SARAH

I leaned back into the chair, legs draped over Marco’s lap, the last bit of red wine warm in my hand. The kitchen was behind us, quiet now. Sunlight was slipping low, bleeding into the sky in soft colors. My body still buzzed from earlier. I could feel the stone counter under my skin like a shadow.

Marco hadn’t said much. He was just sitting there, staring out past the yard, toward the hills like something was out there waiting for him. His hand rested on my thigh, fingers moving now and then, but his eyes were gone.

“Where’d you go?” I asked, voice soft.

He blinked, like I’d pulled him out of a dream. Then he looked at me, mouth twitching into something small. “There’s a place I want to take you,” he said. “Somewhere quiet.”

I sat up a little, tilting my head. “Quiet like what? Graveyard quiet or romantic quiet?”

He gave a dry chuckle. “Family vineyard. Couple hours from here. I haven’t been there in years.”

“A vineyard?” I raised an eyebrow, grinning. “You tryna get me drunk i

SARAHI woke up tangled in the sheets, the air still thick with salt and sweat. My skin still felt warm from the night before. My thighs ached in that slow, deep way that reminded me exactly what he did to me. I could still feel him. The soreness. The way he held me down. The way I kept begging him not to stop. It wasn’t pain. It was the kind of ache that makes you grin like an idiot before you even open your eyes.Light leaked in through the old shutters, soft and golden, cutting through the room like a quiet promise. I turned my head, still half-asleep, and there he was. Marco. Shirtless, sunk into the sheets like a king, one arm behind his head. That smug look already playing on his lips. Eyes half-lidded, watching me like he knew exactly what I was thinking. His hand slid over my hip, slow and lazy, like he was still claiming me.“You alive?” he muttered, voice rough and low, still soaked in sleep.I let out a small laugh, throat dry. “Barely. You didn’t give me a break.”His grin

SARAHThe door creaked when we pushed it open. The fading sunlight hit the marble floors, dust hanging in the air like the place hadn’t been touched in a while. It was quiet, too quiet. Some boxes still sat by the wall, half open. Sheets hung over the chairs and couches like ghosts.Marco stepped in behind me and stopped. “What the fuck?” he muttered, looking around. “They said they were done.”I walked in further, stepping over a roll of bubble wrap. “It’s not that bad. It’s nothing for real.” I turned back to him with a small laugh. “Relax. You’re acting like I walked into a dump.”He didn’t laugh. He looked pissed. He rubbed his temple and muttered something under his breath in Italian. From the hallway, a couple of workers appeared—two older women and a younger girl, maybe nineteen or twenty. All in cleaning uniforms, all looking a little panicked. One of them spoke up fast. “Mi scusi, Signore De Luca… ancora sistemando… oggi finire tutto…”Marco waved a hand. “Yeah, yeah. Just…”

SARAHWe got to the private terminal just after sunrise. The sky was soft, still waking up. I held Marco’s hand tight as we walked through the gates. His men were already there, moving like clockwork—checking bags, talking into radios, clearing paths without saying much. Everything looked smooth. Too smooth.I looked around, trying not to seem wide-eyed. “Jesus,” I muttered, “I feel like one of those mob wives in the movies.”Marco smirked without looking at me. “You are.”I shot him a look. “You better not have enemies in the air.”“Not anymore,” he said, real calm. Like that part of his life had already been handled. Probably had.We walked across the tarmac. The jet looked clean, quiet, expensive as hell. Not flashy, but serious. Marco’s hand stayed on the small of my back as we climbed the stairs. I could feel the heat of it through my shirt.Inside, it was too nice. Champagne already out. Breakfast waiting. The seats didn’t even look like plane seats—more like those big leather c

SARAHI woke up before the sun.Didn’t feel heavy for once. My chest wasn’t tight. My legs didn’t drag. I just… got up. Slid out of bed, careful not to wake Marco, and walked barefoot to the kitchen. The tiles were cold. The house was still.I moved on instinct—water in the kettle, coffee grounds in the filter. The familiar smell filled the space. I leaned against the counter, arms crossed, staring out the window. The sky was pale. Barely morning.I hummed under my breath. Some old tune I didn’t even recognize. Just noise to fill the quiet. We were leaving.A trip. Just the two of us. Sun, ocean, no phones. Marco actually unplugging. He swore on it last night. I didn’t believe him, but part of me wanted to.I started listing what I needed to pack in my head. Swimsuits. My journal. That little gold necklace he gave me on our first anniversary. I hadn’t worn it in months. It still had the tag on it.I smiled.Footsteps behind me made me glance over. Martha walked in, still in her robe,

ISABELLA I woke up in that same dump of a motel room. The air smelled like mildew, like wet clothes that never dried. My mouth was dry, my stomach tight. I hadn’t had a proper meal in I don’t know how long. I was living off vending machine garbage chips, crackers, whatever I could get with change. The tap water here tasted like metal, but it was all I had. Cold, flat, and barely drinkable.I sat up, blanket half off me, and looked around. The ceiling had a brown stain. I’d counted the tiles three times already just to keep from losing it. There was one broken lamp in the corner. The bathroom light buzzed every time I flipped the switch. No cleaning service. No one knocking. Just me.I dragged myself to the sink and splashed water on my face. It didn’t help. I looked up into the mirror. The glass was cracked right down the middle. I stared at myself anyway.Dark circles under my eyes. Lips pale. My hair looked like hell. Tangled, dirty, hanging off my face like it gave up on me. No li

SARAHThe TV was on low. Some lighthearted crime show called Brooklyn Dames, about two women who ran a bakery in the front and a private detective agency in the back. It was stupid and silly and full of dumb one-liners, but I loved it. One of them always wore leopard print, the other cursed like a sailor. They cracked jokes while chasing criminals and never missed a beat with their red lipstick.I had my knitting needles in hand, something soft and white starting to take shape on my lap. I wasn’t making anything in particular. Just moving the yarn around, keeping my fingers busy, keeping my mind calm. The living room was quiet. The whole house was, really. Marco had gone out earlier something about a short meeting that wouldn’t take too long. I didn’t ask for details. I didn’t want to ruin the peace. It was just me and the staff, and even they stayed out of the way unless I needed something. The morning sun poured in through the windows. I shifted on the couch, pulling the blanket ove

SARAHI woke up warm.My legs were tangled with Marco’s. His arm was wrapped tight around my waist, and his chest rose and fell slow against my back. We were still half-covered by the sheets, everything still a mess from the night before.I didn’t want to move.I stayed still, breathing him in. The way his skin smelled. The heat of him behind me. I felt safe. For once, I wasn’t waking up afraid or in pain or crying. I was just… here. With him.“Morning,” Marco’s voice was low and rough in my ear.I smiled. “You’re awake?”“Been awake. You were snoring.”“I was not.”He laughed softly. “Little grunts. Cute ones. Like a tired puppy.”I turned in his arms and faced him, putting my hand on his chest. His heartbeat was steady. I started tracing the tattoo near his collarbone. Then the one on his shoulder. He watched me do it, eyes lazy.“You always stare at me like that when I’m naked?” he asked.I smirked. “Only when you’ve earned it.”“Oh, I earned it?”I leaned in and kissed the ink jus

SARAH I woke up to the smell of espresso. Rich, warm, strong. It filled the room before my eyes even opened. “Morning, sleepyhead,” Marco’s voice came through with a smile. “Guess who brought breakfast in bed?” I blinked up at him, messy hair and all. He stood there, holding a tray with two mugs and a small plate of toast and eggs. He looked too proud for a man holding food like that. “You trying to spoil me?” I yawned, stretching carefully. My side still ached a little if I moved too fast. “Nah,” he said, placing the tray gently on my lap. “You’re just turning into a spoiled little princess. Next thing I know, you’ll be ringing a bell for grapes.” I smirked. “Only if you feed them to me one at a time.” He raised a brow, pulled up a chair beside the bed. “I’m not above that. I got butler skills.” “Marco, the last time you made toast, the kitchen almost caught fire.” “That’s slander.” “That’s facts.” He laughed, handing me the mug. “Eat. Doctor’s orders. You need t
