Chapter 2

Existence
Within a week, Daniel landed a flood of brand deals. One of them was a well-known couples' jewelry brand that specifically requested Daniel and Evelyn for a two-person ad campaign.

The moment I saw the campaign proposal, I made it clear to Evelyn that I wasn't comfortable with it. "I don't care if you don't credit me, but at least make it clear on your account that you have a boyfriend."

Evelyn was adjusting her dress when she paused at my words and gave me a reproachful look. "It's just work. You know Daniel and I have known each other for ten years. How are you still getting jealous over something like this?"

Daniel happened to walk in at that moment. The second he heard me, his expression darkened. "Evan, if you clarify things now, the brand will think we're deliberately trying to stir up publicity. The deal will fall through."

He frowned at me. "My career is finally starting to take off. Do you really have to ruin it for me now?"

Evelyn immediately went to his side and quietly reassured him before turning to me with a cold look. "I'll do something about it once the hype dies down. You've been with me for four years. Do you really need some fake relationship status online to prove that I'm your boyfriend?"

I watched her defend Daniel and said nothing.

At that moment, I knew I didn't need any more proof of where her heart lay. It was already painfully obvious who she would choose.

On the day of the campaign shoot, Daniel specifically asked me to get behind the camera again. "Evan knows us better than anyone. He'll know how to capture the right chemistry," he said.

The ad was built around the two of them revisiting their college days, reenacting a love story that went from school uniforms to wedding attire.

Through my viewfinder, I watched Evelyn reach up to straighten Daniel's collar, looking at him with a tenderness that made my chest ache.

The crew around them immediately started cheering.

"That's so sweet! Real couples are the best!"

I kept my camera trained on them, watching as they embraced through the viewfinder. I could feel a dull ache spread through my chest.

Halfway through the shoot, I lowered my camera. "This has gone beyond a normal friendship-themed ad. You're crossing a line."

I looked at Evelyn. Her expression hardened immediately, especially with everyone watching. "Evan, there are people from the brand waiting on us. Don't bring your personal feelings into work."

Daniel hurried over, pretending to mediate. "Maybe we should just call it off. I don't want you two fighting because of me. I'll pay the cancellation fee if I have to."

The moment he said that, everyone on set started looking at me like I was the unreasonable one.

Evelyn gave me a cold look. "Are you going to shoot, or are you leaving?"

I didn't want to delay production or drag the innocent crew into our mess, so I raised my camera again.

When the shoot ended, a sudden downpour hit.

Evelyn quickly opened an umbrella and tilted it almost entirely toward Daniel, leaving half of her own body exposed to the rain as she shielded him beneath it.

Then she turned to me and said flatly, "There are too many pieces of equipment in the back seat. There's no room for you, so just get a cab home. If you stand out in the rain any longer, you'll get sick."

I stood beneath the awning and watched their car disappear down the road.

Suddenly, I remembered the winter of my sophomore year, when I had a 102-degree fever. Evelyn had told me over the phone, "You're an adult. You need to learn how to take care of yourself. Just visit a doctor."

But now, Daniel only had to sneeze once for her to forget everything she'd ever told me about taking care of myself.

When I got back to my dorm, I contacted the video platform's support team and submitted proof of copyright ownership, along with the original project files. I requested that all licensing for the footage and narration used in "The Friendship We Shared" be revoked.

As soon as I finished, my phone buzzed. It was a message from Evelyn.

"Daniel's hosting a celebration livestream tomorrow night. Get there early to set up the lights. Don't keep everyone waiting."

I stared at the message for a while. I didn't accuse her or argue. I simply replied with one word.

"Okay."

Three years after graduation, I officially became a partner at a documentary studio and began independently directing and filming projects that were truly my own. My name started appearing regularly on nomination lists at major film festivals. Whenever my new team took a group photo, everyone made sure to leave a spot for me right in the center. This time, someone else was always behind the camera, pointing it at me. I was no longer the shadow standing behind the lens, documenting other people's friendships while never having a place in the frame—or even my own name attached to the story. That fall, I also held my first solo exhibition at an art museum in the heart of the city. I called it "An Outsider's Mistake". At the very end of the exhibition stood a massive white wall. Projected across it were the final words: "When someone is repeatedly cut out of the frame, they shouldn't lower themselves and beg to be let back in. They should walk away and take back the camera that was

Evelyn didn't leave the city right away. Instead, she found a budget hotel near the documentary team's base and checked in.For the next several days, she showed up at the filming site like clockwork. She was doing exactly what I used to do. Quietly, she helped the crew carry heavy tripods, gathered loose cables, and bought ice-cold water for everyone. Then she'd stand silently outside the frame and watch me work. She was trying to show me she had changed. That she was willing to do all those thankless little things for me now, too. But I never gave her a second chance. I treated her like any other production assistant—polite, professional, and distant. Sometimes, I'd even offer her a courteous, "Thank you."That simple politeness hurt her more than anger or insults ever could. Two weeks later, the team was preparing to move on to another province. The evening before we left, Evelyn finally couldn't hold it back anymore. She stopped me just as I was about to get into the van

Backstage after the documentary premiere, the halls buzzed with excitement.Evelyn stood at the end of the corridor, watching me surrounded by my new colleagues as we talked excitedly about the screening. She waited until everyone had finally gone their separate ways before working up the courage to approach me. "Evan."I stopped. When I turned and saw her, my expression remained calm and unreadable, as though I were looking at a stranger. "Did you need something?" Evelyn's throat tightened. She pulled out her tablet and held it out to me. "I re-edited our graduation video." I took the tablet. In the new version, she'd restored every scene of me that had been cut—the smiles buried in the discarded footage, carefully pieced back together frame by frame. She had even changed the title from "The Friendship We Shared" to "The Friendship We Shared, All Five of Us".She looked at me desperately, like a child who knew she'd done something wrong and was hoping for one last chance to

The copyright dispute continued to snowball. Brands that had once been eager to work with Daniel began terminating their partnerships one after another. Some even sent him formal legal notices. Unable to withstand the mounting pressure, Daniel finally posted an apology on his account. But even then, he carefully avoided taking any real responsibility. "Due to a lack of communication, I failed to consider my friend's feelings, which led to this misunderstanding. Our friendship belongs to all of us. I hope we can find our way back to the way things were."When Evelyn saw the post, she went straight to Daniel's studio. "You're doing it wrong. Delete it." She stared him down, her expression cold. "State clearly that Evan was the sole cinematographer and writer of the project." Daniel gritted his teeth, staring at her in disbelief. "Evelyn, even if you back me into a corner like this, is Evan really going to come back? Have you forgotten? He blocked you everywhere." Evelyn fell s

Evelyn didn't even have time to worry about losing her graduate project recommendation. She locked herself inside the empty studio and opened the complete backup of the folder titled "An Outsider's Mistake", which contained four gigabytes of discarded footage. She clicked through the files one by one. Only then did she realize that every scene they'd cut contained something I'd once given them without hesitation. During their freshman year, she twisted her ankle on the stairs in the middle of winter. In the footage, I was carrying a heavy load of camera equipment on my back while supporting her with one arm as she limped beside me. By the time we reached the hospital, I was practically out of breath. Sophomore year, she was preparing for an interview for a study-abroad exchange program. In the corner of the frame, I sat with dark circles under my eyes after staying up for two straight nights to help her rehearse mock interview questions. My voice was hoarse with exhaustion, but

Only then did Evelyn see my breakup message. She stood there for a moment, stunned. Then she backed out of the chat and tried calling me. "I'm sorry, the number you dialed is currently unavailable."She frowned as the realization sank in. A flicker of irritation rose in her chest, but she quickly pushed it aside. "He's playing hard to get again," she said with a cold laugh. "Whatever. I'll give him a couple of days. Once he cools down, he'll realize how ridiculous this is." For the past four years, I'd never truly walked away from her. One Valentine's Day, she'd left me waiting alone at a restaurant because Daniel had gotten drunk after a breakup and needed her. I'd waited for her in the cold for three hours. The next day, all it had taken was a cup of coffee for me to forgive her. So Evelyn was certain this time would be no different. She was confident that I'd come crawling back eventually, just like I always had, and wait for her to make things right. But three full day
