I just kept staring at Zayne, waiting for him to laugh and say he was joking.

How did we get to the part where he was asking me to marry him?

But the longer I looked, the more I realized he was serious. There was no trace of humor in his face, only the weight of every word he had said.

“Zayne,” I breathed, trying to laugh, trying to find some balance. “You can’t be serious. You probably didn’t think this through.”

“I did.” His voice was firm, not a hint of doubt in it. “I’m tired, Mira. Tired of pretending that what we have isn’t worth fighting for. I don’t want to keep circling the pain. I want to start over.”

The weight of his forgiveness settled against my chest until it hurt to breathe. It was too much, too kind, and I didn’t deserve it, definitely not this soon.

“Why?” I asked softly. “Why do you still want me after everything?”

His answer came without pause. “Because I still believe in us, even when you don’t. I want to teach you how to love me.”

The engagement became public just as expected.By morning, my phone wouldn’t stop lighting up. Notifications, articles, congratulations, and heart emojis flooded the screen.Model Mira Leigh Engaged to Businessman Zayne Reeve. They called it a fairytale. They said Zayne had finally won the battle, that I had found peace at last.Peace. The word almost made me laugh.Reading strangers’ opinions about my happiness while staring at the ring glimmering under the morning light made me realize how serious everything had become.I turned my phone facedown and exhaled.Whenever I feel cornered, I work. It is how I escape. Now that I was trending again, the jobs poured in. Endless fittings, meetings, shoots.I said yes to all of it. Anything that could make me feel functional.I smiled when the cameras were on, and shut down the moment they turned away.I hadn’t spoken to Romi since the day I confessed everything.I hadn’t called Drew back either; he had left six voice notes screaming that I “

  • Play Me Like You Mean It   CHAPTER 72 – Everything Left Unsaid

I left Zayne’s house without taking any of his gifts. The bags, the perfume, the dress, every piece of love he had gathered from different cities stayed where he left them. I didn’t deserve any of it.I wasn’t expecting forgiveness either. I knew I didn’t deserve that too.So I did the only right thing left. I moved on.I didn’t call Zayne. I didn’t show up at his house or send long explanations. The era of the Reeves brothers in my life was over.It had been a wild ride, and honestly, they both changed me in ways I can’t unlearn. If I could rewind time, maybe I would do a few things differently. But some lessons only come wrapped in messy situations.Work was all I had left, and for that I was grateful.A new campaign came in from a fashion house in Houston, and I threw myself into it. The travel, the schedules, the noise, everything that could keep me too busy to think. The shoot was fast-paced, all spotlights and charged energy. The models were warm, the creative team professional,

  • Play Me Like You Mean It   CHAPTER 71 – The Weight of Guilt

Living with the guilt was worse than the act itself. It was slower, eating at me steadily like swallowing glass one piece at a time.I kept waiting for the day it would dull, but it didn’t. It sat under my skin, humming. There was no one I could tell. Jesse was too young; Drew would dramatize it; and Zayne, he was the last person who should ever hear the truth, and he was far away in Canada. That left Romi. She’d been scarce lately since landing a better job. I’d practically bullied her out of that depressing café months ago, and now she managed events for a fashion startup. Her voice on the phone sounded lighter than I’d ever heard it.“It’s my day off today,” she said. “You sound weird. Are you alright? You know what, come over.”I didn’t think twice. I grabbed my keys and drove, gripping the wheel tight while vibing to trap songs, letting the beat distract me.When I got to Romi’s apartment, she opened the door barefoot, hair piled up. Her space was warm, small, and messy in the be

Cade stirred, and his voice reached me.“Mira,” he said softly.I was still at the edge of the bed, clutching the sheet around me, my pulse wild from the mess this was.He gave a faint smile. “Good morning.”I stared at him like he’d lost his mind. “Good morning? Really?” My voice cracked on the words. He blinked, confused. “What’s wrong?”“What’s wrong?” I repeated, a sharp, humorless laugh slipping out. “Cade, I just made a huge mistake. Why didn’t you stop me?”His expression shifted, hurt and disbelief flickering at once. He sat up, raking a hand through his hair. “Stop you? You agreed to it. You wanted it. Don’t rewrite it now.”“It was a mistake,” I said too fast and harshly. His voice rose, low but shaking. “A mistake? You’re calling the night we shared a mistake, Mira?”I flinched. For a second the way he said it stole my words. “Don’t you get it, Cade? Can’t you see what we’ve done? I cheated on Zayne. With you, his brother.” I pressed my palms to my face. “God, how did I wal

I wasn’t expecting to see Cade here. I’d told Jesse they could meet, just not in my house. The question he asked annoyed me. Kim coming for me was because of him. I turned toward him, confused and angry all at once. Why was he even here?Every time I tried to trace the start of my problems, the line always led back to him.“It’s you,” I said, my words sharp and furious. “Everything always leads back to you. Your girlfriend, your ex, whatever, she’s out there trying to ruin me, twisting Zayne’s head, and you’re asking why I’m crying?”Cade stood, came closer, and took my wrist gently. “Sit down.”I hesitated, then sat on the couch beside him. He kept his voice calm.“First, Kim isn’t my girlfriend anymore. That ended months ago. And if this somehow circles back to me, I’m sorry. But don’t let her get to you. Kimberly’s too small to twist Zayne’s head. He’ll come around, he’s solid.”I looked at him, surprised. “You’re defending him now?”A faint smile touched his mouth. “He’s my brothe
