8. Breaking the Rules

Belle’s heart pounded when she saw the name “Mom” flash across her phone screen. She glanced at Eve, who gave her a reassuring nod. Belle answered the video call and awkwardly waved at her mother.

“Hi, honey. I’m just checking on you,” Mrs. Watson whispered. "It's your dad. He's worried about you."

Eve leaned into the camera with a smile. “Don’t worry, Mrs. Watson. We're just going to watch a movie and then go to bed. There's nothing to worry about with Belle."

Mrs. Watson chuckled and nodded. "I'm glad Belle finally has a friend. Well, then. You two have fun.”

“Bye, Mom.” Belle waved again before ending the call.

She set the phone down on the bed. This was the second time she had lied to her parents in just a week. A guilty weight pressed against her chest.

Eve climbed off the bed and started to take off her pajamas. “Hurry up and change. We're going to watch your brother's match, right?"

“I don’t know if that’s a good idea.” Belle swallowed hard. "The place will be loud and messy."
