Chapter 1

Existence
The moment I revoked their permission to use the footage, a notification popped up at the top of my phone.

It was a reply from Daniel Whitmore, my girlfriend's childhood best friend, to the top comment on the video.

The comment read, "The way the narration and footage work together is incredible. You can tell whoever filmed this was shooting with love."

Daniel replied with a bashful emoji, "Thanks for liking it! I wrote the narration and filmed everything myself. I just love these guys so much."

The comments that followed were full of praise for his talent.

He wrote the narration and filmed everything myself?

I stared at those words, and suddenly, the whole thing felt absurd.

I met my girlfriend, Evelyn Hayes, during our freshman year of college. Back then, I was naive enough to believe a relationship was supposed to be between two people. It took me a while to realize that Evelyn always came with a little group of three.

For the first two years, I tried desperately to fit in. Whenever they reminisced about their favorite high school hangouts or laughed about the times they'd skipped class to play video games at an internet cafe, I'd sit quietly nearby, refilling everyone's drinks and listening because I had nothing to add.

At first, Evelyn would still take my hand and pull me into the conversation. "Stop talking about the old days all the time. You guys are leaving Evan out."

But as time went on, Daniel would sometimes fall silent, his expression turning downcast as he muttered that maybe he was getting in the way of us spending time together.

Somehow, that always seemed to make Evelyn annoyed with me. She'd frown and scold me. "Evan, why do you always have such a hard time fitting in? Maybe you should think about what you're doing wrong. Nobody's excluding you. You're just being too sensitive."

Things didn't change until our junior year, when Daniel discovered that I was good at photography. It was the first time any of them had gone out of their way to talk to me.

"Evan, can you take a picture of the four of us?"

From that day on, I finally found a way to stay in their circle. I became their personal photographer. Whenever we went out, I'd carry the heaviest gear, scout ahead for the right angles, or hang back to capture candid shots.

I never complained. If anything, I was grateful. Looking at the photos was the only time they ever praised me.

"Evan, you're seriously good at this."

The video, "The Friendship We Shared," really was filmed with love.

Just not the kind of love they thought it was. It was the one-sided love of someone desperately trying to earn his place with them.

I pulled myself out of those memories and pushed open the door to the photo studio. I immediately noticed Evelyn and Daniel sitting side by side, their heads nearly touching as they watched the viral video on the computer.

Evelyn had funded the studio during our senior year so Daniel could launch his own business. But I was the one who handled everything else, from setting up the studio and buying equipment to filming content every day and writing the scripts. Daniel's only job was to look good, stand in front of the camera, and smile.

When she heard the door open, Evelyn turned. Her brow immediately furrowed when she saw me. "What are you doing here?"

I walked over and calmly asked, "The video went viral. Aren't you going to mention where the footage came from in the description?"

Evelyn froze for a moment before her expression hardened with impatience. "Evan, can you not ruin the moment? Do we really have to put the name of someone who doesn't even appear on screen in the credits? Don't you think that's going to look weird?"

Daniel gently tugged at Evelyn's arm before turning to me with an apologetic, almost innocent expression. "Evan, you never liked being on camera anyway. I figured you wouldn't care about getting a little recognition. Besides, the video's doing great. You should be happy for me."

I stared at him, stunned by the sheer entitlement on his face. "I was the one who stayed up for three nights editing that video. I wrote the entire narration, too."

Evelyn's expression hardened. She stepped in front of Daniel as if she were shielding him from me.

"Does it really matter who filmed it? People love the story of the four of us, not the photographer behind the camera. Do you really have to make a big deal out of this right now? Do you have to embarrass Daniel?"

I stood there, staring at the woman I'd loved for four years. Apparently, in her eyes, everything I'd poured into them was worth less than a moment of discomfort for Daniel.

I nodded. "Fine. I won't make a big deal out of it."

  • Outsider Tag: My Footage, Their Story   Chapter 10

Three years after graduation, I officially became a partner at a documentary studio and began independently directing and filming projects that were truly my own. My name started appearing regularly on nomination lists at major film festivals. Whenever my new team took a group photo, everyone made sure to leave a spot for me right in the center. This time, someone else was always behind the camera, pointing it at me. I was no longer the shadow standing behind the lens, documenting other people's friendships while never having a place in the frame—or even my own name attached to the story. That fall, I also held my first solo exhibition at an art museum in the heart of the city. I called it "An Outsider's Mistake". At the very end of the exhibition stood a massive white wall. Projected across it were the final words: "When someone is repeatedly cut out of the frame, they shouldn't lower themselves and beg to be let back in. They should walk away and take back the camera that was

Evelyn didn't leave the city right away. Instead, she found a budget hotel near the documentary team's base and checked in.For the next several days, she showed up at the filming site like clockwork. She was doing exactly what I used to do. Quietly, she helped the crew carry heavy tripods, gathered loose cables, and bought ice-cold water for everyone. Then she'd stand silently outside the frame and watch me work. She was trying to show me she had changed. That she was willing to do all those thankless little things for me now, too. But I never gave her a second chance. I treated her like any other production assistant—polite, professional, and distant. Sometimes, I'd even offer her a courteous, "Thank you."That simple politeness hurt her more than anger or insults ever could. Two weeks later, the team was preparing to move on to another province. The evening before we left, Evelyn finally couldn't hold it back anymore. She stopped me just as I was about to get into the van

Backstage after the documentary premiere, the halls buzzed with excitement.Evelyn stood at the end of the corridor, watching me surrounded by my new colleagues as we talked excitedly about the screening. She waited until everyone had finally gone their separate ways before working up the courage to approach me. "Evan."I stopped. When I turned and saw her, my expression remained calm and unreadable, as though I were looking at a stranger. "Did you need something?" Evelyn's throat tightened. She pulled out her tablet and held it out to me. "I re-edited our graduation video." I took the tablet. In the new version, she'd restored every scene of me that had been cut—the smiles buried in the discarded footage, carefully pieced back together frame by frame. She had even changed the title from "The Friendship We Shared" to "The Friendship We Shared, All Five of Us".She looked at me desperately, like a child who knew she'd done something wrong and was hoping for one last chance to

The copyright dispute continued to snowball. Brands that had once been eager to work with Daniel began terminating their partnerships one after another. Some even sent him formal legal notices. Unable to withstand the mounting pressure, Daniel finally posted an apology on his account. But even then, he carefully avoided taking any real responsibility. "Due to a lack of communication, I failed to consider my friend's feelings, which led to this misunderstanding. Our friendship belongs to all of us. I hope we can find our way back to the way things were."When Evelyn saw the post, she went straight to Daniel's studio. "You're doing it wrong. Delete it." She stared him down, her expression cold. "State clearly that Evan was the sole cinematographer and writer of the project." Daniel gritted his teeth, staring at her in disbelief. "Evelyn, even if you back me into a corner like this, is Evan really going to come back? Have you forgotten? He blocked you everywhere." Evelyn fell s

Evelyn didn't even have time to worry about losing her graduate project recommendation. She locked herself inside the empty studio and opened the complete backup of the folder titled "An Outsider's Mistake", which contained four gigabytes of discarded footage. She clicked through the files one by one. Only then did she realize that every scene they'd cut contained something I'd once given them without hesitation. During their freshman year, she twisted her ankle on the stairs in the middle of winter. In the footage, I was carrying a heavy load of camera equipment on my back while supporting her with one arm as she limped beside me. By the time we reached the hospital, I was practically out of breath. Sophomore year, she was preparing for an interview for a study-abroad exchange program. In the corner of the frame, I sat with dark circles under my eyes after staying up for two straight nights to help her rehearse mock interview questions. My voice was hoarse with exhaustion, but

Only then did Evelyn see my breakup message. She stood there for a moment, stunned. Then she backed out of the chat and tried calling me. "I'm sorry, the number you dialed is currently unavailable."She frowned as the realization sank in. A flicker of irritation rose in her chest, but she quickly pushed it aside. "He's playing hard to get again," she said with a cold laugh. "Whatever. I'll give him a couple of days. Once he cools down, he'll realize how ridiculous this is." For the past four years, I'd never truly walked away from her. One Valentine's Day, she'd left me waiting alone at a restaurant because Daniel had gotten drunk after a breakup and needed her. I'd waited for her in the cold for three hours. The next day, all it had taken was a cup of coffee for me to forgive her. So Evelyn was certain this time would be no different. She was confident that I'd come crawling back eventually, just like I always had, and wait for her to make things right. But three full day
