{Zoe}

I woke up, excited about my lunch date with Officer Matheson. I texted him last night and we agreed to “hang out." I envisioned us not leaving my bedroom, but Officer Matheson could have other ideas like actually having lunch and wanting to get to know me, which was not something I was looking forward to. I enjoyed being single, and I wouldn’t be ready to seriously date someone for a couple more years but in the meantime, I would have a hot girl summer all year round.

Huh. English is not in bed with me. That's odd.

English tended to sleep a lot longer than I did, and he never left the bed before me.

Maybe he got bold and decided to use the doggy door that I had installed for him yesterday?

I completed my morning routine and dressed casually in a school athletic tank and cutoff shorts, and went hunting for my beloved pup. Ten minutes later, I had checked every single nook and cranny of the house and couldn’t locate English. The doorbell rang before I could make it to the backyard. If that was Officer Matheson, then he was an entire hour early, and low-key that annoyed the shit out of me.

What if I were still lying in bed looking like Medusa with crust in my eyes and drool on my face?

“What does this pasty motherfucker want now?” I lowly growled, staring at my neighbor through the peephole. I swung open the door and gave him a not-so-friendly glare. “The fuck you want?”

“Wow. Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed,” Elijah remarked.

“I’m not sure what you’re here for, but I need you to move this along,” I growled as I placed my hands on my hips. His eyes traveled up and down my body, resting specifically on my lower half. “Are you done eye raping me?” I asked in disgust a few seconds later.

“Yes-I mean no-I mean, I’m sorry, here,” Elijah said, shoving a bouquet of flowers towards me.

“What is this for?” I asked, cautiously eyeing the yellow roses. “These aren’t some crazy jungle Amazonian roses that’ll kill me, right?”

“Why on Earth would you think they would kill you?”

“I don’t know they could have thorns with some crazy toxins in them that enter your bloodstream once you’re pricked, and we are sworn enemies.”

“You must still be drunk from yesterday,” Elijah scoffed. “They are simply yellow roses from the local florist to convey friendship, and if you don’t believe me, I can show you the receipt. I feel horrible for the way we got off, and I was hoping you would let bygones be bygones.”

I squinted my eyes at him skeptically. Elijah appeared to be genuinely sincere, but his sudden desire to make peace was unnerving to me. “So, can I call you Eli now?” I teased.

“Uh, I don’t think we’re there yet.”

“Okay. I understand, Eli,” I said dismissively as I inhaled the roses. “Well, if there’s nothing else, I need to go and look for English.”

“Your dog?”

“Yeah. I woke up this morning and he wasn’t in bed, and I haven’t been able to find him in the house. I was just headed to the backyard to search for him before you came,” I explained.

“I’m sure he’s just exploring his new home and you two just keep missing each other. He’s probably tucked under the bed or something.”

“You don’t understand though. English and I have been inseparable since my grandparents gifted him to me,” I snapped.

“I’m sorry. I’ll let you get to it then,” Elijah apologized. “For what it’s worth I hope you find him.”

I spent the next 50 minutes looking for English, both inside and outside. By the time Officer Matheson arrived, I was in a full-blown panic. I hadn’t even taken the time to acknowledge the Chinese food he picked up from my favorite Chinese eatery. My panic turned into pure despair when Cole found a hole in my fence that was big enough for English to get out of.

I spent the next hour bawling my eyes out while Cole went and searched the area near my house and asked the neighbors if they had seen English. Once I finally got myself together, I jumped on my computer and made missing pet flyers. Brianna and Samuel came as soon as their classes were over and canvassed the neighborhood with us, but there was no such luck.

I sat on my porch steps with Cole next to me and stared up at the stars, praying that wherever English was that he was safe. “I’m sorry that this day turned out different than you planned,” I apologized as I felt his knee bump mine.

“It’s okay. My job is to protect and serve, right?”

“Yeah, but you’re off the clock, so that doesn’t count.”

“A police officer is never off the clock.”

  • Party Animals   Delivering a Message

**Elijah**An hour later, I managed to get us both cleaned up and in bed. Zoe had apologized profusely during our shower about throwing up on me. She even tried to reason with me and told me she was doing me a favor and preparing me for those four kids I was gunning for because babies were notorious for throwing up. I wanted to argue that there was a vast difference between baby vomit and grown-ass vomiting, but I was not about to argue with a drunk woman.I had barely been asleep for an hour when Zoe's phone began buzzing. I tried to ignore it, but it sounded like she was receiving text after text. The text messages stopped, but then she began receiving phone calls. I snatched up the phone and answered it."Hello?"He didn't answer. "Michael, what do you need?" I seethed."Uhhhh, is Zoe there?"Michael was slurring. He must have returned home and continued drinking. "Yeah, Michael, if I have her phone, she's here.""Put her on the phone.""I won't, and even if I could, she's sleeping

  • Party Animals   The Aftermath

**Elijah**I arrived at Zoe’s house an hour later, and Michael didn’t hesitate to jump out of the Jeep as soon as it shifted into park. I didn’t blame him. Awkward couldn’t describe how the remainder of the ride home went after our “talk.”My aggressiveness threw Michael off because, usually, when it came to our disagreements, I always took the passive approach; however, I couldn’t afford to be passive about the woman I could see as my future wife. Michael got off easy. He should be glad I was still riding the high from our date last night or I might have drowned him in the river.I was snapped out of my murderous thoughts by the sound of Zoe throwing up in the backseat. I prayed she found the plastic bag I left for her. I was almost afraid of turning around.“You all right back there, Mama?” I asked once she quieted. I took a peek at the rear-view mirror to see her open her mouth to respond when she threw up again. I patted myself on the back for thinking ahead and supplying the bag.

  • Party Animals   Floating II

**Elijah**I wished I could say I enjoyed the rest of the float, but I’d be lying. I was downright irate. I had my suspicions, and I still didn’t want to believe them, but I couldn’t help but wonder if Michael had feelings for Zoe. His behavior that day had been sketchy as hell, which, unfortunately, put me in an awkward position. There was no way around it. I would have to confront him.For once, I encouraged Zoe to drink, hoping she’d pass out in the Jeep and I could address my concerns with Michael without her butting in. I wondered if she had her suspicions as well. How did Michael behave towards Zoe when they were alone? I noticed Michael had been keeping Zoe out longer and longer on their visits, and now I know why. I trusted Zoe–1000%, but it was my brother I had difficulty trusting. All those talks he had with me about my relationship with Zoe and not getting serious didn’t seem so innocent any longer.I fully understood the appeal when it came to Zoe and how someone could eas

**Elijah**"No thanks. I'm good," I found myself saying for the fiftieth time as the boxed wine that was now a bag of wine was offered to me. I was sticking with my beer and had no desire to "slap the bag." I looked over at Michael, who hadn't as much as uttered a word since we started. He’s probably still sore from how I spoke to him earlier, but I'm not sorry. He was getting on my nerves. For all that shit he was talking about earlier about Zoe and her drinking, he had surpassed her, and I wondered if he would be able to make it to work in the morning.Zoe and her friends chatted excitedly about their trip to South Padre Island; deep down, I dreaded it. For one, I would miss Zoe like crazy, and for two, I was concerned about her safety. I didn’t want her to get into a situation where she was injured or some asshole attempted to take advantage of her.I lay back, closed my eyes, and tried to distract myself with the sun's warm rays. Spring had just begun, but it already felt like ear

  • Party Animals   Jeep Shenanigans

**Elijah**I grabbed the back of her neck and pulled her down to me. The kiss began slow and sweet, but her traveling hands made me impatient with need. I wanted more. I needed to feel her, taste her, consume her. I bit her bottom lip and eased my hands underneath her top to massage her breasts. She moaned lowly, and I couldn't help but take advantage and slip my tongue in. I soon ripped her shirt off, and she quickly returned the favor. "Ow!" I jumped at the feeling of her tweaking one of my nipples."My bad, Daddy," she giggled, leaning down to flick it with her moist tongue. I eagerly pulled her back into a kiss and didn't realize we had an audience until Sammy ruined all the fun and asked us to stop dry-humping so they could get in the water.Regrettably, Zoe removed her lips from mine, but I pulled her back down to whisper in her ear. "Tell him there's nothing dry about it because I'm sure you're soaked.""Eli, what's gotten into you? It's usually me who's wildly inappropriate,”

  • Party Animals   Masking the Pain

**Elijah****Earlier**I drove down the highway and grimaced at the sight of Zoe chugging her third beer. Moments ago, she had polished off a handful of Jell-O shots, and I was fearful that she would blackout before we made it to the river. I tried to tell her to take it easy, but I was quickly reminded to mind my business and that she was “built for this.”I was grateful I had come. There was no telling what condition Zoe might’ve been in by the end of the day."Mama?""What's up?" she asked, barely paying me any attention as she rapped to the lyrics on the radio. "I might be wrong, but did you eat anything today?""Negative.""You can't be drinking like that on an empty stomach. You should've eaten something when we stopped this morning.""I was not in the mood for drive-thru breakfast, and maybe if I didn't have to babysit you in the store, then I would've had time to fix myself something to eat. Don't worry, though; we have snacks to eat on the river. Just relax, Eli. This isn't m
