Alexandra POV

I lived to see another day in this region, but the clock was ticking. The meeting was dismissed, but in reality, I was the only one who was told to get out. The council continued to debate the matter.

“They really don’t want me here,” I whispered.

 The door to the hall slammed shut behind me. I jumped.

Xavier approached. “You’re not going to win this fight, Alex.”

“I don’t want to fight. I just want to live my life.”

He laughed. That smile used to make my insides tingle.

“Don’t you get it? There’s no life here for you! I left you. We don’t want humans here.”

I had my godmother and my best friend. They counted.

My silence unsettled him. He wrapped his fingers around my throat and backed me into the wall. I gasped, but he didn’t lighten his hold on my neck.

“You made the biggest mistake of your miserable life when you asked me to reject you. I saw the video. You were pathetic, Alex.”

“They surrounded me,” I croaked.

“Faye would have gotten out of that easily.”

I scoffed. “That’s unfair.”

He stepped closer and pressed his body against mine.

There was nowhere to run.

“The video of you getting beaten, over and over again, made me realise what a good decision I made. You didn’t deserve to be the Luna of the Iron Claw pack. I don’t know what the moon goddess was thinking, mating me to a worthless half-breed like you. Your own parents didn’t want you, which made her think I would?”

Tears stung my eyes, and my bottom lip trembled.

“The only thing you would have been good at was sloppy sex. I’ll miss your tight pussy, darling, but that’s all.”

“Get away from me, Xavier.” A rogue tear rolled down my cheek.

He chuckled. “See what I mean?”

I sniffled and tried to hold back my tears, but each word was like another punch to my face.

“You won’t last another week here.”

He marched off. I could finally breathe when he was gone. The first man I’d ever slept with was trying to run me out of the only home I’d ever known. He said he understood the pain of neglect because his father was super strict and never had time for him.

Xavier showed me a side of him the world didn’t see. All that was gone now.

“Alexandra.” The deep voice made me stop.

I looked through my wet lashes to see the Supreme Alpha standing in front of me. I quickly wiped my tears and stepped back.

“Alpha,” I bowed.

“Why are you crying?” He demanded.

His sharp tone made me jump and wonder why he was so concerned.

“I’m not crying. I have work to do in the lab. Goodbye.”

He grabbed my arm and dragged me to his chest. My heart skipped a beat and then another. His strong sandalwood scent wrapped around my neck like fingers.

“What do you want from me? Are you here to tell me you’ve changed your mind?”

He frowned. “I gave you until the next full moon to shift. I’m a shifter of my word.”

His hand felt like fire on my arm, and it gave me butterflies. Enzo was taller and more muscular than my ex-mate and definitely older, yet he looked great for his age, which I estimated to be in his early forties. Most male wolves aged like fine wine, but Alpha Enzo in particular was desire personified.

I calmed myself down before he smelled my lust.

I would die of mortification if he did!

“I think I had a pretty good idea of who made you cry,” he said and clenched his jaw.

Wolves have an incredible sense of smell and can sense other wolves easily. Lying to him was pointless.

“I don’t want any trouble, okay?” I whispered.

He barked out a laugh. “No one tells me what to do.”

He’s so arrogant! Just like Xavier.

I snatched my arm from his grip and put a good amount of space between us.

“Not when it comes to my life. I don’t need you putting in.”

“Yeah, because you’re doing a great job on your own. You’re getting beaten up, and now you’re crying. Are you too proud to admit when you need help? How the hell are you going to awaken your wolf?”

“I’ll come up with something,” I said, but I doubted myself.

It’s been twenty-three years, and I haven’t as much as heard a whisper from my wolf.

“If Ellis could help you get your wolf, she would have, which tells me she’s out of ideas. You need real help.”

Then a thought popped into my head.

“Is that why you came to River Pack?” I accused.

“What?” He frowned.

“You didn’t come for some stupid report. You came to spy on me!”

He already had this meeting planned and wanted to be sure the wolfless really didn’t have a wolf.

“I don’t have to spy personally. I have people for that,” Enzo replied.

I exhaled deeply. “Then why did you really show up at Ellis’s house? Don’t tell me it’s about a report. I won’t buy it.”

Alpha Enzo took another step forward and sucked the air from my lungs with his imposing presence. “I just want to know one thing. Do you feel different?”

“Different?” I said.

What does he mean by different?

Another step forward, and my heart hammered in my chest.

“Alexandra?” He whispered.

He captivated me with his enchanting green eyes. He held power and authority I couldn’t dream about.

I was about to respond. My lips parted suddenly, and I wanted to do more than use my lips to speak.

“Daddy?”

The trance was broken, and I created an abyss between us.

I turned to the person who broke the spell Enzo had on me.

It was Faye. She crossed her arms and glared at us.

“Wait, did you say Dad?” I gawked at her.
