By the time my driver dropped me off that night, I already felt drained. The party, the lights, the cameras, it was all noise I’d mastered pretending to enjoy. But what I hadn’t prepared for was him.

And of course, the universe wasn’t done punishing me yet.

Because as soon as we pulled up outside my building, I saw it. A black car parked across the street. Not the kind that usually sat around here, either. This one was sleek, polished, expensive car belonging to someone who didn’t wait for things, but for people.

And I knew instantly who it was.

My driver turned to me, concern in his eyes. “Do you want me to check?”

I shook my head. My lips felt heavy when I answered, “No. I know who it is.”

I stepped out of the car, heels tapping against the pavement. My gown dragged slightly, the kind of outfit that looked perfect under flashing lights but ridiculous in the quiet night air. My eyes didn’t move from the car across the street.

The door opened.

And there he was.

He stepped out like he was the main act of the night. Dark suit, tie undone, looking effortlessly in control. His presence filled the space, like it always did.... loud without making a sound.

“Cariño,” he said, his voice low, smooth. He said it like he owned the word, like it was meant for no one else but me.

I crossed my arms, leaning against my car door. “What do you want?” and "why are you here?"

He smirked. That lazy, infuriating smirk that used to melt me once upon a time. “Straight to business. I like that.”

“I’m not here to play games,” I told him, my voice sharper than I felt. “So unless you came to apologize”

“Apologize?” He almost laughed, shaking his head. “Cariño, I gave you the spotlight tonight. You should be thanking me.”

My laugh was short and bitter. “Thanking you? For stealing my words? For using me as some dramatic stunt just to get people talking? Congratulations. You did it. They’re all talking about you again. Same old story.”

But he wasn’t bothered. Not even a little. His smirk deepened. “They’re not just talking about me.” His eyes traveled over me, slow, deliberate, heavy enough to make my skin prickle. “They’re talking about us.”

My chest tightened. I hated the way he said “us.” Like we were still a brand. Like the years I spent rebuilding myself meant nothing.

“There is no us,” I said, steady but low.

He tilted his head, studying me like I was a puzzle only he could solve. Then, softly, “Maybe not in your head. But out there?” He nodded toward the city lights. “They want it. And what they want, cariño… we'll give them.”

That word again. Cariño. Sweetness on his tongue, poison in mine.

“You’re unbelievable,” I whispered, shaking my head. “You want to drag me back into your circus just so you can shine again? That’s your big plan?”

“No.” He stepped closer, and I could smell his cologne, dark and familiar. His voice dropped lower. “I don’t want to shine again. I want to burn. And I want you beside me when I do.”

The audacity nearly stole my breath.

I stared at him, trying to find the right words. “You don’t get to want me. Not after what you did.”

He leaned in, close enough that I felt the weight of his stare. “Oh, cariño, I’ve always wanted you. That hasn’t changed. The only thing that’s changed is you. You’re stronger now. Fiercer. And that only makes me want you more.”

I forced a laugh, though it cracked. “You think that’s a compliment? You think I’m flattered?”

His lips curved, deliberate. “No. I think you’re scared.”

And there it was. The dagger. Because deep down, he wasn’t wrong. I was scared. Scared of him, of myself, of the memories he dragged back with just one look. Scared that a part of me still remembered how good it felt to be wanted by him, before everything shattered.

But I wasn’t going to give him that satisfaction.

“You don’t scare me,” I said firmly. “Not anymore.”

He watched me quietly, his smirk softening into something darker. “Good. Because I don’t want you scared. I want you on stage.”

I blinked. “Excuse me?”

“There’s a showcase next month,” he said smoothly. “The biggest of the year. Labels, producers, press, everyone will be there. I want you beside me. Just like old times.”

I almost laughed, but there was nothing funny about it. “You’re insane.”

“Maybe,” he admitted. His smirk returned, slower this time. “But you and I both know what would happen if we performed together again. The world wouldn’t just watc, they’d lose their minds. You and me? We’d be unstoppable.”

“Unstoppable?” I repeated, shaking my head. “Or trapped? Because you don’t share the spotlight. You swallow it.”

For the first time, his smirk slipped. His eyes hardened, his voice steady but sharp.

“You’re wrong. I don’t want to steal your light. I want to own it.”

The words landed like a punch. My throat tightened, rage and disbelief boiling together.

I turned away, yanking the car door open. “Go to hell.”

Behind me, his voice followed, low and calm, like a warning. “I’ll see you on that stage, cariño. Whether you’re ready or not.”

The door slammed, cutting him off. My driver pulled us away, but I couldn’t stop myself from looking back through the mirror.

He stood there in the street, hands in his pockets, watching me leave like he already knew I’d come back.

And that was what scared me most.

Because I wasn’t sure if I hated him more for saying it, or myself for feeling that dangerous pull again.

  • Owned by the man I hated   Chapter 17 - Behind his eyes

The kiss haunted him.Even now, hours later, Alejandro de la Vega sat in his study, untouched glass of whiskey on the table before him, staring into the shadows as though they held answers he couldn’t reach. But all he saw was her. The way her lips had trembled against his. The way she had leaned into him, just a fraction, like instinct had betrayed the walls she kept up.Mariana Cariño.Even her name was a curse on his tongue. Sweet, sharp, dangerous. It had rolled from his lips that night like it belonged to him, and he hated himself for wanting to keep it that way.He rubbed his temple with one hand, the other clenched tightly around the armrest. He was supposed to be stronger than this. His father had trained him for it..... trained him to control his emotions, to bury his softness under steel. And he had done it well. Until now.Her kiss had undone him.He remembered the boy he had once been.Seventeen, foolish, still writing songs late at night with a cheap guitar propped agains

  • Owned by the man I hated   Chapter 16 - The weight of yesterday

Mariana hadn’t realized she was holding her breath until the silence pressed so heavily against her chest that it hurt. Alejandro’s confession still lingered in the air, raw and unpolished, like a wound torn open for the first time.“I never wanted her,” he said, his voice low, threaded with a pain that made her heart tremble. “Luciana was not a choice. She was… a chain.”Mariana’s fingers curled against the armrest of the chair, knuckles pale. Every instinct screamed at her to push him further, to demand every hidden truth at once. And yet, another part of her.... smaller, weaker, but frighteningly alive still feared what she might uncover if she pressed too hard.Alejandro moved to the window, shadows wrapping around his tall frame as though they knew the darkness he carried. He didn’t look at her when he spoke again.“I was young, reckless. I thought I could build something of my own. But power… power is never given freely. It always demands blood or sacrifice.”Mariana’s chest tig

The silence after Luciana’s words was deafening.Mariana swore she could hear her own heartbeat drumming in her ears, wild and uneven, as if her chest had become too small to contain it. Her name..... "Mariana Cariño" still lingered in the air, bitter and sweet all at once, because Luciana had thrown it like a knife.Darling. That was what Luciana had called him. Not Alejandro, not de la Vega, not Señor anything. Just… darling. And the way she had said it, familiar and smooth, like it had belonged to her once and maybe still did, made Mariana’s stomach twist in knots.Alejandro hadn’t answered immediately. His jaw had tensed, his fists had curled, but his eyes… his eyes had betrayed something soft. Something dangerous. Something Mariana couldn’t unsee.Luciana’s perfume still lingered in the air, wrapping itself around every breath, thick and suffocating. It wasn’t just perfume. It was a statement. A reminder. A warning.Mariana wanted to scream, to demand answers, to rip away every v

The echo of his lips still burned on hers.Mariana lay in her bed that night, staring at the ceiling as though it could give her answers. The sheets were tangled around her legs, her heart refusing to calm. She pressed her fingers to her mouth, remembering how Alejandro had kissed her. Hesitant at first, then demanding, like a man fighting his own restraint. It was everything she had sworn not to want. Yet her body betrayed her, still trembling at the memory.Fool, she scolded herself, her throat tight. You didn’t come here for this. You came here to end him.But every time she repeated that truth, another surfaced. The warmth in his eyes when he whispered her name. The way he had held her as though he feared letting go. The vulnerability in him that no one else had ever seen.It was maddening, because beneath all of that tenderness was something else. Something dark. Something tied to the deal he refused to explain. Her fists curled into the sheets. “I can’t let him break me,” she wh

The silence that followed Alejandro’s vow clung to the room like smoke, heavy and suffocating. Mariana felt it in her lungs, in her bones, pressing against her chest until it hurt. He had a way of making every word sound final, like a verdict. But for once, she didn’t know if the verdict terrified her, or thrilled her.Her heart hadn’t slowed since the moment his eyes locked with hers. Dark, unrelenting, burning with truths he wasn’t ready to say out loud. And God help her, a part of her wasn’t sure she wanted to hear them, because hearing them would mean admitting how deep she already was. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Not here. Not with him. Not with the man she had sworn, sworn to take down.“Alejandro…” His name left her lips shakily, almost like a prayer. He tilted his head, the faintest smirk tugging at his mouth, but his gaze softened. “Say it again,” he murmured, voice low, hypnotic. Her brows pulled together. “What?”“My name.” His tone carried a hunger that unsettled her.

  • Owned by the man I hated   Chapter 12- Between shadows and truths

She waited for him to return but there was no sign he was going to....The night felt heavy, pressing down on Mariana as though the very air around Alejandro’s mansion was complicit in his secrets. Her heartbeat had not yet steadied since the moment she caught him murmuring into the phone, words she wasn’t supposed to hear, words about plans, deals, and Luciana’s unwanted interference. And then there was his warning: “Truths that will destroy everything you think you know about me.”How was she supposed to sleep after that? She didn’t. She stayed awake, curled against the far edge of the guest bed, staring into the darkness as her mind churned. A part of her was furious; furious at him, furious at herself for letting him so quickly wedge himself into her heart. But another part… that foolish, vulnerable part… only replayed the way his voice had softened when he said cariño, how even his threat sounded like a plea to hold on.By the time the first pale glow of morning filtered through
