The grand hotel pulsed with energy, the air was thick with scented candles and expensive cologne. Laughter and soft music echoed across the ballroom as elegantly dressed men and women partied in luxury. I clutched my purse tightly, my fingers trembling as I squeezed into the nearest corner. The black lace dress I had painstakingly chosen felt too thin, too cheap against the backdrop of velvet gowns and tailored suits. My mother’s vintage heels wobbled beneath me, a painful reminder of how out of place I was. I shouldn’t have come. But Mr. Alessandro had insisted. And if he was going to be here, I needed to be present. "If you keep staring like that, your eyes are gonna pop out of your head," Melissa teased, appearing beside me. I almost didn’t recognize her behind the mask. Somehow, she had no trouble recognizing me. "Everyone here looks so… rich," I whispered, wrapping my arms around myself. "Yeah, well, mix in. Have fun. My boss will be here soon," she said before disappearing into the crowd. Fun? Not likely. My instincts screamed for me to turn around and leave, but I couldn’t. Not when I was going to be meeting my employer for the first time. He had shown me so much kindness, the least I could do was be present. "It’s not hard to spot a fish out of water," a deep masculine voice cut through my thoughts. I turned sharply, my breath catching in throat. A tall man stood behind me, hands tucked into his pockets, his light brown eyes were intense behind his mask. His expensive suit hugged his frame, exuding power and wealth. "Is this your first masquerade?" he asked, stepping closer. I nodded. "Yeah." "And it’ll be your last if you don’t get drunk and dance your worries away." He grinned, flashing a single gold tooth before grabbing my purse. "I—wait, no—" I reached for it, but he tossed it onto a chair and took my hand instead. Before I could protest, he pulled me onto the dance floor, his hands settling firmly on my waist. The music thumped through the room, but all I could hear was the pounding of my own heart. "What’s your name?" he whispered into my ears, sending a shudder down my spine. "Kelsey," I replied. "My name is Alphonso." He smirked. "I'm not going to lie, I like you, Kelsey," he said as he inched closer to me. I barely had time to process the moment before I felt his muscles go rigid. "Looks like you've got company." His voice turned sharp as he quickly let go of me. I blinked in confusion. "No...I don’t—" Alphonso pulled away and walked off before I could understand what was going on. I turned back and my eyes met with those of a man standing a few feet away. A slow, creeping terror coiled in my stomach. I tried to mix into the crowd but it didn’t matter, he followed effortlessly. I turned to run but before I could take a step, he was behind me. His scent hit me first. A strong cologne, clean but overwhelming and oddly familiar. His jacket hung open, revealing dark tattoos across his chest and neck. I had seen those tattoos before. He was the intruder! How did he know I was going to be at this party? My brain screamed at me to run. I didn’t hesitate. I lunged for my purse and bolted, pushing through the crowd, ignoring the startled gasps and annoyed whispers. The cold night air hit as soon as I stepped out of the building. The driveway was clogged with limos and sleek cars. I was trapped. I kicked off my heels and ran. The pavement burned beneath my bare feet, but I didn’t stop. I didn’t look back. Block after block blurred past me until I reached a dark alley which was a shortcut home. I hesitated only for a second, contemplating if it was worth the risk. I ignored the warnings in my mind and slipped inside. The air was thick with the scent of damp stone and garbage. A single streetlamp flickered at the far end. Somewhere in the distance, a cat screeched, followed by drunken laughter from the bar nearby. I quickened my pace, clutching my purse and heels tightly. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being followed. This alley was unsafe and thugs and pickpockets usually hid around the corners. I heard footsteps behind me. I quickened my pace until I was almost running. The footsteps stopped and I sighed in relief. My relief was shortlived as a strong hand clamped around my wrist and pulled me into a dark corner Before I could scream, I was yanked backward and slammed into the cold, hard wall. "You will never be able to run from me," a deep voice growled against my ear. My breath came out in ragged gasps as I struggled to free myself from his grip. His body pressed against mine, caging me in. "Baby girl," he murmured, his voice dripping with possessiveness. I twisted, fighting with every ounce of strength but he was stronger. His hand crushed against my mouth, muffling my cries. "You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into, Kelsey," he whispered, his tone laced with both amusement and warning. My stomach dropped as he pressed the blade of a small knife to my throat, the cold steel blade pressing against my skin. "You should’ve confessed to the authorities." Tears burned my eyes, my body was frozen in pure, unfiltered terror. "Occhio per occhio," he murmured. "An eye for an eye." The blade traced along my cheek, slow and deliberate, sending a shiver of pain and dread down my spine. I whimpered, my chest rising and falling in panicked gasps. He smirked. "I won’t give you the pleasure of an easy death, baby girl." The pressure of the blade deepened. My pulse pounded so hard it drowned out every sound. "You're mine," he whispered. "And once I've broken you beyond repair, I’ll make you pay for killing Marcus." He took the knife away and walked off, leaving me sweaty, shaking and completely terrified.I woke up feeling extremely heavy, like someone had stuffed my body with sandbags. Everything felt heavy. My arms, my legs, even my eyelids. The sheets beneath me were so soft, I spread out my hand and caressed it slowly. The scent in the air smelled like faint cinnamon, oakwood, leather and what was definitely tobacco. My heart dropped into my stomach."No....no...no fucking way," I muttered under my breath.I knew this place. Everything felt too familiar.I was back at the mansion.Panic shot through me like lightning. I pushed off the bed, my legs wobbling like jelly but I didn’t care. I stumbled to my feet and scanned the room. I froze as soon as I spotted him sitting in a chair across the room, his eyes glued to his phone, completely absorbed in whatever he was doing. He hadn’t noticed me. Perfect!I crept toward the door, each step calculated and silent, holding my breath like even air might betray me. My fingers brushed the doorknob. I turned it slowly. It made a low click sou
I could still feel the imprint of his hand over my mouth and his breath on my neck. The hungry and possessive look in his eyes was all I could think about as I stumbled out of the bathroom, my heart racing like I’d just sprinted a marathon. I was trying not to fall apart. I felt vulnerable and exposed. I knew he was still here and he was waiting for another opportunity to humiliate me again.“There you are!” Vanessa’s voice cut through the loud music, pulling me back to reality.“I’ve been looking everywhere for you,” she grinned, then leaned in with a mischievous glint in her eyes. “And I saw that man—that god awful sexy man walk out right before you. Girl, who was that? And how the hell did you bag someone that fine without telling me?”I couldn’t answer. My lips were sealed shut by panic.Vanessa’s smile faded instantly. “Kelsey?”I blinked and looked away. “I’m fine. I just... I want to go home.”She stepped closer, her thick brows knitting together. “Kelsey.. did he do something
"Kelsey, please come with me."Vanessa was practically on her knees, holding my hands like her life depended on it. Her eyes were wide with desperation and the faintest hint of excitement. She only got this excited when she was up to no good."I don’t know,” I hesitated. “After what happened at the gallery, I just… I’m not sure I’m ready for another crowd.”“I swear it’s just a regular party,” she insisted. “No creepy installations from one of your secret admirers, no surprises. Just drinks, music, and dancing. Please, I need you there.”I stared at her and despite every alarm in my head going off, I gave in. “Fine. But I’m not staying late.”Her face lit up like a kid on christmas. “Deal! Now go get ready. I laid something out for you.”I should’ve known. When I stepped into my room, the dress on the bed was practically illegal and would be banned in several countries.Black, short, backless, and tight enough to cut off my circulation. It had a plunging neckline that left nothing to
Vanessa was sobbing into my chest like a child. Her tears soaked through my shirt, but I didn’t move. I just held her till she calmed down a little."Why didn’t you tell me?” she sobbed, her fingers gripping my arms tightly. “Kelsey, why did you keep all these from me?”I closed my eyes, my mind clouded with guilt and regret. “Because there was a lot at stake,” I said softly. “My job. Your family. Lily. I didn’t want to be the one who ruined it all after you have shown me so much kindness.”She pulled back to look at me, her eyes were blood red and her face was swollen and puffy. “You should have at least told me," she murmured as she wiped her eyes with her palms."I'm so sorry my dad humiliated you and Lily-"Before she could complete her sentence, the door creaked open and Lily walked in.Her boots trailed in snow from the porch and she spread it around the door mat like a careless child. Her face fell the moment she spotted me and Vanessa together. It was almost like she knew wh
"Miss, you're under arrest for robbery and vandalism," an officer said as he clasped handcuffs around my wrists. They dug into my wrists like metal teeth as the officer yanked me out of the gallery, past a growing crowd of whispering guests.I didn’t fight. I didn’t scream.I just walked.I was too shocked to do anything. I had been stunned into silence and somehow this immense level of betrayal had silenced me completely.I kept my eyes on the floor. Humiliation burning like acid through every inch of me."Bloody thief," Lily spat as she shook her head in disappointment.I was forced into the car like a common criminal. I wasn't given a chance to defend myself or explain. Everyone had just assumed the worst of me.When we got to the station, they didn’t even ask for my side of the story. They just threw me in a chair, shoved a paper in front of me, and instructed me to sign it.“You either pay for the vase or you’ll be charged to court," an officer said.I blinked at him, my voice ho
Lily moved in a few days after I had found her and Vanessa tangled up in each other.Just like that.No warning or discussion, it was almost like my opinion about her moving in wasn't even needed.Vanessa thought it was quite spontaneous and Lily wanted to be closer to her but I knew better. She was here to watch me.To control me and make sure I didn't spill her not so little secret to Vanessa.Everywhere I turned, Lily was there. Initiating sex at the most random times, kissing Vanessa’s cheek or moaning her name out loud. Holding her hand. Sitting on her lap like she owned her. It was like a performance tailored for me.And it was working. It made me sick. It was bad enough that I had to see her at work but she had managed to crawl her way into my sanctuary.I kept my distance from her and Vanessa.I said nothing about her and Robert. Not because I was afraid, but because I didn’t know how to protect Vanessa without breaking her heart to pieces.~Vanessa’s birthday was on the last
