Chapter Forty-Six: Almost

Harper

They didn’t talk much on the way home.

The windows were cracked just enough to let in the warm night air, and the buzz of prom still lingered—music pulsing faintly in her memory, whispers fading, that kiss still glowing on her mouth like a secret she hadn’t finished unwrapping.

Jaxon held her hand the entire ride. Not tightly. Not possessively.

Just enough to say I’m here, if you want me to be.

When they pulled into her driveway, the porch light was on, and the neighborhood was quiet. Her dad’s truck was gone, just like he said it would be—overnight shift.

Jaxon turned off the engine but didn’t move right away.

Neither did she.

He looked over, smiling just a little. “So… still not sure about that real date?”

She hesitated, heart thudding. “I’m just not ready for labels.”

“Fair,” he said. “Labels are overrated.”

Silence stretched.

She opened the door. “But… do you want to come in?”

He blinked. “Your dad—?”

“Gone till morning.”

He nodded once, got out, a

Chapter Forty-Seven: BustedHarperThe warmth of the morning sun hit Harper’s face before the guilt had a chance to.Her head was resting on Jaxon’s bare chest, their limbs tangled beneath the old throw blanket on the living room floor. For a few precious seconds, it felt like they were tucked inside some hidden little pocket of the universe—quiet, warm, and wrapped in everything that had unfolded between them the night before. And then—Click. The front door opened.Keys. Footsteps.“Harper?”Her father’s voice—groggy, sharp, and very much inside the house.Panic drop-kicked her straight in the stomach. She sat up so fast she almost cracked her head on the coffee table. Jaxon jolted awake behind her, squinting, his hand already searching for his hoodie like it might magically erase the evidence of his bare chest and extremely compromising location.“Oh no,” Harper whispered. “Oh my god. Oh no no no no no.”Too late. Her dad rounded the corner into the living room, clearly expecting d

Chapter Forty-Five: Homecoming CrownsJaxonHe stood at her front door in gray joggers, a hoodie, and worn-out sneakers—heart thudding loud enough he swore her whole neighborhood could hear it.No flowers. No corsage. Just hope. And a stupid, fluttering ache in his chest that hadn’t gone away since the moment she didn’t say no.Harper opened the door slowly. She was barefoot, in leggings and an oversized hoodie, her hair in a messy bun, mascara smudged under her eyes like she hadn’t planned on seeing anyone. Her jaw dropped. He lifted a hand. “Hey.”She blinked. “You’re wearing a hoodie.”He looked down at himself. “So are you.”“I thought you were going to prom.”“I am,” he said. “But not without you.”“Jaxon…”“No pressure. I mean it. If you say no, I’ll just sit on your porch all night. Maybe order us milkshakes. Or tater tots. But if you do wanna go... I figured we could just go like this.”She stared at him, speechless. No speeches. No suits. No pretending.Just him.And her.Exa

Chapter Forty-Three: Flowers and FalloutHarperIt was a little after ten when her phone buzzed on the nightstand. Not a notification she expected. Not a name she’d seen pop up in a while.Jaxon Brooks:You looked at me today. That has to count for something. Right?Harper stared at it. Her thumb hovered over the screen.Down the hall, she could hear Mia whisper-laughing on FaceTime with Eli, soft and happy and safe. Her dad had passed out on the couch again, the TV mumbling about baseball scores to no one in particular. She shouldn’t reply.Answering would only open the door she’d been holding shut for weeks. But somehow, her fingers moved anyway.Harper:I was looking at the wall behind you. Don’t flatter yourself. His reply was immediate.Jaxon:A win’s a win. Can I count that as progress? She didn’t answer.Because deep down, she knew it was.Saturday morning, the doorbell rang at 9:22 a.m.Harper was still half-asleep, tangled in blankets, hair a mess, when her dad shouted up the

Chapter Forty-One: Friction and FirstsHarperHarper didn’t need Monday. She was already unraveling. The morning felt like sandpaper—rough, irritating, impossible to ignore. Every hallway glance felt too long. Every whispered “Did you hear…?” too sharp. She pulled her hoodie tighter around her face, headphones in, no music. It was easier to pretend she didn’t notice the stares when she drowned herself in static.Mia fell into step beside her. “You okay?”Harper stared straight ahead. “Sure.”Mia raised an eyebrow. “Because you ghosted me last night and your 'sure' sounds like a lie soaked in denial.”“I didn’t feel like talking.”“This about Jaxon?”No answer. Just a flicker of Harper’s fingers gripping her backpack strap.Mia sighed. “He texted you again, didn’t he?”Harper nodded once.“He’s trying.”“I don’t know what I want,” Harper whispered. But that wasn’t true. She knew exactly what she wanted. She just didn’t know if she was allowed to want it.Because the lake—that night—had

  • Playing Hard To Get   Push and Pull

Push and PullHarperShe was halfway through folding a pile of laundry she’d been pretending didn’t exist since Wednesday when her phone lit up across the nightstand.Jaxon:Can I take you out? Like… out-out. A real date. Just me and you.Her hands paused mid-fold, holding a t-shirt she couldn’t even remember wearing. Her heart did that thing again—leapt, then twisted. It would’ve been so easy to smile. To say yes.To fall. But easy didn’t mean safe.Because yeah, she’d felt it. All of it. The lake house. The stolen glances. The library after hours, where everything had been quiet except for the sound of their breathing and the electric buzz under her skin. The way he looked at her like she wasn’t just someone, but someone he saw. Those weren’t just moments. They were pieces.Pieces of something that felt like it could matter. But mattering didn’t make it smart. Her name was still being whispered in hallways, twisted in someone else’s version of the truth. Kenzie’s voice still echoed
