Chapter 2

Author: Treat Me
As Ruby spoke, she glanced in the back. "That sickly thing didn't bother you, did she?"

Putting away the cigarettes with practiced ease, Gary smiled ingratiatingly. "Of course not! With direct orders from you, how can I possibly let her in? I just told her the minibus broke down and chased her out. With all that coughing she makes on board, the other parents will definitely complain, won't they?"

Ruby nodded in satisfaction. "Good. Keep waiting at the intersection tomorrow. Don't mind her."

Gary nodded repeatedly. "Got it. Hang on tight, Miss Ruby. I'm starting the car."

I silently sat in front of my laptop.

When I saw Gary's fawning expression and heard Ruby saying "that sickly thing", my nails slowly dug into my palm.

True, I had forked out a huge sum of money to rent the minibus for Amelia, and I even hired a driver for 1,000 dollars, with another 1,000 dollars thrown in as a bonus.

But I didn't mind the driver letting several kids in the neighborhood on board while he was doing the school runs for Amelia.

I had allowed him to pocket the extra earnings.

But I never thought that Gary and Ruby would work together and turn the minibus into a private shuttle for the neighborhood kids.

I spent the whole night extracting the surveillance footage and driving routes of the minibus over the past two months.

Ruby had claimed that her husband Paul cared so much about the workers in the factory that he pulled some strings to get special approval from the higher-ups, and that was how they got their hands on this premium shuttle.

With that excuse, she was getting free money from families in the neighborhood. "We're charging 100 dollars per month for every child to cover fuel and maintenance. Slots are limited, so it's first come, first served."

In the footage, I could clearly see Ruby accepting cash or transfers in the minibus.

There were 16 seats in the minibus, and they were all occupied.

If Ruby and Gary collected 100 dollars per child, and there were 16 seats available, they would be raking in 1,600 dollars per month.

Ruby got the lion's share of the money while Gary was given the smaller portion.

Gary was shamelessly getting his 2,000-dollar salary from me while skimming a kickback from Ruby as well.

He was driving my vehicle while lining his pockets with shady money.

At 2:30 pm the next day, I switched to an unassuming black sedan with fake plates and parked it on the roadside opposite the school.

It was still raining. The rain wasn't as heavy as the day before, but the wind was very cold.

At 3:00 pm, the final dismissal bell rang.

Students put up their umbrellas as they rushed out of the gates.

I sat in the car, staring through the tinted window at the other side of the road.

The familiar minibus was parked at the intersection.

Gary was sitting in the driver's seat, head lowered as he scrolled on his phone.

A while later, I spotted Amelia.

She was keeping her head down as she walked toward the minibus. She was going very slowly, as if she were hesitating.

When she arrived at the minibus, she was reaching up to open the door when the door opened from the inside.

Ruby's son, a chubby 8th grader by the name of Larry Hitchborn, was blocking the entrance along with a few other boys.

Larry said, "The cougher is here again! Hey, can't you just get lost already? You cough every day, and you're covered in gross germs. We don't want whatever plague you're having."

The boys nearby joined in the laughter. "That's right. Now shoo, go away! I feel like I'm suffocating just standing next to you!"

Amelia stood outside the door.

The cold wind blew against her thin frame. She tightly clutched at her bag, her shoulders trembling ever so slightly.

She didn't argue. Instead, she just raised her head and glanced at Gary in the driver's seat.

Gary didn't even move an inch. It seemed as if he wasn't even aware of what was happening at the door.

News of Paul being taken away by the economic crime division, and also of Ruby and Gary being officially arrested, spread through the neighborhood in no time. The other kids' parents, who had followed Ruby's lead by bullying Amelia and signing the petition letter, were utterly panicked. The next morning, Aaron represented me and went door-to-door delivering legal notices to those parents. The notices demanded that they forfeit all funds associated with the illegal shuttle service Ruby had arranged, with the money handed over to the police as illicit proceeds. Also, for the parents of the kids who had insulted Amelia at the door of the minibus, we formally filed a civil lawsuit, demanding a public apology and compensation for emotional distress. As soon as the legal notices were delivered, those affected in the neighborhood seemed to have broken down right away.Desperate to clear their names and get leniency, the parents rushed over to the police station to give their statements,

Ten minutes later, in Conference Room 1 on the top floor of the factory, more than 30 senior executives and area managers sat in stiff silence. They didn't even bother with the usual pleasantries.Paul sat at the furthest end of the conference table, already broken out in a cold sweat. As outside personnel, Ruby and Gary were denied entry and were assigned to observers' seating at the back of the conference room.It wasn't until then that the panic in Ruby's heart began to fester.Joseph respectfully stood to the side, vacating the head of the table.I walked over to the spot, sweeping a glance across the room.Clearing his throat, Joseph announced through the microphone, "I shall make the official introductions. This is Mr. Caleb Reinhart, the chairman and majority shareholder of the group who acquired our factory in full last month."When he finished speaking, the whole room fell silent.Paul, who was seated at the end of the table, was stunned.Seated in the corner, Ruby co

After Dad and Mom left, the door to the office was gently closed. The office instantly went silent.Instead of getting angry, Paul picked up his coffee and took a sip from it. "Sure, you took the pen away and felt great about it, but have you ever thought about how your parents are going to face the scrutiny at work tomorrow?"The list of employees getting full medical coverage has to be submitted to the factory office by 1:00 pm. If I don't sign this document, they'll be stuck with the lowest-tier pension for the rest of their lives."He took out a cigarette. Gary immediately stepped forward with a knowing look and lit the cigarette for him.Taking a puff, Paul looked at me through the veil of smoke. "It's just a trivial issue. Your sister is ill, so it's only normal for others to be concerned about their own safety. You've called the cops, and my wife has spent the night at the police station. That should be enough for you, yes?"Drop the case now, and we'll call it even. You p

Paul slid a document titled "Letter of Forgiveness" in Dad's direction, then tapped the signature line with the tip of the pen.He said, "Your son didn't know better, and he filed a police report to get my wife arrested. If this matter blows up and ruins the factory's reputation, you probably won't get that retirement spot. Well, that's not even the worst of it. The factory may even hold your family responsible for disrupting workforce harmony."Taking a sip of his coffee, Paul continued, "Sign this, and you can prove that this is all just a misunderstanding. I'll stamp your early retirement approval tomorrow and personally deliver it to HR. I'll also approve the maximum payout from the major illness fund for you. Your daughter was born with that illness. She fainted on her own, and that's no one's responsibility."Dad's shoulders were trembling a little. He looked up, then said in a slightly bitter voice, "Paul, Amelia was sent to the ICU for emergency intervention last night, and

A sudden ringing filled my ears, and my mind instantly went blank.Right now, Amelia should be in cram school, which was about two miles from home.Gary would always send her to cram school on weekends. But today, because of the parents' pushback for the sake of this hijacked car, Amelia had no choice but to take the bus all alone."I'll be right there." After ending the call, I glared at Ruby, who was right in front of me, and at Gary, who was turning pale beside her.Startled by my glare, Ruby took a step back and bumped into her chair. "Why are you looking at me like that? You can't blame us just because your sister is sick! Are you trying to get more money from us or something?"Ignoring her, I called the general manager of the car rental company I used for the charter. One of the company's agents had also recommended Gary to me.The call was answered right away.I went straight to the point. "Put a hold on the minibus with license plate 889 right now. I'm reporting your d

With that, Ruby took out two 50-dollar bills from her purse and slid them across to me. "Here's a little something from us. Take this money and go get your sister some cough syrup so she can actually get over this thing."I quietly sat there, looking at the petition letter filled with signatures. They had no idea that the real owner of the so-called "minibus Miss Ruby pulled some strings to get" was sitting right in front of them.I didn't take the money, nor did I utter a word.Noticing that I wasn't saying anything, Ruby scoffed. "What's this? You still think you have room to argue?"She turned around and shouted out the door, "Gary! Gary Brown! Get in here!"Gary, who was smoking outside, hastily put out his cigarette and scrambled in.When he spotted me in the room, his gaze darted away for a second. He seemed to be feeling a little guilty.Pointing at me, Ruby said to Gary, "Gary, you're the driver. Your word holds the most weight here. Go ahead and tell everybody. Having
