MILES

I finished dressing up in my fresh clothes, grabbed my bag, and walked right out of the bathroom.

“Miles! Over here!” Chloe waved her hand wildly from a large table across the resort's outdoor dining patio.

I looked around the crowded space. Ava, Amora, and Riley were sitting together at a completely different table on the opposite side of the patio, already eating their lunch. I let out a soft sigh as I walked over to join Chloe and Millie instead.

“I keep forgetting you guys are even on this family trip with us,” I said sarcastically as I slid into an empty seat at their table.

“Well, you never actually come over to check up on us anyway. You're always trailing behind your sister and her bestie,” Millie said, taking a large bite of a fried chicken wing from her plate.

I scoffed loudly. “You guys are the ones who are constantly keeping to yourselves,” I said. Without even asking for permission, I reached over and snatched the other chicken wing right off her plate, popping it into my mouth.

“Well, we just don't have very much in common with your sister,” Chloe said, rolling her eyes.

“And her bestie,” Millie chipped in right on cue.

“What about Amora?” I asked, relaxing back into the plastic chair.

“Amora… she is just so incredibly quiet and scared all the time. Why does she always act so terrified?” Chloe asked, looking genuinely confused.

I stared across the patio toward Amora. She was the only cousin in this entire family tree that I could actually tolerate. And yeah, she was definitely timid.

“Hey, there’s a massive party happening next week,” Millie suddenly said, breaking my train of thought.

“Let me guess. I’m a thousand percent sure it’s not even taking place in the country you and I actually live in, am I right?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Oh my goodness, Miles, you are just so incredibly boring!” Millie laughed, shaking her head.

I honestly didn't see what was so funny about flying out of the country just to attend a random party. “I can't go anyway. I have major college exams approaching very soon. It's my final year, and I have too much shit to handle.”

“I know you are always down for a good party, Miles. Just admit that you simply don't want to come with us,” Chloe said, rolling her eyes dramatically.

“Wow, you really can read my mind,” I said in a heavily sarcastic tone, leaning forward and stealing another piece of food right from her tray.

But just as I looked back up across the crowded patio, my stomach dropped. I saw the bulky guy from the bathroom walking directly toward Riley and Ava’s table.

Fuck.

I wished our tables were closer together so I could actually hear what the hell he was saying to them. I watched intently as he stopped right at their table and started talking directly to Ava.

My jaw clenched as I watched him pull out a chair. Why the hell was he sitting down with them?

“Miles?!” Chloe’s voice suddenly snapped me out of my thoughts.

“Yeah?” I replied blindly, not taking my eyes off their table for even a single second.

“I was thinking, are you actually planning to live in your parents' house after graduation?”

“Why do you ask?” I asked roughly, my chest tightening as I watched the guy lean closer to Ava.

“Because I have a friend who is a real estate agent—or, well, I don't really know what he officially does—but he is currently looking for buyers for some gorgeous luxury properties.”

“I’m not interested,” I said flatly, my voice completely cold.

Over at their table, I watched the guy lift his hand and point his finger directly over at me. The gesture made Ava turn her head, and her eyes instantly locked right onto mine across the busy patio. She held my gaze for a long, heavy second before she finally looked back at the guy. She nodded her head at whatever he said next, and then she let out a full-blown, beautiful laugh.

What the hell was so funny?

“Miles!” Chloe yelled.

“What?!” I snapped loudly, turning around to glare at her.

“I was literally talking to you! Why are you so…” Chloe trailed off, turning her head around to try and see exactly where my eyes had been glued this entire time.

A massive smirk instantly spread across Chloe's face. “I fucking knew it,” she grinned.

“Knew what?” I asked, trying to sound completely clueless.

“You have a crush on her, don't you?”

“Who?”

“Your sister's bestie.”

“She has an actual name,” I said, my voice dropping into a dangerous warning tone.

“Right, sorry. Ava,” Chloe said, using her fingers to make dramatic air-quotes in the air.

“I’m not even looking at her. I’m looking at the random guy who is currently trying to talk to my sister,” I lied, crossing my arms.

Chloe turned around to look at the table yet again. “He’s not even looking at Riles, Miles. He is literally deep in a conversation with Ava.”

“No, he wasn't. You just saw it too late,” I snapped. To stop her from talking, I reached over, grabbed her cold drink, and took a huge sip.

“Hey! Give me back my drink!” she snapped angrily.

“Go order another one. Aren't you guys supposed to be millionaires or something?” I said, desperately trying to change the subject.

She huffed in annoyance and snatched Millie’s drink instead, which caused Millie to give her the exact same angry reaction Chloe had just given me.

I completely ignored their bickering and forced my eyes back toward Ava's table. The asshole was still sitting there, completely comfortable in his chair. He leaned in even closer to tell her something in a low voice, and whatever it was made Ava laugh so hard she threw her head back.

Watching her smile at him, I don't think I had ever felt any more irritated in my entire life than I was at this exact moment.

MILES “I really missed my right-hand man,” my dad said proudly, patting my shoulder with a heavy hand. I rolled my eyes playfully. “You were the one who completely abandoned me, Dad.” “What?! That is absolutely impossible!” he laughed out loud. “Well, he simply couldn't bear to leave his beloved behind,” my mom chimed in with a sweet smile. She wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, leaning in to give him a bunch of loud, mushy kisses right in front of me. “Please stop,” I groaned, turning around and walking away from them. “Baby, come back here!” my mom called out, laughing at my reaction. “I am honestly not interested in seeing all of that,” I called back over my shoulder, keeping my pace steady. I walked straight into the resort locker room bathrooms to change out of my damp tennis gear and back into my regular casual clothes. While I was standing near the sinks, a guy with brown hair suddenly walked right up to me. He was basically the exact same height as me, but he wa

AVA “Try not to trip over your own feet, dork,” Miles said, bouncing the tennis ball on the strings of his racquet as he took his spot next to me near the baseline. He had that stupid, cocky grin plastered across his face—the exact one that always made me want to smack him. I rolled my eyes hard. “Just try to keep up, Thompson. Don’t embarrass me out here in front of your family.” Riley and Amora stood directly on the opposite side of the net. Riley looked completely ready to destroy us, while Amora seemed a little nervous, nervously fiddling with the grip of her racquet. “Hey, no pressure, Amora!” I called out over the net with a friendly smile. “We’re just messing around and having some fun, okay?” “Yeah,” Riley added, giving her cousin a gentle, supportive nudge with her elbow. “Don’t worry if you miss a shot. We’re all super rusty anyway.” Amora smiled, looking a bit more relaxed. “Thanks, guys. I honestly haven’t played tennis since I was a little kid.” Miles leaned down t

AVA The entire drive was filled with Amora and Riley catching up on past events, talking about school, and sharing inside jokes. I only pitched into the conversation whenever I was explicitly needed, spending most of the car ride staring down at my phone screen. Miles didn't even bother to crack a single joke or tease me like he usually did. His sudden silence made me feel incredibly uncomfortable. I pressed my forehead firmly against the cool glass of the car window as we drove through a pair of enormous, elegant white security gates. “Oh my God,” I breathed out softly. The luxury resort looked less like a normal vacation destination and more like a private island where high-profile celebrities secretly disappeared to whenever they got tired of ordinary life. Massive white stone buildings stretched beautifully across the sunny coastline, their private balconies overflowing with bright pink flowers. Tall palm trees swayed lazily in the warm tropical breeze. Beyond the main rec

AVA “You should definitely go with the blue shorts,” Riley said, pointing her finger at the pile of clothing options scattered across my mattress. The outfit she picked was a cute, knitted set with a matching knitted halter-top. “Yeah, you're entirely right,” I said, picking up the blue set and tossing the other clothes back into my suitcase. “Oh my gosh, I am just so excited!” Riley squealed, playfully kicking her feet in the air as she lay down flat on the bed. She had already been fully dressed and ready to go for over an hour. I guess she simply couldn't contain her absolute excitement for today. We were all going to a luxury beach resort for some mandatory “family time” before the big anniversary dinner scheduled for tomorrow night. To be completely honest, going to a beautiful resort sounded a million times better than just rotting in bed all day doing nothing. Chloe and Millie, along with their parents, had already left for the resort hours ago. It was so typical of them.

AVA I looked straight out the window at the passing city lights and pulled my phone out of my pocket. I slowly scrolled through my social media apps, doing absolutely nothing in particular on the screen, just using it as a shield to calm my racing nerves. After an hour of absolute silence on my end, we finally arrived back at the luxury family villa. Thank goodness. To make up for being late, Miles took all the heavy bags out of the car himself. All Riley and I had to do was just walk inside the house empty-handed. I knew deep down he was only doing it to stay on his dad’s good side, but I wasn't going to complain. He followed us all the way up to our shared bedroom, carrying the mountain of clothes we bought. “Just put them right on the bed,” Riley said as she kicked her high-heeled sandals off her tired feet. Miles tossed the bags onto the mattress, but then he started playfully peeking inside them to see what we bought. “What the fuck, Riles?” he suddenly said, laugh
