“Let me check your schedule.”

She turned around and left his office. Alex smirked as he sank into his chair, releasing a quiet sigh of relief. To her, he must have looked calm and composed, but inside, he knew every word he had spoken carried a hidden motive. His story, every word had been true, but his intentions were far from innocent.

___

When Rainee returned home, she noticed her mother practically glowing with happiness. Suspicion flared, and she immediately glanced at Sam, silently asking if he had said anything about her and Alex. He quickly shook his head.

“Rainee, come here. Sit with me. I need to talk to you.”

She obeyed, taking her seat cautiously, her brows knitting together.

“Listen, I know you’ve just suffered a heartbreak, but life is about moving forward. Lucas....He doesn’t deserve you, or your grief. So… a friend of mine has arranged a blind date for you.”

Rainee exhaled sharply, frustration darkening her face.

“Mom, I’m not mourning. I am moving forward. You don’t

“Do you mind if I stay in this room with you?” Rainee’s eyes widened slightly at his question. Panic flickered in them, mixed with weariness and the faint shadow of fear she hadn’t been able to shake off since everything had begun. She glanced down at her hand, the same hand that had been trembling moments ago. Now, nestled securely in his grip, it was steady, as if his presence alone had forced her restless body to surrender its weakness.“I won’t take the bed,” he continued gently, sensing her hesitation. “It’s all yours. I’ll just sit here and talk with you until you fall asleep. This way, you won’t have to think about anything else. Hmm?”Her lips pressed together as she searched his eyes, looking for any hint of pretense. But she found none. Vulnerable and exhausted, she gave him a small nod. A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth, soft and reassuring, before he carefully pulled the blanket over her. Even as he tucked her in, his hand refused to let go of hers, the grip stea

She almost chuckled at the thought of him considering porridge right now. She felt a little better after realizing he wasn’t making a face or showing disgust. She got up and washed her hands and face. "I’ll help you this time. You aren’t a very good cook." She smiled at him, and he smiled back. Even though they weren’t in a very good situation, they kept trying to lighten the mood. His heart swelled with admiration seeing her so strong, even after going through something so terrible just a day ago. For the rest of the day, she taught him how to peel vegetables and cut them into cubes or different sizes and shapes. She laughed whenever a vegetable slipped through his hands, and he tried to catch it but ended up failing. "Bhahahahah... you keep shooting them like bullets!" "Stop laughing... I’m trying." He grabbed the kitchen knife again, practicing with so many butterflies in his stomach. He felt so good hearing her laugh so freely and happily for the first time, yet he kept his

"Do you want some water?" He tried to change the topic, and she nodded her head. He poured her a glass of water and helped her drink it slowly. She was frowning the entire time, and he guessed she must be feeling a headache and some fatigue from being drugged."You should lie down and close your eyes. I’ll get something light for you to eat."_____He stepped out of the room and found Rowan sitting on the couch, reading a magazine. Rowan looked up when he saw Alex coming out before standing."I’ve left some medicines in case she feels nauseous or has a headache. But avoid giving her anything strong for sleep, rest is much safer right now. Give her light, easy-to-digest foods: porridge, fruit, or soup. Keep her hydrated. Alcohol and heavy foods are off-limits. She might feel a little disoriented, tired, or emotional, just be patient. If she vomits a lot or becomes very drowsy or confused, call me immediately.""Got it… anything else I should know?""That should cover it. You made the

“How could I not come when I love you so much that it’s killing me?”. And that was the last thing Rainee heard before her eyes fluttered shut again, her consciousness slipping away. _____ “I CAN’T TRUST ANYONE! FOR GOD’S SAKE, GET THEM OUT OF THERE! I DON’T WANT A SINGLE SOUL INSIDE, DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?!” She faintly heard his voice, raw with rage, echoing as though from another world. The sound warped and thinned, breaking apart before it could fully reach her. Somewhere above her, the chopping blades of a helicopter thundered, a noise that rattled her skull until it felt like her head would split. Her eyes cracked open for the briefest moment, the sky was too blue, the ocean too green, all of it shimmering and unreal. She even managed a small, dazed smile at the drifting clouds before her lashes fell again. ______ “She’s been unconscious since last night.” “They gave her an overdose.” The voices tugged at her from the edge of awareness. She tried to force her eyes open,

She was spilling some truth, and Rainee didn’t deny it. Every word hit harder than the last, twisting in her chest like a blade.“Don’t you feel ashamed as a mother?” Her voice came out raw, trembling, though she tried to sound steady. The woman’s lips curved into a mocking smile. “I’m not here to argue or prove anything to you. There’s no need now. You, and your life, are going to be ruined after today. Do you remember your date? What was his name? Henry.... Johnson, yes, Henry Johnson.”The sound of his name made Rainee’s stomach twist. Her eyes widened, panic and confusion crashing into her at once. How does she know that?“You see,” the woman continued smoothly, like she was telling a bedtime story, “the Frasers know many secrets about everyone. And I know Henry Johnson is tangled in drugs. I was the one who told his mother to pressure yours into setting up that little blind date for you. I was the one who filed a secret complaint against him and even slipped the authorities a f

If he was stubborn, then so was she. If he had his ways of messing with her, she had her own tricks as well. Silent treatment? Acting? Now it was her turn to show him exactly what those things meant. She stepped out of the club and glanced at the phone that had been buzzing endlessly. The number was unfamiliar, and she frowned before answering. Her eyes widened at the voice on the other end."What do you want me to do?"The person spoke again, their words making her sigh in defeat."Is this really necessary? Isn’t it too late?"But they managed to persuade her, and with hesitation, she agreed to go where she was instructed. Within a few minutes, she completely forgot about her little tricks of giving Alex the silent treatment. Instead, her mind began racing with worry, how would she ever explain this to him if he found out?___The next day, Rainee found herself walking toward a Starbucks she rarely visited. Clutching her purse, she decided to buy a coffee for her boss as an apology.
