all the heavy shopping bags and ran as fast as our legs could carry us to get some cover under the concrete overhang. The rain started pouring down significantly faster with every passing second. We really didn't have much time to move. By the time we made it under the shelter, we were definitely wet, but thank goodness we weren't completely soaked to the bone.

“I am definitely telling Dad about this now,” Riley said angrily, wiping some stray raindrops off her face as she inspected her expensive shopping bags to make sure nothing was ruined.

About five minutes later, my phone began to vibrate violently in my hand. I glanced at the screen. It was Miles.

I swiped the screen and put it to my ear. “I’m outside,” he said immediately, his voice sounding a bit rushed and completely out of breath.

I didn't even bother wasting my breath responding to him. I just cut the call right in his face, grabbed my bags, and turned to Riley. “He’s outside. Let’s go.”

We pushed through the glass doors and walked out into the pouring rain toward the rental car. Miles didn't even bother getting down from the driver's seat to help us load the heavy shopping bags into the car. What a true gentleman.

I opened the front passenger door and took the front seat, while Riley scrambled into the back seat with all the bags, slamming the door shut behind her.

“I fucking hate you, Miles,” Riley snapped the exact second we made it inside the dry car.

“Aw, I love you too, sis,” Miles replied smoothly, not even bothering to look back at her through the rearview mirror. He started the engine, shifting the car into drive. “Look, I’m really sorry. Some unexpected things came up, and that’s the only reason why I’m late. You seriously don’t have to tell any of this to Dad.”

Riley raised an eyebrow, leaning forward between the front seats. “Well, what’s in it for me if I keep my mouth shut?”

Miles hissed, gripping the steering wheel a little tighter. “Are you fucking serious right now, Riley?”

“Five hundred dollars,” she said with a smug smile.

“Two hundred and fifty,” he argued back immediately.

The two of them kept arguing back and forth about their little bribery price, but I completely tuned out their voices. My eyes were fixed entirely on Miles. Up close, he looked incredibly messy. Actually, he looked completely manhandled. Or, to be more accurate, woman-handled.

His usually perfect hair was completely wild and messy, his button-up shirt wasn't fully buttoned properly near the top, and his lips looked a little bit red and swollen.

He was definitely just with a girl.

“Of course,” I muttered under my breath, the words slipping out of my mouth completely by accident.

Miles looked over at me immediately, his sharp eyes locking onto mine. He started properly staring at me and my entire outfit. His gaze traveled all the way down to my short skirt, which was exposing a lot of my bare thighs as I sat in the passenger seat.

Feeling his eyes burning into my skin, I quickly grabbed my large purse and placed it right over my thighs. It was my own coded, silent way of saying, “Don't fucking look there.”

I think he got the message loud and clear.

“Looks like you were really busy, huh?” I said, keeping my voice completely casual but dropping a heavy hint of attitude.

He looked away from me and forced his eyes back onto the rainy road ahead, his grip on the steering wheel growing a bit firmer. “It’s really not what you think,” he murmured quietly. He kept his voice low, making sure it wasn't loud enough for Riley to hear from the back seat.

What the hell did he mean by it’s not what I think? I was honestly expecting him to snap back with some annoying insult like he always did.

I swallowed hard, trying my best to relax against the leather seat. I really didn't want to feel this way. I didn't even know why my stomach was turning in knots or why I was feeling so bothered by his messy appearance. But right now, I wanted nothing more than to be more than thirty feet away from Miles Thompson.

MILES Her words hit me like a physical shock wave. Everything inside me froze. I stared down at her, my heart doing a massive, violent thud against my ribs. Ava was a virgin. She hadn't let any of those other guys touch her like this. Out of everyone, I was the one she was trusting with this part of her. A sudden, overwhelming wave of pure protectiveness crashed over me, mixed with a deep, fierce sense of pride. I was the first. And I was going to make sure it was absolutely perfect for her. My entire mood shifted from wild urgency to absolute gentleness. I leaned down, kissing her forehead softly, and then trailed my lips down to her jaw. “Hey, look at me,” I murmured, my voice dropping into the softest, most tender register I had ever used in my life. Ava lifted her heavy gaze, her beautiful eyes locking onto mine. “Thank you for trusting me,” I whispered genuinely, tracing the line of her cheekbone with my thumb. “I’ve got you, Ava. I promise I’m going to be so careful with y

  • Our Forbidden Obsession: Craving my Bestfriend's Brother    Against Every Rule

MILES The moment her lips touched mine, every single ounce of my self-control shattered into a million pieces. I didn't care about the rules anymore. I didn't care that she was my sister's best friend, or that my family was sleeping just down the hall. All I knew was that Ava was finally in my arms, moaning into my mouth, and her hands were tangled tightly in my hair. I gripped her waist tighter, lifting her off her feet just enough to press her back hard against the bedroom door. A sharp gasp left her throat, and I used the opportunity to slip my tongue inside her mouth, deep and hungry. I tasted the sweet lingering flavor of the expensive white wine from dinner mixed with her pure, addictive sweetness. Ava let out another breathless whimper, wrapping her arms completely around my neck as she kissed me back with an intensity that blew my mind. She wasn't pulling away. She wanted this just as badly as I did. My hands traveled down the soft fabric of her silk pajama top, trac

  • Our Forbidden Obsession: Craving my Bestfriend's Brother    Crossing the Line

AVA I didn't bother typing a response back. I simply slipped my feet into my fluffy bedroom slippers and quietly crept out of the room, making sure the door didn't make a sound as I walked down the hall to his bedroom. I knocked gently once, then twice. The door swung open, and Miles stood there. He wasn't wearing a shirt at all—only a pair of low-slung grey sweatpants. Seeing the hard lines of his bare chest and abs up close, I immediately thought to myself that coming here might have been a terrible idea. “Dork,” he said, a soft smile spreading across his face. “Are you actually going to let me inside, or are you just going to stand there?” I asked, crossing my arms to hide my nervousness. He stepped to the side, opening the space to let me walk into his room, and locked the door securely behind us. “Is Amora asleep?” he asked, leaning his back against the door. “Yeah. And for some strange reason, I just can't seem to fall asleep.” “I’ve been there,” he said smoothly. He fol

  • Our Forbidden Obsession: Craving my Bestfriend's Brother    Can't Sleep

AVA The rest of the evening went by as fast as the wind. The resort staff had arranged a live performer for the evening, a talented acoustic guitarist whose smooth, melodic voice filled the warm night air. I sat back and watched as Aunt Janet and Uncle David slow-danced on the stone terrace. It looked like they were falling in love for the very first time all over again, totally lost in each other's eyes. Chloe's parents eventually joined them on the dance floor, laughing and swaying to the music. Amora’s mother was out there too, but she was dancing with Miles. Come to think of it, I realized I had never actually heard anyone in the family bring up Amora's dad. I made a quick mental note to ask Riley about it later when we were finally alone in our room. The rest of us left at the table kept our phones out, recording sweet videos of the couples dancing under the glowing fairy lights. Chloe and Millie actually tried to involve Riley and me in a conversation or two. The small talk d

  • Our Forbidden Obsession: Craving my Bestfriend's Brother    The Anniversary Dinner

AVA “Oh, you are definitely wearing the emerald green one,” Riley said, her eyes widening as she pointed a manicured finger at the silk dress hanging on the closet door. “No questions asked. It literally makes your skin glow, Ava.” “You think so?” I asked, turning to look at the fabric. It was a beautiful, floor-length silk dress with a cowl neckline and a low, open back. It was simple but completely elegant. “I don’t just think so, I know so,” Amora chimed in from her spot near the mirror, where she was carefully putting on a pair of silver earrings. She looked absolutely stunning herself in a soft, blush-pink off-the-shoulder gown that perfectly matched her gentle personality. Riley zipped up her own dress, a bold, royal blue satin piece that fit her like a glove and completely screamed her name. “Amora is right. If you don't wear that green dress, I will personally force you into it. Tonight is my parents' 30th anniversary, which means we all need to look like absolute royalty.

MILES I finished dressing up in my fresh clothes, grabbed my bag, and walked right out of the bathroom. “Miles! Over here!” Chloe waved her hand wildly from a large table across the resort's outdoor dining patio. I looked around the crowded space. Ava, Amora, and Riley were sitting together at a completely different table on the opposite side of the patio, already eating their lunch. I let out a soft sigh as I walked over to join Chloe and Millie instead. “I keep forgetting you guys are even on this family trip with us,” I said sarcastically as I slid into an empty seat at their table. “Well, you never actually come over to check up on us anyway. You're always trailing behind your sister and her bestie,” Millie said, taking a large bite of a fried chicken wing from her plate. I scoffed loudly. “You guys are the ones who are constantly keeping to yourselves,” I said. Without even asking for permission, I reached over and snatched the other chicken wing right off her plate, poppi
