Azalea

“What about me, doctor?” I asked, moving closer to him. My voice was shaking with fear and desperation. “Can I sign the papers?”

The doctor looked at me carefully before speaking. His eyes were tired, like he had been working all day. “If I may ask, who are you to the patient?”

I went silent for a moment, thinking of how to answer him. My answer could mean the difference between life and death for Cassian. If I wasn’t family, they might not let me make decisions about his care.

“I am his girlfriend,” I responded, clenching my cloth tight in my fists.

“His girlfriend,” he replied slowly, like he was thinking about it. “But you’re not his family.”

My heart was pounding. I had to convince him. I had to save Cassian’s life.

“Actually, I am his fiancée,” I announced. “We will soon become family. We were planning to get married next month.”

The doctor studied my face for a long moment. I tried to look calm and confident, even though my hands were shaking.

“Okay,” he finally replied.

Azalea“Consider yourself lucky, honey,” he beamed. He was still talking to me when someone knocked on the door.“Come in,” he called, instantly switching back to his composed businessman persona.“Mr. Caelian,” a man in a white coat said as he entered. A doctor.“Come here,” Cassian commanded me.When I didn’t move, he added, “I guess my previous punishment wasn’t clear enough.”The threat in his voice made me scramble to my feet and move to his side. He sat on the edge of the bed and patted the space next to him like I was a dog.“Good girl,” he said when I obeyed. “Sit.”“What are you still waiting for, Doctor Lucian? Attend to me now.”The doctor worked in silence, cleaning and bandaging the wound I’d given Cassian. I watched, wondering if I should feel guilty for hurting him. I didn’t.“I will take my leave, sir.”“Thank you, Dr. Lucian,” Cassian stated when the man finished. “I’ll call if I need anything else.”After the doctor left, the room fell into an oppressive silence. AzaleaI drifted in and out of consciousness, floating in a sea of black nothing. Sometimes voices reached me through the darkness, muffled and distant.Sometimes I felt hands moving me, lifting me, but I couldn’t respond. My body felt disconnected from my mind. When thoughts managed to form, they came in broken fragments. Cassian’s warm smile when he first asked me out for coffee. Chiara’s face when she showed me their photo. The fake mother’s voice asking for more money. His strong hands forcing the chloroform-soaked cloth over my mouth and nose.I couldn’t tell if I was dreaming or dying. Maybe both. Maybe this was what I deserved for being foolish enough to believe his lies.*Cold. Everything was so cold.I tried to move, but my arms felt like they were made of lead. When I finally managed to open my eyes, gray morning light filtered through expensive curtains. The world tilted dangerously as I attempted to sit up, and waves of nausea crashed over me.Where was I? This question r

AzaleaPain lived in my bones now. In my lungs. In the space behind my eyes.I hated everything. My stupid heart for believing him. My stupid brain for trusting him. My stupid body for missing him even now.I wanted to tell Chiara the truth. That her perfect fiancé was a liar, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t bring myself to tell her.I finally understood. Chiara was the woman who had been calling me. Screaming at me and called me a home-wrecker.And she was right about me. I was the other woman. The stupid, blind other woman. A fool who didn’t even realize she was being used the entire time.“I hate this,” I whispered to the empty alley, before forcing myself to stand. My legs felt like they belonged to someone else. “I hate everything about my life right now.”Just when I was still thinking this, my phone buzzed. I wiped my tears away before taking my phone out of my bag.I ignored my calls after knowing it was Cassian. No, I should call him Leo.I watched it ring. Ring. Ring. Then I hung

Azalea Next Morning The next morning, I woke up with a heavy feeling in my chest. I tried to ignore it, telling myself it was just because Cassian was away and I had to meet Chiara today. But something felt wrong. At work, I couldn’t focus on anything. Every time my phone made a sound, my heart jumped. I hoped it would be Cassian calling, but there were no calls or texts from him at all, not even a “good morning” message. This wasn’t like him at all. I tried calling him, but it went straight to voicemail. I told myself not to worry too much. Maybe his plane was already in the air. Maybe he was busy with his boss. But I couldn’t stop the bad feeling growing inside me. That evening, I called Chiara. “Where do you want to meet?” I asked. “Come to the cafe near the old bookstore, Silver Bloom. Do you know it?” “I do. I’ll be there in thirty minutes.” I dressed in simple clothes, not wanting people to notice me. I didn’t know why, but something about this meeting made me feel lik

Azalea“I want to meet her,” I said quietly.“You want to meet her?” Cassian asked, sounding surprised.“Yes. Your family is also my family.”“I understand. I will plan a day for you girls to meet.”“I’m looking forward to it. How is your mom? Is she okay?”“Yes,” he replied, but he sounded very tired. “I told you it’s just a small problem. She is fine.”“I need to visit her. When are you coming to pick me up?”“I’m so sorry, honey. My boss called me to the office,” he said. “I’m at the office doing my job.”“What! You didn’t tell him your mom is sick?”“I did,” he responded. “But he said I still had to come to work.”“He sounds like a mean person,” I complained. “Tell me where the hospital is. I will go visit her myself.”“By now, I think she’s not at the hospital anymore. Emily probably took her home.”“Okay. I will go see her at home then.”“Alright. I will meet you there later. Take care, honey. I love you.”I quickly got dressed and left my house. I stopped a taxi and got in, hea

AzaleaI couldn’t sleep at all. Every time I closed my eyes, I kept thinking about Cassian. He looked so scared when he got that phone call about his mother. The way his hands shook when he grabbed his keys made me feel so sad for him.I kept turning in my bed all night. I thought about our nice evening together before that phone call ruined everything. His mother was always so kind to me when we met.His sister was nice too. They made me feel like I was part of their family, even though Cassian and I had only been dating for a few months.I called my boss, Marla, early this morning. My voice was shaky because I was so worried. I thought she would be mad that I needed time off work, but she was really nice about it.“Take care of yourself, honey,” she said. “Family comes first.”My phone felt heavy in my hand. It was already past ten in the morning, and he still hadn’t called me.He should have called by now to tell me how his mother was doing, or at least to let me know he got to the
