Chapter 4

Author: Treat Me
With that, Ruby took out two 50-dollar bills from her purse and slid them across to me. "Here's a little something from us. Take this money and go get your sister some cough syrup so she can actually get over this thing."

I quietly sat there, looking at the petition letter filled with signatures.

They had no idea that the real owner of the so-called "minibus Miss Ruby pulled some strings to get" was sitting right in front of them.

I didn't take the money, nor did I utter a word.

Noticing that I wasn't saying anything, Ruby scoffed. "What's this? You still think you have room to argue?"

She turned around and shouted out the door, "Gary! Gary Brown! Get in here!"

Gary, who was smoking outside, hastily put out his cigarette and scrambled in.

When he spotted me in the room, his gaze darted away for a second. He seemed to be feeling a little guilty.

Pointing at me, Ruby said to Gary, "Gary, you're the driver. Your word holds the most weight here. Go ahead and tell everybody. Having Amelia on board poses a serious risk to road safety, doesn't it?"

Gary glanced at me.

He knew I was the one paying his salary, but he also knew very well that Ruby was the one collecting his "fuel kickback" from the parents in the room.

To protect his job and keep cashing in on both sides, he swallowed hard and gritted his teeth. "That's… That's right."

Gary leaned in and tried to make his voice low and sincere. "Mr. Reinhart, I don't want to do this to Amelia, but her coughs are getting out of hand. Her coughing is really terrifying, and it always creeps me out when I drive. I'll get distracted, see? There are a dozen kids in the minibus, so safety is my number one priority. If I get distracted and get into an accident, I can't afford to take the blame for that."

As soon as Gary finished speaking, the other parents immediately backed him up. "See? Even the driver says so! Amelia must be taken off the minibus! We can't let her on board ever again!"

Ruby leaned back in her chair and looked at me in glee.

The crowd was getting riled up.

I stood up. Then, as everyone watched, I made my way to the table.

I reached out and picked up the petition letter. Without any hesitation, I tore it to shreds right in front of the parents.

Everyone was stunned.

Ruby's expression shifted. "You brat! How dare you do that to our petition letter? Are you out of your mind?"

I looked at her coldly. "You're Paul Hitchborn's wife, right? Playing the generous host with someone else's property while pocketing 100 dollars per child in illicit cash from the parents in the group chat… Do you think you can rule the neighborhood with an iron fist just because your husband is a manager?"

Ruby was worked up. "What… That's nonsense! I personally asked the factory director for the minibus—"

Just then, my phone suddenly vibrated in my pocket.

The urgent ringtone cut Ruby off.

When I took out my phone, the words "Pineridge Hospital ER" were flashing across the screen.

I answered the call only to hear a voice asking hurriedly, "Is this the family of Amelia Reinhart?"

My heart suddenly sank. "I'm her older brother."

The voice continued, "Your sister had a severe asthma flare-up and is currently unresponsive. She was rushed here by emergency medical services. Her oxygen levels are critically low, and she's been admitted to the ICU for emergency intervention. Someone needs to come sign the paperwork with ID and payment immediately!"

News of Paul being taken away by the economic crime division, and also of Ruby and Gary being officially arrested, spread through the neighborhood in no time. The other kids' parents, who had followed Ruby's lead by bullying Amelia and signing the petition letter, were utterly panicked. The next morning, Aaron represented me and went door-to-door delivering legal notices to those parents. The notices demanded that they forfeit all funds associated with the illegal shuttle service Ruby had arranged, with the money handed over to the police as illicit proceeds. Also, for the parents of the kids who had insulted Amelia at the door of the minibus, we formally filed a civil lawsuit, demanding a public apology and compensation for emotional distress. As soon as the legal notices were delivered, those affected in the neighborhood seemed to have broken down right away.Desperate to clear their names and get leniency, the parents rushed over to the police station to give their statements,

Ten minutes later, in Conference Room 1 on the top floor of the factory, more than 30 senior executives and area managers sat in stiff silence. They didn't even bother with the usual pleasantries.Paul sat at the furthest end of the conference table, already broken out in a cold sweat. As outside personnel, Ruby and Gary were denied entry and were assigned to observers' seating at the back of the conference room.It wasn't until then that the panic in Ruby's heart began to fester.Joseph respectfully stood to the side, vacating the head of the table.I walked over to the spot, sweeping a glance across the room.Clearing his throat, Joseph announced through the microphone, "I shall make the official introductions. This is Mr. Caleb Reinhart, the chairman and majority shareholder of the group who acquired our factory in full last month."When he finished speaking, the whole room fell silent.Paul, who was seated at the end of the table, was stunned.Seated in the corner, Ruby co

After Dad and Mom left, the door to the office was gently closed. The office instantly went silent.Instead of getting angry, Paul picked up his coffee and took a sip from it. "Sure, you took the pen away and felt great about it, but have you ever thought about how your parents are going to face the scrutiny at work tomorrow?"The list of employees getting full medical coverage has to be submitted to the factory office by 1:00 pm. If I don't sign this document, they'll be stuck with the lowest-tier pension for the rest of their lives."He took out a cigarette. Gary immediately stepped forward with a knowing look and lit the cigarette for him.Taking a puff, Paul looked at me through the veil of smoke. "It's just a trivial issue. Your sister is ill, so it's only normal for others to be concerned about their own safety. You've called the cops, and my wife has spent the night at the police station. That should be enough for you, yes?"Drop the case now, and we'll call it even. You p

Paul slid a document titled "Letter of Forgiveness" in Dad's direction, then tapped the signature line with the tip of the pen.He said, "Your son didn't know better, and he filed a police report to get my wife arrested. If this matter blows up and ruins the factory's reputation, you probably won't get that retirement spot. Well, that's not even the worst of it. The factory may even hold your family responsible for disrupting workforce harmony."Taking a sip of his coffee, Paul continued, "Sign this, and you can prove that this is all just a misunderstanding. I'll stamp your early retirement approval tomorrow and personally deliver it to HR. I'll also approve the maximum payout from the major illness fund for you. Your daughter was born with that illness. She fainted on her own, and that's no one's responsibility."Dad's shoulders were trembling a little. He looked up, then said in a slightly bitter voice, "Paul, Amelia was sent to the ICU for emergency intervention last night, and

A sudden ringing filled my ears, and my mind instantly went blank.Right now, Amelia should be in cram school, which was about two miles from home.Gary would always send her to cram school on weekends. But today, because of the parents' pushback for the sake of this hijacked car, Amelia had no choice but to take the bus all alone."I'll be right there." After ending the call, I glared at Ruby, who was right in front of me, and at Gary, who was turning pale beside her.Startled by my glare, Ruby took a step back and bumped into her chair. "Why are you looking at me like that? You can't blame us just because your sister is sick! Are you trying to get more money from us or something?"Ignoring her, I called the general manager of the car rental company I used for the charter. One of the company's agents had also recommended Gary to me.The call was answered right away.I went straight to the point. "Put a hold on the minibus with license plate 889 right now. I'm reporting your d
