CHAPTER 2 – The Cost of Silence

The summer Adrian turned eighteen should have been one of the happiest moments of his life.

Instead, it became the year that changed everything.

For a while, he convinced himself he could live with the situation.

Zara and Ethan were together.

He wasn’t.

Life moved on.

Simple.

At least, that was what he told himself.

But every day made the lie harder to believe.

The three of them still spent time together.

Still laughed together.

Still shared secrets and memories.

The only difference was that now, whenever Zara smiled at Ethan, Adrian felt something sharp twist inside his chest.

He never showed it.

Years of training had taught him how to control his expression.

How to smile when expected.

How to remain calm even when he wasn’t.

So he watched.

And stayed silent.

As always.

One evening, the three of them sat near the small lake not far from the Laurent estate.

The sun was beginning to disappear behind the trees.

Zara rested her head against Ethan’s shoulder while Ethan absentmindedly played with her fingers.

Adrian sat across from them.

Quiet.

Listening.

Pretending nothing was wrong.

“You know,” Zara suddenly said, “one day we’ll all look back at moments like this and miss them.”

Ethan laughed.

“Speak for yourself. I’m going to become ridiculously successful.”

“You already think you’re ridiculously successful.”

“I am.”

Zara rolled her eyes.

Adrian smiled faintly.

The moment looked perfect.

It felt perfect.

Yet for some reason, he couldn’t get rid of the feeling that something was about to change.

And he was right.

Because a few months later, Zara showed up at his door in tears.

It was the first time Adrian had ever seen her completely broken.

The moment he opened the door, he knew something was wrong.

Her eyes were swollen.

Her hands trembled.

Mascara stained her cheeks.

“Zara?”

She tried speaking.

No words came out.

Without thinking, Adrian stepped aside and let her in.

The moment she entered, she collapsed onto the couch.

For some minutes, she simply cried.

Adrian sat beside her.

Helpless.

Watching.

Waiting.

Finally, she spoke.

“I’m pregnant.”

The words seemed to stop time.

Adrian stared at her.

Not because he didn’t understand.

But because he did.

Perfectly.

A hundred thoughts rushed through his mind.

None of them mattered.

Only Zara did.

“What happened?” he asked softly.

Zara laughed bitterly.

“What do you think happened?”

Adrian lowered his gaze.

She wiped her face.

“I haven’t told my parents.”

His stomach tightened.

The Laurent family was one of the most influential political families in France.

Public image meant everything.

Scandal wasn’t tolerated.

Especially not one involving their daughter.

“Does Ethan know?”

She nodded.

The hesitation before her answer worried him.

“How did he react?”

For a moment, Zara looked away.

And somehow that hurt Adrian more than her tears.

“He says he’ll figure something out.”

Something about the way she said it sounded wrong.

As though she didn’t believe it herself.

And unfortunately, neither did Adrian.

Over the following weeks, everything began falling apart.

The pregnancy didn’t remain secret for long.

Someone found out.

Then someone else.

Eventually, her parents found out the truth.

The fallout was spontaneous.

Explosive.

The once cheerful Zara seemed to disappear overnight.

Phone calls became less frequent.

Messages went unanswered.

Family security became stricter.

Appearances became controlled.

And every time Adrian managed to see her, she looked more exhausted than before.

Then came the worst part.

The pressure.

Her parents weren’t interested in solutions.

They were interested in damage control.

Their reputation.

Their future elections.

Their public image.

The child was treated like a problem that needed to disappear.

Zara fought.

At first.

But she was young.

Scared.

Alone.

And increasingly overwhelmed.

During one of their not so common meetings, Adrian finally asked the question he had been avoiding.

“Where’s Ethan?”

Silence.

Zara looked down.

That was all the answer he needed.

Something cold settled inside him.

Not hatred.

Not yet.

Disappointment.

Ethan hadn’t vanished completely.

He still called.

Still texted.

Still promised things would improve.

But when Zara needed someone physically beside her…

He wasn’t there.

When difficult conversations happened…

He wasn’t there.

When her world started collapsing…

He wasn’t there.

And every absence became impossible for Adrian to ignore.

The final decision came months later.

One Adrian would remember for the rest of his life.

The pregnancy was terminated.

Not because Zara wanted it.

But because she had been cornered from every direction.

The day it happened, Adrian sat alone in his room for hours.

Staring at nothing.

Unable to concentrate.

Unable to read.

Unable to think about anything else.

A life had ended.

A future had disappeared.

And everyone was pretending it was simply another problem solved.

Weeks passed.

Then months.

The relationship between Ethan and Zara slowly crumbled.

Too much pain existed between them.

Too many things remained unsaid.

Eventually, they separated.

Quietly.

Without drama.

Without closure.

Adrian expected relief.

Instead, he felt angry.

Angrier than he had ever been in his life.

Not because Ethan and Zara had broken up.

Because of everything that happened before it.

The fear.

The loneliness.

The helplessness.

The way Zara had suffered while everyone else protected themselves.

One evening, Ethan appeared outside the Wolfe estate.

For the first time in months, the cousins stood alone together.

Neither spoke immediately.

The silence stretched between them.

Finally, Ethan sighed.

“I know what you’re thinking.”

Adrian looked at him.

“No, you don’t.”

“Adrian—”

“You weren’t there.”

The words escaped before he could stop them.

Ethan froze.

“You don’t know everything.”

“Then tell me.”

Silence.

The same silence Adrian hated.

The same silence that always seemed to arrive when truth was required.

Ethan rubbed a hand across his face.

“I was scared.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“So was she.”

Neither spoke again.

There was nothing left to say.

Because no explanation could change what had happened.

No apology could undo it.

That conversation marked the beginning of the distance between them.

The friendship survived.

But something important had broken.

And neither of them knew how to fix it.

Years later, Adrian would build one of the most successful corporate empires in the world.

People would describe him as disciplined.

Controlled.

Unshakable.

They would admire his composure.

His professionalism.

His ability to remain calm under pressure.

What they didn’t know was that those qualities weren’t strengths.

They were defenses.

Every wall Adrian built could be traced back to one lesson.

Love made people vulnerable.

Vulnerability led to pain.

And pain changed everything.

By the age of thirty, Adrian Wolfe had mastered the art of protecting himself.

The boy who once sat quietly beside Zara had disappeared.

In his place stood a man who trusted strategy more than emotions.

Logic more than feelings.

Control more than love.

And he would have continued living that way…

If Elena Hart had never walked into Wolfe Global.

Rain hammered against the glass entrance of Wolfe Global with such force that the city beyond it looked almost unreal.Water flowed down the windows in silver streams, covering the lights of passing cars and turning Manhattan into a blur of color.Elena stood beneath the covered entrance, phone in hand. She refreshed the rideshare app for the fourth time.No drivers available. She tried another. The estimated wait climbed from twenty-three minutes to forty-seven.She sighed quietly.“Not your night?”The receptionist smiled sympathetically.“It’ll clear eventually.”“I hope so.”She wasn’t worried about getting wet.She was worried about getting home. Her mother always tried to stay awake until she walked through the door.No matter how many times Elena asked her not to.Across the driveway, the black sedan remained where it was.Its headlights reflected across the wet pavement. The engine continued to idle.Inside, Adrian sat in the back seat, reading through tomorrow’s presentation.

  • Owned by the Man I Rejected    CHAPTER 26: Working Late

By Thursday morning, Wolfe Global had settled into a rhythm that only appeared calm from the outside.Inside, every department was racing against Friday’s investor presentation.Phones rang almost constantly.Meeting rooms remained occupied.Assistants hurried through the executive floor with folders tucked beneath their arms, while managers revised reports for what felt like the tenth time.No one wanted to be responsible for a mistake.Especially with Richard Wolfe personally overseeing preparations.Elena had barely finished her first cup of coffee when Maya appeared beside her desk.“You’ve been summoned.”Elena looked up from her laptop.“That sounds ominous.”“It probably is.”Maya lowered her voice.“Lawson Capital just confirmed they’ll be here in an hour.”“I thought tomorrow was the presentation.”“It is.”“This is something else.”Before Elena could ask another question, the phone on her desk rang.“Miss Hart,” the receptionist said. “Mr. Wolfe would like you in the executi

  • Owned by the Man I Rejected    CHAPTER 25 – A Choice He Doesn’t Understand

The Wolfe family estate looked different after sunset. The limestone façade glowed beneath carefully placed garden lights, while the wide driveway curved around a fountain that had stood there long before Adrian and Ethan were born. For Richard Wolfe, family dinners were not optional. No matter how demanding business became, Wednesday evenings belonged to family.Adrian arrived precisely at seven.Naturally.Ethan pulled into the driveway four minutes later. Also naturally. He climbed out of his car carrying a bottle of wine.“You know Uncle Richard doesn’t drink red.”“I know.”“Then why—”“It’s for Emily.”Adrian shook his head.“You’ve planned this.”“I always plan my survival.”Emily Wolfe greeted them at the front door before either man reached it.“There you are.”She embraced Ethan first.“My favorite nephew.”“I’m your only nephew.”“Exactly.”She smiled before turning to Adrian.“And my impossible son.”“I’ve been called worse.”“I’m aware.”She adjusted the collar of his jac

Even the café downstairs had a line of people waiting all to the elevators.Pressure had settled over the building. Not the chaotic kind. The disciplined kind. The sort that came before something important.Elena fixed the strap of her laptop bag as she stepped out of the elevator onto the executive floor.“Morning.”Maya appeared beside her carrying two coffees.“I bought you one before you could pretend breakfast isn’t necessary.”Elena accepted the cup with a grateful smile.“One day you’ll stop treating me like a project.”“I sincerely hope not.”They reached Elena’s desk together.Maya lowered her voice.“Richard Wolfe is sitting in on today’s rehearsal.”Elena paused
