Chapter 35

Daniella’s Pov

My front door slams shut, and the heavy weight of the entire world crashes down on my shoulders all at once.

I slide down the wooden wall of the hallway until I am sitting flat on the floor, pulling my knees up against my chest. My mind spins so fast I feel sick. Kent’s words from the gala balcony—I want you, more than the money, more than the company—echo over and over inside my head.

He loves me. Or at least, he says he does.

Instead of feeling safe and happy, a cold wave of pure terror freezes my blood. A billionaire family like Kent’s does not just let go of their billion-dollar merger because the son falls in love with a poor student on a scholarship. If his grandfather finds out about us—and about our baby—they will crush me like a bug. They will use their lawyers, their power, and their money to tear my life into tiny pieces.

"Daniella?"

Footsteps echo softly down the hall, and my mother walks into view. She looks down at me, her tired face full of deep worry. She kneels beside me on the floor, gently wrapping her arms around my shaking shoulders.

"Oh, sweetie," my mother whispers softly, rubbing my back. "You look like you've been carrying a mountain all night. What is wrong? Is it that boy, Gareth? Or is it someone else?"

I bury my face in my mother’s shoulder and let the hot tears fall. I don't tell her everything—I can't tell her about Kent, about the penthouse, or about the dangerous world he lives in. But I cry until my chest hurts.

My mother strokes my hair gently. "Listen to me, Daniella. I don't care who he is, and I don't care how much money or power his family has. You need to stop worrying about what wealthy people demand from you. Think about what you want. Your happiness is worth more than all the gold in the world."

Her words stay with me all night, but morning brings a harsh and painful reality.

When I wake up, the morning sickness hits me ten times worse than before. I spend twenty minutes kneeling over the toilet, throwing up until my stomach feels completely empty and my head swims. Looking in the bathroom mirror afterward, I pull my shirt tight against my waist. My stomach is starting to round out just a tiny bit. It is slow, but it is happening. Very soon, nobody will be able to hide it. Not even me.

By the time I walk onto the university campus later that morning, the air feels heavy and suffocating.

The gossip mill has already started turning. As I walk past the main library steps, I hear two girls whispering loudly behind their books. They talk about Kent. They talk about how the cold, strict professor looked at the gala, how he protected a student, and how angry Freya looked when she stormed away. People are starting to connect the dots.

Panic spikes in my chest. If students are talking, it won't take long for Gareth to hear the rumors. And it won't take long for Kent’s powerful family to start asking dangerous questions.

I decide right then and there: I have to stay away from him.

For the next two days, I become a ghost. I skip my regular shortcut hallways. I sit in the very back row of every lecture hall. Whenever I see Kent walking down the corridor, I turn around and run in the opposite direction. I tell myself I am protecting him. I am saving his career, his job, and his future from being destroyed by a scandal with me.

It works for forty-eight hours.

Then, on Thursday afternoon, my luck runs out completely.

I finish my literature lecture and pack my bag in record time, turning toward the back exit. Before my hand can even touch the metal door handle, a strong, firm hand catches my wrist.

I am pulled smoothly into an empty, sunlit supply closet just off the main hall, and the door clicks shut behind us.

I turn around, ready to fight, but the words die in my throat.

Kent is standing right in front of me. His tall frame blocks the door. His dark suit jacket is slightly wrinkled, and his dark eyes look tired, frustrated, and fiercely determined.

"Why are you running from me?" Kent demands, his voice low and sharp.

"I'm not running," I lie instantly, keeping my eyes fixed on the buttons of his shirt.

"Don't lie to me, Daniella," he says, stepping closer until I have nowhere left to go. "You've been dodging me all week. You switch seats in class, you avoid the hallways, and every time you see me coming, you look like a deer caught in headlights. Do you really think running away is going to solve anything?"

"Yes!" I snap back, the stress and fear finally boiling over into anger. I look up, my eyes burning with hot tears. "It solves everything, Kent! People are talking! Students are whispering about us! If your family or Freya finds out—if Gareth finds out—everything blows up! You have a career! You have a whole life built around your family's expectations! You are only protecting me right now because I am carrying your child!"

The moment the words leave my mouth, the tiny room goes dead silent.

Kent freezes. His jaw tightens, and the angry frustration in his dark eyes instantly shifts into something deep, raw, and painful. He doesn't yell. He doesn't step back.

Instead, he reaches out. His warm, gentle hands cup both sides of my face, his thumbs softly tracing my cheekbones, holding me still so I have no choice but to look right into his eyes.

"Look at me, Daniella," Kent whispers, his voice thick with absolute conviction. "Listen to me very carefully. If there were no baby... if you were never pregnant at all... I would still want you in my life."

My breath catches sharply in my throat. The walls I built around my heart crack right down the middle.

"Every single day," Kent continues, his voice dropping to a low, desperate plea, "all I think about is you. Not the contract. Not my family. Not what anyone else expects of me. Just you."

My hands come up, resting flat against the front of his crisp white shirt. I can feel the fast, heavy beating of his heart against my palms. All my logical thoughts, all my fears about his billionaire family, and all my clever plans to stay away from him completely vanish into thin air.

I can't fight it anymore. I am too tired, too in love, and too desperate to keep pretending.

Before my brain can tell me to stop, I stand up on my tiptoes, lean forward, and press my lips straight against his.

Chapter 34 Kent’s Pov My body moves before my brain can even catch up. Freya takes another step closer to us, her eyes sharp like broken glass, but I immediately step right into the middle of the gap, blocking her view of Daniella completely. I stand tall, my shoulders squared, putting my entire body between Freya and the girl carrying my child. "Kent," Freya says, her voice shaking with sudden, dangerous anger. "What is going on here? Why are you hiding her? What were you two doing out here on this dark balcony?" "It is none of your business, Freya," I snap back. My voice is hard and cold, dropping every single polite mask I usually wear for high-society events. Freya’s jaw drops open in pure shock. She is not used to me speaking to her this way. She glares past my shoulder, trying to look at Daniella, who is standing quietly in the shadows. "None of my business?" Freya repeats, her voice rising in pitch. "We are engaged, Kent! My father’s money is keeping your family's busine

Chapter 33 Daniella’s Pov My breath catches in my throat as I wait for Kent to speak, terrified that his silence means he is angry, or worse, that he regrets ever looking at me. "Say it again," Kent whispers. His voice is very quiet, almost like he is afraid the wind will blow the words away. He looks down at me, his dark eyes wide and fixed on my face. "Tell me again, Daniella." "The baby is yours," I repeat, my voice trembling so hard the words barely come out. "It's yours, Kent. From that night at the penthouse." Kent stays completely still. For a long, painful second, he does not move a single muscle. I watch the shock wash over his face, turning his pale skin even paler as his mind tries to catch up with the truth. Then, a heavy breath rushes out of his lungs. "Mine," he says, testing the word like it is something fragile and precious he has never held before. A frown touches his brow as he looks at me. "Why didn't you tell me sooner, Daniella? Why did you keep this a secre

Chapter 32 Kent’s Pov My legs feel like heavy lead as I walk back through the heavy double doors and step back into the blinding lights of the grand ballroom. The loud music and happy laughter of high-society people sound like a buzzing noise far away in my ears. Daniella’s words echo over and over inside my head, loud and clear, shaking my entire world upside down. I'm pregnant. She said she was pregnant. But she never finished the sentence. She never said who the father was before Freya’s voice interrupted us and she ran away. Yet, as I stand there on the raised stage beside Freya, my mind races a million miles a minute. I count back the days. I think about the rainy night at the penthouse. I think about the way our bodies fit together in the dark, the way we crossed a line we could never uncross. The math hits me like a sudden punch to my chest. Could it be mine? Freya squeezes my arm tightly, flashing a brilliant, fake smile at the crowded room as the photographer’s camera

Chapter 31 Daniella’s Pov The bright lights of the grand ballroom hurt my eyes as I walk through the heavy double doors in my black and white volunteer uniform. I carry a heavy tray filled with glasses of expensive champagne, my hands shaking so badly the glass rims clink against each other. When the head coordinator assigned our student team to help at this high-society gala tonight, I did not know it was Kent’s family event. If I had known, I would have locked myself in my bedroom and never come out. Now, I am trapped right in the middle of it. I keep my head down, staring at the polished marble floor, trying to blend into the background. But then I look up across the crowded room, and my breath catches completely in my throat. Kent is standing near the raised stage. He is wearing a sharp, expensive black tuxedo that fits his tall frame perfectly, making him look like a prince from a tragic story. And standing right beside him, holding tightly onto his arm like she owns him, i
