Chapter 4

Author: Rising Ink
The day before the graduation celebration, the living room was filled with gift boxes of every size.

Jeff stood in front of the full-length mirror, wearing a custom-made white suit, and carefully straightened his bow tie. Mom stood behind him, gently smoothing the wrinkles from his jacket.

"Mom, where's my suit?" I walked over to the couch, where garment bags were piled everywhere.

Without even turning around, Mom kept adjusting Jeff's cuffs and answered casually, "You've never liked being the center of attention, anyway. Tomorrow, just sit with everyone else and enjoy the food. It doesn't matter what you wear."

Ann walked out of her room with a dismissive snort. "Everyone's coming to celebrate Jeff tomorrow. You can wear whatever."

She glanced at me. "That white T-shirt you're wearing is fine."

I watched them fuss over Jeff, circling around him as if I were an audience member watching a play that had nothing to do with me.

"Okay." I smiled. "It's comfortable, anyway."

Jeff turned around with his usual innocent grin. "See? Henry knows how to keep life simple."

I did not answer. I simply turned around and went back to my room.

Late that night, the laughter and conversation in the living room finally faded.

I locked my bedroom door and pulled my old suitcase from beneath the desk. I packed three changes of old clothes and my college acceptance letter. That was all I took.

At six o'clock the next morning, the sky was just beginning to brighten.

The rest of the family was still asleep, resting up for the graduation celebration later that day.

Dragging my suitcase behind me, I quietly opened the front door without making a sound.

Before leaving, I gently placed my house key on top of the shoe cabinet.

In the middle of the marble coffee table lay one last thing.

A metal bookmark.

Its surface had darkened with age, and the edges were worn from years of use.

Whitney had slipped it into my hand the first time she took me to the library during our freshman year.

She had smiled and said, "Henry, from now on, all my patience for reading belongs to you."

I had kept it for three years.

Now, I left it behind on that cluttered coffee table.

I pulled my suitcase downstairs and got into a taxi headed for the airport.

The terminal buzzed with travelers as boarding announcements echoed through the building. I collected my boarding pass, passed through security, and stopped in front of the huge floor-to-ceiling windows.

Outside, the morning sun was just beginning to rise, its golden light spilling across the runway. My phone vibrated. A message from Mom flashed on my phone screen.

[Your dad and I talked all night. The graduation celebration should include you too.]

[When you wake up, I'll take you to the mall so we can buy you a suit, okay?]

I did not reply. Instead, I blocked them one after another. Dad. Mom. Ann. Finally, Whitney.

After that, I left the family group chat called ‘Our Loving Family’.

The world became quiet.

I turned off my phone, picked up my suitcase, and walked toward my departure gate.

That afternoon, I transferred $83,000 into Mom's bank account. The transfer note contained only one sentence.[I don't owe you anything anymore.]After that, I walked out of the auditorium.A sudden downpour swept across Mayland. I opened my umbrella and was about to head back to my dorm when I saw Whitney standing at the bottom of the steps. She was soaked from head to toe, but she clutched an elegant shopping bag she had somehow managed to keep dry tightly in her arms. The moment she saw me, her eyes reddened. She hurried over and stopped in front of my umbrella."Henry, I bought you the newest limited-edition collectible figure and the most expensive basketball shoes from that brand collaboration. I went to a few stores before I finally found them."She held out the bag, her voice trembling."I was wrong. I lost sight of what really mattered. I got so used to you always being understanding that I thought you'd never leave."I looked at the brightly packaged collectible and

The moment I finished speaking, the back doors of the auditorium slammed open.Mom, Ann, Jeff, and Whitney burst inside, pushing past the student volunteers at the entrance and rushing straight toward the stage."Henry! We finally found you!"Mom's eyes were red from crying. She grabbed the edge of the podium and sobbed into the microphone in front of me."You were one of the top students in the state! Do you know how hard your father and I worked to raise you and help you become such an outstanding student?"You've been angry long enough. Come home with us."The entire auditorium fell silent. Thousands of students and faculty members turned to watch. I looked at the tears on their faces, took one step back, and faced the microphone."You missed me?" My voice echoed clearly through the hall. "If you cared about me that much, then why did you throw a huge party for Jeff to celebrate his graduation, yet refuse to buy me even a single suit?"I left the family group chat and blocke

Over the next three months, I stopped paying attention to anything that happened to my family.I stayed in Mayland.During the day, I worked part-time as a computer technician at a local electronics center. On my days off, I wandered along the beach with friends I had met after moving there. With every ocean breeze, the weight I had carried for years seemed to fade a little more. Before the semester even began, I received a call from the admissions office at Seabreeze University.I had been admitted as one of the highest-scoring students in the state and the top incoming student at the university that year. The university offered me a full-ride scholarship covering all four years of tuition and housing. I was also selected for the university's highest merit award, which included a one-time $50,000 scholarship. The day the money appeared in my bank account, I stared at the long string of numbers. At that moment, I knew I no longer needed the Scott family.A few days before clas

In the video, the reporter's question left the entire ballroom silent for a full three seconds.Mom hurriedly grabbed the reporter's sleeve, forcing an uneasy smile onto her face."There must be some mistake. This is my younger son, Jeff. He scored 1420."Henry is my older son. His grades have always been average. There's no way it could be him."The reporter's expression immediately darkened. Without another word, he turned the registration form around for them to see."These results have already been verified by the State Testing Center."We came here today to interview Henry, one of the highest-scoring students in the state. Since that's clearly not who you are, we'll be leaving."The camera was switched off abruptly. The reporter and his crew turned around and walked away without looking back. The ballroom exploded."So, the older brother was actually the one who made the state's top ten? Then why are they throwing a celebration for their younger son, who only scored 1420?

When my plane landed at Mayland International Airport, rain was pouring outside. The moment I turned on my phone, it exploded with notifications. There were more than a dozen messages from my best friend, Zion Larson, along with two video clips.[Dude, Henry! Your family's graduation party has completely blown up!][Where are you? Admissions officers from Redwood University and Ashcroft University are both here! Even the local TV station showed up!]I tapped on the first video. The ballroom at the Starlight Hotel was packed with people. At the front of the room, a giant red LED screen displayed shimmering gold letters.[Celebrating Jeff Scott's Incredible Achievement!]Jeff stood center stage in his custom white suit, bathed in bright spotlights that made him seem to glow.A TV reporter held a microphone toward him while a cameraman filmed every second."Congratulations on such an outstanding achievement."A lot of people are wondering, what's your secret to getting such gre
