MasukAlexandra POV
“My aching head,” I winced.
Wait? I’m alive? I blinked a few times, and the familiar setting of my bedroom in my modest studio came into view.
“How did I get here?”
The last thing I recalled was the icy, dark blue waters of the moon pool welcoming me into its menacing arms.
I hauled my ass out of bed and walked to the mirror.
The cuts on my face and neck were nearly gone. Any ache in my body was manageable. Someone must have found me and pulled me out.
But who?
For a second, I wished they hadn’t.
This was only going to happen again. I had a class at the university, and no doubt last night’s incident would be on everyone’s lips, not to mention my humiliating rejection.
My phone rang on my nightstand.
It must be Emmie. However, it was my godmother, Ellis.
“Hello?”
“Be at the house in twenty minutes. Not a second late.” She hung up.
A lump formed in my throat. I’m screwed.
I got changed and hurried to my godmother’s house. I’d lived with my godmother since I was sixteen. She found me living in a group home in the human world. She never offered up an explanation of how she found me or who my parents were.
She hated that subject, but she never told me she didn’t know who they were. I arrived at her three-story mansion with over a dozen bedrooms and bathrooms. She was a member of the Supreme Council. The Supreme Council governed matters that affected the entire shifter region. She lived alone, never married, nor had any children. I was the closest thing she had to family.
I knocked on the front door and held my breath.
The door rolled inwards.
“Enter,” her deep, menacing voice said.
I stepped inside, and my anxiety spiked. She was normally cryptic, but her tone worried me.
“Tell me it isn’t so, Alexandra,” she demanded.
I cringed. She knew about the rejection.
“Alexandra, how did it happen?!” Her small body trembled with rage.
“He cheated on me!” I groaned.
Ellis ran a hand down her face and shook her head. “That was your ticket to a better life in the shifter region.” She paused. “Where’s the celestial ring he gave you?”
“He took it back,” I said quietly.
She shut her eyes. No doubt she was trying to keep her temper under control.
“That was your only real source of protection, Alex.”
“Ellis, stop. He cheated on me, and I don’t know how many more times he’s done it since he got caught. Being mated to an Alpha isn’t worth that much trouble.”
“Oh, yes, it is! Alex… I fought tooth and nail to get you into the shifter region so you could be among your kind. Many people didn’t like that. There are shifters who will go to extreme lengths to show their disdain for you. I can only protect you so far.”
I couldn’t look her in the eyes anymore. Last night’s incident only proved her point.
The doorbell rang. Ellis and I shared a look.
“I’m not expecting anyone,” she grumbled. “Go to the living room.”
I nodded and marched into the warm living room. It wasn’t beyond Ellis to make me get back together with Xavier. What if I had no choice?
He’d make me grovel and beg him to take me back. It would be more humiliating than the rejection.
Laughter came from the hall, and I paused. Ellis barely laughed with anyone.
Minutes later, Ellis and her unknown guest came into the living room. Time stood still as I took in the man who towered over Ellis and me. A six-foot-four demi-god with firm, broad shoulders, a right arm covered in tattoos and muscles that could make anyone do a double-take. His commanding aura told me he was an Alpha.
I just didn’t know which pack. My pack was run by a Luna.
“Alpha Enzo, this is my goddaughter, Alexandra. She lives alone and barely visits me anymore.”
Heat rushed to my cheeks. Alpha Enzo? As in the Supreme Alpha of the shifter region. He was a scares man. He never left his pack, the Onyx pack. He was everything a Supreme Alpha should be. A man to be feared and desired.
Whoa, where did that come from? He had to be nearly twenty years older than me.
Enzo took me in with a look that pinned me to the spot and rendered me speechless.
“Alpha Enzo doesn’t come to the River Pack anymore. Of course, his visit must be of paramount importance. We have to cut this meeting short, Alexandra.”
I blinked a few times and nodded. “Right, yes, I’ll go.”
“No, wait,” Enzo said.
My heart slammed into my chest, and panic settled in. Why was he here? The Supreme Alpha had more serious things to worry about, like rogue packs trying to attack us, famine and disease control. He shouldn’t be standing in my godmother’s mansion unless it was really important.
“My visit isn’t that important. I’m here for the forest report I should have received a week ago. I don’t need to stay long.”
“Oh, I thought I sent that days ago! I’ll check my office upstairs.” Ellis hurried out of the living room, leaving me with the intimidating Alpha.
He turned his attention to me. He didn’t stop staring at me, even when I focused on the old fireplace.
“How’s life in the shifter region been?” Enzo asked.
I cleared my throat. “Alright, I guess.”
“Do you have a boyfriend?” He asked.
I met his eyes, surprise and panic written all over my face. “What? No, well… I’m single right now.”
He crossed his arms, and I noticed the series of tattoos on his skin.
“So there was someone.” He raised his brow. “Who is he?”
I exhaled deeply. “I know it’s against the law to date humans. Which is why I haven’t done it much.”
He clenched his jaw. The way his eyes pinned me to the spot made me feel he was mad at me.
“Humans, not half-humans.”
I chuckled nervously. “You know I don’t have a wolf, right?”
I might have imagined it, but the corners of his mouth twitched.
“Has that caused problems for you?” He stepped closer.
I stepped back instinctively. “No…”
“No one gives you a hard time about it?” Another step.
“Where are you going with this?” I rasped.
“Who gave you that scar?” He asked, softly yet firmly.
“No one!” I slapped a hand on my neck instantly.
“I meant the one on your forehead, Alexandra. It’s so faint it’s almost not there.”
I thought I was fully healed.
Damn it.
“Who did it, Alexandra?”
The way he said my name made my insides warm, and heat rushed to my cheeks.
“Why do you want to know?” I whispered.
“I can’t find that damn report. I’ll have to issue another one, Alpha Enzo.”
Enzo stepped back to create a safe distance as my godmother walked in.
“Don’t worry, Ellis. I’ll just have to check my office again.”
Ellis smiled. “It’s my fault completely! I’m sorry you had to come all this way.”
Enzo eyed me while he replied to Ellis.
“No worries, it was a pleasure. Maybe I’ll come to the River Pack more often.”
A shiver ran through me under his intense green eyed gaze.
Alex POV“She’s still not waking up, Celia. What are we going to do?”“Stop panicking, Serenity, just keep going.”“Oh, the moon goddess is going to destroy us all, and we deserve it.”Water rolled down my face and back, drenching my clothes. I opened my eyes and immediately blinked to fight off the water coming into my eyes.I coughed. “What are you doing?”“Oh, she’s awake. Thank goodness, I was getting scared,” Serenity said, her voice still filled with worry.“Why am I wet?” My attempt to sit up was met with a spinning head and aching bones. I sat back down on something soft, but damp too.“You passed out,” Celia said.I looked up. I was sitting on her lap. “Gosh…”I dragged my body up, but Celia put a hand on my shoulder and pushed me down. “Don’t move, please. You’re weak.”“I’m fine,” I mumbled. It was a lie. I feel awful! My mouth was dry, my eyes stung, and my body felt like jelly. I looked around the room. We were missing three she-wolves.“Where’s everyone else?” I asked.“
Alexandra POV“How!” I exclaimed. “You can’t be here! Are you sure you’re Celia? Wait, you shouldn’t even be able to answer me because you took a vow of solitude! You’re not supposed to be here. You’re not my mother. There’s a mistake.”The woman with a messy bun groaned.“This is surreal. I just met my father, and I met my mother on the same night. I’m dreaming. Scott must have knocked me out.”The other women mumbled something inaudible.Serenity pouted at me, her eyes softened, and her brows knitted together. “Celia did take a vow of solitude and celibacy. She lived out a secluded section of the abbey, but she was forced to break her vow when Scott kidnapped us two weeks ago.”“Two weeks?” My jaw dropped. “You’ve been here this whole time?”Serenity nodded. “There were a total of a hundred and fifty goddess representatives at the abbey. Many of them managed to get away.”“Others were killed…” the woman with pale eyes said.I exhaled deeply. “How did he know about the abbey?”“All S
Alexandra POVI slapped my arms over my breasts. Scott looked over the passenger seat into the back of the SUV and grinned.“I always thought you were worth dying for, Alexandra. Seeing you naked only fuels my fantasies.”“Pervert!” I shouted.“I didn’t ask you to shift and try to fight me.”Scott turned to the driver. “Step on it.”“Blanca, can you reach Enzo?” I asked my wolf. She whimpered. “I can’t, Alex. I don’t have enough strength, and he’s too far.”Crap. I’m alone in this until Blanca recovers.“Where are you taking me!?” I demanded.“A place where you’ll be perfectly hidden with your friends.”“Friends?”He chuckled. “Annoying friends, but they are necessary for my plans.”“Forget about the Mystic Pack, Scott. The old pack was divided up among the Shifter Region pack.”“I know that! That’s all your fault. You killed Alec.”I swallowed. He slammed his fists on the headboard and violently jumped on the seat.“Alec wasn’t going to give you anything tangible.”He snorted. “You d
Enzo POVThe human girl and I stumbled onto a horrific scene. I knew it would be bad miles before we reached the settlement. I almost wanted to tell her to brace herself, but I held back.“No…” Sue whispered. “How could this happen?” Her voice cracked.Men threw buckets of water onto burning tents. Women hauled buckets out of a broken well. Burnt marks stained the forest floor, the leaves turned to char and ash, but that wasn’t the worst part. The undeniable scent of blood in the earth was.“Fuck…” I muttered.Among the smells of fire and earth, I couldn’t smell my mate.“Sam!” Sue called. “What the hell happened here?”I followed Sue over to Sam. I remembered Sam. He tried to hack my mate to pieces. My wolf was already on edge, but after seeing Sam my wolf was high alert.Sam and I locked eyes. I just wanted my mate and to leave this place.“Where’s my mate?” I demanded.“They took her!” Sam exclaimed.“Who the fuck is they? If you weren’t my biggest problem who the hell is he?”Sam
Emmie POV“I don’t know why I let you talk me into this,” Susette groaned.“Now, Susette, just a little further.”She paused and glared at me. “Call me Susette one more time, Emmieline.”I rolled my eyes and continued digging. Susette was supposed to be watching me, but after a couple of minutes, we got to talking. Turns out humans aren’t so bad.She realised that not all werewolves were especially the small ones like me, who were known for being nurturing and kind.I told her why Alex and I were out here in the first place, and she offered to help me find the body that Alex insisted was buried out here.We were up to our waists in the hole, but no sign of the smoking gun. I could smell it. It was down here, blending with the earth. I had to find it before the earth reclaimed whatever was left.“There!” Sue shouted. “A skull.”My blood ran cold.“It looks human,” Sue said.I shook my head, tears stinging my eyes. “It’s not. I can tell by the scent.”“The skeleton’s been here for a lon
Alexandra POV“She’s waking up.”“She better not die on us,” a man grumbled.“Sam!”My eyes opened, and my dry lips parted. Darkness reached every corner of the tent. How long had I been here? Enzo’s probably losing his mind, and Emmie… Gosh, I left my best friend alone with a murderous human.I started to sit up immediately. How had I been so reckless?“Whoa, where are you off to? You fainted?” A woman asked me.I could barely make out her features in the dark, just her green eyes that shone like marbles.“Sam, can you get another lamp, please?”Sam grumbled, but complied.“Sam told me your name’s Alexandra,” Paige said. “I’m Paige…”My breathing was heavy, and my limbs trembled from the cold.“I need to go home. My mate… my husband must be searching for me.”“Oh, I understand. You helped us a lot. You saved my life,” Paige whispered. “They told me why you did it. You think we’re sisters, right?”I nodded slowly. “Yeah… I’ve never known my human family.”“It’s a running joke that my
Alexandra POV“No! I’m not,” I protested.“Girl, you’re pink in the face. You can’t lie to me.”“I haven’t… it hasn’t gone that far.”Emmie gasped. “You told me yourself he’s Faye’s father. What do you think she’s going to do when she finds out?”“She won’t! Please stop.” I cradled my head in my ha
Alexandra POV“Enzo? Why did you follow me?”“Open the damn door so we can talk, Alexandra.”“I don’t need to open the door,” I mumbled.“Would you rather I break it down? I can and pay for the damages later.”I groaned in frustration. I yanked the door open. “I’m so sick of Alpha males!”“What hap
Alexandra POV“My bed,” Enzo replied.“Huh?”He turned and marched down the short hall. I followed him. His room was the size of my studio, excluding the shower and walk-in closet.“This room could be two rooms. You don’t need all this space,” I stated.“Of course I do.”The room had a massive king
Alexandra POV“Please be okay,” I pleaded as I ran towards him.How did that tree just fall without a storm or a breath of wind?“Get back!” Enzo growled.“There’s a tree on you!”The veins in his neck bulged against his skin as he struggled to push the thick tree trunk off him. The end of the tree
