LOGINChapter Fifty Two
Kent’s Pov
I sat there watching Freya stand up like she owned the whole room. My heart slammed hard against my ribs. Daniella’s face went white next to me. I knew whatever came next would hit us both.
Freya’s voice cut through the silence. “I have proof that changes everything.”
The committee head leaned forward. “Speak.”
Freya pulled a phone from her bag. She held it up so everyone could see the screen. “These are messages. Screenshots. Dates. Times. All of it.”
I felt the blood drain from my face. I remembered those nights. The ones before I knew she was my student. The ones after I found out she was pregnant.
Freya started reading out loud.
“Kent, I need you tonight.” “Come to my place. Don’t tell anyone.” “I can’t stop thinking about what we did.”Each line hit like a punch. Daniella’s hands shook under the table. I wanted to reach for her but I stayed still. One wrong move and this got worse.
The committee members traded looks. One of them, a woman with sharp glasses, spoke. “Professor Kent, do these messages belong to you?”
I nodded once. “Yes.”
“And you continued contact after learning Miss Rivera was your student?”
“Yes.”
Freya smiled like she had won. “He knew. He kept going. He even helped her with assignments after the pregnancy test.”
Daniella’s voice cracked. “That’s not true. He never—”
I cut in before she could dig herself deeper. “I never changed a single grade. I never gave her extra points. Her work stood on its own.”
The man at the end of the table frowned. “Yet you admit personal feelings clouded your judgment.”
“I do. I cared about her. I still do. But I did not favor her in class.”
Freya laughed. It was cold. “He paid for her doctor visits. He drove her to the clinic. He bought the prenatal vitamins. That is favoritism.”
The room went quiet. I could hear Daniella’s fast breathing. I turned my head just enough to meet her eyes. She looked scared. I mouthed one word. Stay calm.
The committee head raised a hand. “We need the full context. Miss Rivera, when did you first learn Professor Kent was assigned to your course?”
Daniella’s voice was small. “The first day of class. I walked in and saw him at the front. I almost left.”
“Yet you stayed.”
“I needed the credits. I needed to graduate.”
Freya jumped in again. “She stayed because she already had him. She used the baby as leverage.”
I stood up so fast my chair scraped the floor. “Stop. Right now.”
Every head turned to me.
“She never used the baby. She never asked me for a single grade. I offered the rides and the vitamins because I was the one who put her in that position. I took responsibility. That is all.”
Freya’s eyes narrowed. “You took responsibility in private. In public you acted like nothing happened.”
The glasses woman spoke again. “Professor, did you disclose the relationship to the department once you learned she was pregnant?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because I was a coward. I thought I could handle it alone. I was wrong.”
Daniella’s hand found mine under the table. Her fingers were ice cold. I squeezed once and let go.
Freya held up another paper. “This is a record from the clinic. Kent signed as the emergency contact. He listed himself as the father. He paid the bill in cash so it would not show on university insurance.”
The committee head looked at me. “Is that accurate?”
“Yes.”
“And you still claim no favoritism occurred in the classroom?”
“Yes. Check her papers. Check her exams. Every mark is hers.”
One of the men flipped through a folder. “We already did. Her scores are consistent with previous terms. No sudden jumps.”
Freya’s smile slipped for the first time. “That does not erase the affair.”
I looked straight at her. “No. It does not. I broke the rules. I own that. But Daniella did not chase grades. She did not chase money. She chased a future that got complicated the night we met.”
The room stayed silent for three long seconds.
Then the committee head closed the folder. “We have enough for now. We will review every document, every message, every grade. A decision will be issued within forty-eight hours.”
Freya’s voice rose. “You cannot ignore this. He is still teaching. She is still in his class.”
“Miss Torres, sit down. The process will be followed.”
Freya stayed standing. Her cheeks burned red. “You are protecting him because he is tenured.”
“Sit. Down.”
She sat. Slowly.
I stayed on my feet. “I request an immediate leave from teaching duties until the decision is final. I will not set foot in that classroom again until this is settled.”
The head nodded. “Granted. Effective immediately.”
Daniella’s eyes filled. I could see she wanted to speak but she bit her lip hard.
The head continued. “Miss Rivera, you will be reassigned to another section for the remainder of the term. Your current grades will stand pending final review.”
She whispered, “Thank you.”
Freya stood one more time. “I have one last thing.”
Everyone waited.
She pulled a small envelope from her bag and slid it across the table. “This is a statement from another student. She saw them together off campus after the pregnancy was known. She is willing to testify.”
The head picked up the envelope but did not open it. “It will be added to the file.”
I felt the floor tilt under my feet. Another witness. Another nail.
Daniella’s voice finally broke free. “Kent never forced me. I chose every step. I am not a victim.”
The glasses woman looked at her. “No one is calling you a victim yet. We are determining policy violations.”
I sat back down. My legs felt weak. The meeting was ending but the damage was already done.
The head stood. “This session is closed. You will be notified of the outcome. Do not discuss these proceedings outside this room.”
Chairs scraped. Papers shuffled. Freya walked past us without a word. Her perfume lingered like a threat.
Daniella and I stayed seated until the last person left. The door clicked shut.
She turned to me. Tears ran down her cheeks but her voice was steady. “You did not throw me under the bus.”
“I never would.”
“They are going to fire you.”
“Maybe.”
“I am so sorry.”
I shook my head. “I made the choices. You did not force me into your bed. I walked there myself.”
She wiped her face with the back of her hand. “What happens now?”
“We wait. And we stay quiet. No more messages. No more late-night talks. Nothing that can be twisted.”
She nodded. “Okay.”
I stood and offered my hand. She took it. We walked out of the room side by side but not touching once the hallway lights hit us.
Outside the building the air was cold. Students moved past us like nothing in the world had changed. I watched Daniella pull her coat tighter.
“Go home,” I said. “Rest. Eat something.”
“Will you call me?”
“Not tonight. Not until this is over.”
She looked like she wanted to argue. Then she just nodded and walked away. I watched her until she disappeared around the corner.
I stayed on the steps for a long time. My phone buzzed in my pocket. A message from the department chair. Meeting tomorrow morning. Bring counsel if you have one.
I put the phone away without answering.
Freya’s last envelope sat in that room like a loaded gun. Whatever was inside would come out soon. I had no more secrets left to hide. Only the truth. And the truth was simple.
I fell for my student before I knew she was my student. I stayed when I should have walked away. And now the whole university was about to decide what that meant for both of us.
I walked to my car alone. The parking lot lights hummed above me. I started the engine and drove home in silence.

"A setup office, a blackmailer in the dark, a cold professor who didn't want messy feelings, and a baby making choices for us before we even knew how to talk."Kent covers my hand with his big, heavy palm. His eyes are dark, deep, and steady. "The start was a wreck, Daniella. I won't lie about that. My grandfather built a cage, Gareth set a trap, and I walk

Dividend distribution rights from the baseline parent trust—terminated."I look up, waiting for her shoulders to drop. She said there's a paper copy sitting in your briefing folder right now tying my enrollment audit clearance to your wire release." I cross my arms, forcing my legs steady. "Tell me straight, Kent. Did Robert put an exit clause with my name on it?"Kent stares at me for two long seconds. Then he lets out a heavy, ragged breath, running a hand down his face. He walks past the kitchen island, dropping his heavy leather portfolio onto the table with a dull thud. He flips the brass latches, pulls out a single thick sheaf of cream legal paper,
