GIDEON'S POV

The next morning, Seraphine showed up at the suite right at 7 AM. She had her materials, her notebook, and that wired look people get when they’ve stayed up half the night turning a plan over in their head until it finally feels solid enough to start.

She set up in the middle of the room like she’d done this a hundred times. Max was already on the couch, hands palm-up on his knees, the way he did now during his sessions. The light in them was low and even, almost calm.

GIDEON'S POVThe rogue alert came through at 6:15 AM on a Thursday.I’d been awake since five, staring at the ceiling in the suite with that faint golden haze from the ward pressing in from the walls. My brain wouldn’t shut off. It kept turning over the next seven days, like it was looking for an exit that wasn’t there. I had the security board open on my phone when the notification popped up, so I saw it before Liam’s text, before the campus bulletin, before anyone else even knew.Rogue incident confirmed. Research Wing east perimeter, 06:03 AM. No victim. Security patrol intercepted the approach. One rogue sighted, retreated before contact. The site shows evidence of preparation activity. Materials consistent with magical working found. Area cordoned.Research Wing east perimeter. The wall right behind the corridor, Tanya walked every single session. Forty meters from the lab where she worked. I could picture myself standing at the end of that corridor, hand flat on the fire exit do

The light in them was low and even, almost calm.Tanya and I hung back near the edges like Seraphine had told us to. We had to be in the space so the ward could read our bond, but not too close or we’d mess with the frequency. So we just stood there and watched. The whole thing took about ninety minutes. I couldn’t follow most of it. Seraphine moved around the room in these deliberate patterns, touching certain spots on the walls and floor. The air slowly turned that same soft golden color it got in the reading room, only thicker this time. Like it was si

TANYA'S POVSeraphine’s notebook had forty-three pages on the dissolution work. She’d put it together over the last ten days, ever since that mess in the library corridor. Pulled stuff from the Southern Crescent archives, the High Witch Council’s public records on banned stuff, and three sources she only called “my father’s private collection, which he does not know I photographed.” Her handwriting was tiny and tight, but somehow still easy to follow. Like she thought in straight lines, even when everything around her was falling apart. We were all in the suite again, the four of us, same as we’d been every day for the last couple of weeks. Seraphine walked us through it step by step, her voice steady but tired. The work had three stages. Preparation first: getting both signatures, setting up the space, tuning herself to the bond’s frequency. That part needed her to be around both of us a lot, for a long time. That’s why Ginna had stayed in my room for eight months. Not just the ancho

GIDEON'S POVI stayed in the library after everyone else left.Seraphine had to jump on a call with her dad’s rep about the timestamp on the testimony. Max headed out to the east quad for one of his light sessions. He’d been doing them every afternoon now, and Seraphine wanted the results logged before the binding window cracked open. Tanya had this biology reading she’d been putting off for three days straight. She told me quietly, no big production, that she was going to go knock it out because the work didn’t stop just because everything else was falling apart. So I sat there alone at the corner table with the six documents still spread out in front of me. I finally let myself do what I’d been avoiding since Tanya forwarded me the testimony link at 2:47 this morning.I looked at the whole picture of my mother. Not just the parts I already knew. Not the cold efficiency or the way she walked into rooms like she’d signed off on every inch of them. Not the charcoal suit at that dinner

TANYA'S POVWe read the message three times. The dissolution work cannot proceed without a second signature. Not the subject’s. The mate’s.She needed Gideon’s handwriting, too.She had been in the suite last night.Gideon went completely still beside me. I watched him run the whole evening back through his head, step by step, the way he does when he’s piecing together a timeline nobody else can see. What had been on the desk, who touched what, and which surfaces we’d left unguarded. I saw the exact second it clicked.“The response,” he said. “The draft I wrote by hand before we typed the final version. On the notepad on the desk.” He crossed the room, picked up the notepad, and lifted it.The top sheet was gone. Not ripped out in a hurry. Clean. The perforated edge was still perfect, like someone had taken their time. But the sheet underneath still held the faint indentations from his pen. Ghost letters. Just enough to prove what had been there.“She was in here while we were all in

GIDEON'S POV Seraphine’s call with her father had run forty-seven minutes. I knew because she walked back into the suite looking like someone who’d just finished a heavyweight round and was still trying to catch her breath without showing it. She dropped into the chair, flipped open her notebook to a blank page, and said, “He listened. All of it. Every single piece.” “And?” Tanya asked right away. “He’s filing a formal inquiry with the High Council about the Blackwood Foundation’s admin conduct at Moonstone. Specifically, the way they slipped a non-enrolled person into a student dorm room using a Foundation override. He’s calling it misuse of institutional access to pack-affiliated facilities.” Seraphine’s voice stayed even, but I could hear the weight behind it. I crossed my arms. “On what standing?” “The Southern Crescent’s territorial agreement with Moonstone gives him room to flag integrity issues that affect students in the territory. Including me, since I’m still enr

TANYA’S POVThe silence of the dorm room was heavier than any textbook I’d ever lugged across campus. I had spent the last four hours staring at the cracks in the ceiling, trying to force my brain to shut down, but sleep was a ghost I couldn't catch. Every time I closed my eyes, the darkness didn't

Tanya’s POVSunlight slipped through the gaps in my old curtains, but that wasn’t what pulled me awake. I opened my eyes and stared straight up at the ceiling. There they were, the glow-in-the-dark stars and planets I stuck up when I was eight. The edges were curling now, the glow barely there any

GIDEON’S POVThe heavy oak doors of the lecture hall creaked as I shoved them open, the sound echoing through the tiered room. Every head snapped in my direction. The air was thick with the scent of old paper, floor wax, and the nervous sweat of fifty different wolves. I didn't slow down. I didn't

TANYA’S POVThe mid-term break was supposed to be a relief. It was the first time since the semester began that the campus would actually be quiet, a reprieve from the whispers, the glares, and the suffocating pressure of being the "Omega" everyone was afraid of. The hallways were already buzzing w
