MasukChapter 34
Kent’s Pov
My body moves before my brain can even catch up.
Freya takes another step closer to us, her eyes sharp like broken glass, but I immediately step right into the middle of the gap, blocking her view of Daniella completely. I stand tall, my shoulders squared, putting my entire body between Freya and the girl carrying my child.
"Kent," Freya says, her voice shaking with sudden, dangerous anger. "What is going on here? Why are you hiding her? What were you two doing out here on this dark balcony?"
"It is none of your business, Freya," I snap back. My voice is hard and cold, dropping every single polite mask I usually wear for high-society events.
Freya’s jaw drops open in pure shock. She is not used to me speaking to her this way. She glares past my shoulder, trying to look at Daniella, who is standing quietly in the shadows.
"None of my business?" Freya repeats, her voice rising in pitch. "We are engaged, Kent! My father’s money is keeping your family's business alive! I see the way you look at this little student volunteer, and I am not stupid! What did she tell you? What are you hiding from me?"
"I said enough," I warn her, taking a hard step forward. My dark eyes lock onto hers with a look so fierce she actually takes a half-step back. "Go back inside the ballroom, Freya. Leave us alone. Now."
Freya breathes heavily, her chest rising and falling beneath her silver dress. She looks between the two of us, her eyes full of burning hate and suspicion. "This isn't over, Kent," she hisses. "You will regret this."
With a sharp turn of her high heels, she storms back down the hallway, her dress rustling loudly against the marble floor until the heavy double doors swing shut behind her, cutting off the noise.
I let out a long, shaky breath and turn around immediately.
Daniella is standing against the stone railing, looking terrified and small. Her hands are shaking, and fresh tears are starting to spill down her cheeks again.
"Kent," she whispers, her voice trembling. "She knows. Even if she doesn't know everything, she knows something is wrong. She is going to tell your grandfather, and she is going to tell Gareth. Everything is going to fall apart."
"Hey. Look at me," I say, stepping close to her and taking her cold hands in mine. I squeeze them tight. "I won't let Freya touch you. I won't let my family or anyone else pressure you into anything. You are safe with me."
"Your protection is going to expose us," Daniella argues, shaking her head sadly. "Every time you look at me like this, every time you defend me, people are going to notice. You can't fight your whole family, Kent. They are too powerful."
Her words hit me like heavy bricks. She is right. I am trapped in a massive web of corporate contracts, family expectations, and billionaire pride. If I just rush into this blindly, my grandfather will destroy Daniella’s scholarship, kick her out of the university, and use his lawyers to make sure she has nowhere to run.
"I know," I murmur, my chest aching as I look down into her face. "I need time, Daniella. I need to figure out how to break this engagement, handle the pregnancy, and protect your future all at the same time without losing everything."
Daniella looks up at me, her big eyes searching my face with doubt. "Break the engagement? Kent, your grandfather told you what happens if you break the contract. You lose your inheritance. You lose your job. You lose your whole life."
For the very first time since my family handed me those papers to sign, I don't care about the money. I don't care about the fancy title or the big house. Standing here on the cold balcony with the mother of my child, the wealth of my family feels like garbage compared to what we have right here.
"Then I'll lose it," I say quietly, but with total, absolute certainty. "I'll walk away from all of it if it means keeping you and our baby safe."
Daniella goes quiet. She stares at me like she can't believe the words coming out of my mouth.
"Tell me the truth, Kent," she whispers, her voice barely louder than the night wind. "What do you actually want from me? Are you just doing this because of the baby? Are you just trying to be honorable because it's your child?"
Her question hangs in the cold air, heavy and sharp. She expects me to say I will provide money, or get her an apartment, or offer protection out of guilt. She expects me to treat this like a business deal, just like my family treats everything else.
I gently lift my hand, resting my fingers softly against her warm cheek. I lean in close so she can see every piece of truth in my eyes.
"I don't want to just be honorable, Daniella," I tell her, my voice thick with emotion. "I didn't fall in love with you because you're the mother of my child. I fell in love with you long before I knew about the baby. I want you to choose me not because you have to, but because you want me."
Daniella’s breath catches. A tiny, watery smile breaks through her tears. "And what if I do choose you?"
"Then I choose you back," I answer immediately, without a single second of hesitation. "I already know who I want, Daniella. I want you. More than the money, more than the company, more than this stupid engagement."
She lets out a shaky breath, leaning her face slightly into the warmth of my hand. "How are we going to do this, Kent? Your family will never accept me. Freya will never let you go."
I drop my hand slowly, letting out a heavy, tired sigh as I look out over the dark gardens. The harsh reality of our situation rushes back in, cold and sharp.
"I don't know," I confess honestly, running a hand through my hair. "I have no idea how to make my family accept my choice. But we will figure it out together. One step at a time."

I don't want a stage, I don't want cameras flashing red dots, and I don't want high-society wives whispering over champagne flutes. I want quiet, private, and real.Next morning, Kent acts weird. He checks his phone twice while making coffee. He taps his screen with a tight, focused thumb, then slips it into his pocket fast when I walk into the kitchen.Old instincts twitch. Is Robert pulling another supply line? Did Dean Holloway reopen the review?I catch myself. I am not living in paranoia mode anymore. I lean against the fridge, sipping black coffee, and watch him zip a small leather folio bag."You're acting like a spy trading secrets in a alley, Vance," I tease, raising an eyebrow.Kent pauses, turning around with a slow, faint smirk touching his mouth. Her expression is granite-tight—not hostile, just heavy with institutional gravity."Dr. Vance," Holloway says, looking between us. "Miss Vance is cleared of the extortion conspiracy trace. Her roster stands." She turns her sharp gaze to me. "The board review regarding your faculty standing remains active. We cannot have a direct instructor-student dynamic in upp
Chapter Sixty ThreeDaniella’s PovTears blur my vision, warm and clean, as Kent pulls me up from the porch boards and into a tight, hard embrace that feels like safety carved out of stone."I believe you," I whisper against his shoulder, my voice cracking with honesty. "I don't doubt your heart, Kent. Not anymore."We sit back down on the weathered porch bench, the ocean roaring low in the dark. My fingers touch the silver chain and white jade resting on my wrist. I look up at him, moonlight cutting silver across his sharp jaw."How we started still messes with my head sometimes," I admit quietly, staring at the grain of the wood. "A setup office, a blackmailer in the dark, a cold professor who didn't want messy feelings, and a baby making choices for us before we even knew how to talk."Kent covers my hand with his big, heavy palm. His eyes are dark, deep, and steady. "The start was a wreck, Daniella. I won't lie about that. My grandfather built a cage, Gareth set a trap, and I walk
Chapter Sixty TwoDaniella’s PovMorning light hits the cheap kitchen blinds, and I lay the cold truth out on the table like open blueprints."Zero trusts," I tell Daniella, tracing a finger across a pad of yellow legal paper. "Gone. The family real estate portfolio in the valley—revoked access codes. The sovereign equity line through grandfather’s syndicate—locked out. Dividend distribution rights from the baseline parent trust—terminated."I look up, waiting for her shoulders to drop. Waiting for the realization that she chained herself to a sinking ship.Daniella sits cross-legged on the chair, sipping black coffee, her dark eyes steady and unblinking. "What’s left in your name alone?""My independent stock portfolio from pre-venture advisory advisory fees, two hundred thousand in liquid cash sitting in a clean credit union account, and Vance Advisory Group intellectual property rights," I say, laying out the exact math. "It’s enough to cover payroll, office rent for six months, an

The tiredness on his face turns into hard stone. "What did she say?""She said you sat with Robert. She said there's a paper copy sitting in your briefing folder right now tying my enrollment audit clearance to your wire release." I cross my arms, forcing my legs steady. "Tell me straight, Kent. Did Robert put an exit clause with my name on it?"Kent stares at me for two long seconds. Then he lets out a heavy, ragged breath, running a hand down his face. He walks past the kitchen island, dropping his heavy leather portfolio onto the table with a dull thud. He flips the brass latches, pulls out a single thick sheaf of cream legal paper,

I look at Kent standing tall in his dark jacket, ready to walk into a shadow trap for four million dollars of bridge liquidity. My throat tightens.
