LOGIN“My love, finish your food, okay? Don’t waste anything,” I gently reminded my son, Madrid, as he took his seat at the table. Look at him, so eager and ready for school. My boy is now ten years old. He's bright, handsome, and, most importantly, full of love for me.
“Yes, mommy. I’ll eat a lot,” he answered, flashing his wide, cheerful smile. I couldn’t help but smile in return every time I looked at him. He was simply too adorable. Clearly, he got that from me. I handed him a glass of milk to boost his strength and immunity. I didn’t want him getting sick, especially when I wasn’t around. It’s not that I neglect him, but if I don’t work, who else will provide for all his needs? It’s just me and, of course, his uncle and grandmother. While we were finishing breakfast, I heard a car pull up outside the house. A few seconds later, there was a knock on the door, and it slowly opened. “Good morning,” Charlie greeted with his usual bright smile. “Uncle Charlie!” Madrid exclaimed joyfully, running to him. The kid was always happy to see Charlie. “Come eat with us,” I offered, but Charlie politely waved his hand. “No, I’m good. I already had breakfast. I just dropped by to drive you both to school and work. How about that, Madrid?” he said, turning to my son. Madrid nodded eagerly, his grin reaching his ears. “Huh? But won’t you be late for work? We’re still eating,” I asked, a bit concerned. “No, it’s fine. My shift starts later anyway,” he replied casually before sitting down and gently patting Madrid’s hair. A soft smile formed on his face as he looked at my boy. “You’ve grown so much, Madrid! How old are you now?” he asked. Madrid held up nine fingers in response. “Feels like just yesterday you were a baby. You’re still cute though. Who did you get that from?” Charlie teased, and Madrid pointed at him. “Hey, I’m the one who gave birth to you! You should be pointing at me,” I joked. Madrid simply made a peace sign, and both Charlie and I burst out laughing. Aside from mom and Matthew, Charlie was also one of the first people to see Madrid when he was still a baby. He had been my loyal online selling customer back then. Since then, he often visited me, bringing food. Sometimes, the very ones I had been craving. It felt like having a guardian angel whenever I was in need. Just like before, even now, Charlie wanted to step into the role of a father figure for Madrid. He still courted me, persistently, even after all these years. Yet, I couldn’t give him an answer... not yet. Sometimes, I felt guilty, as if I were giving him false hope. It wasn’t that I didn’t appreciate him, I just hadn’t felt that kind of love again. Still, I hoped that maybe one day, when the right time came, I could learn to love him back. “Madrid, don’t you think your mom should finally say yes to me? That way, you’ll have a dad,” Charlie teased playfully. Wow. Really? He had to say that out loud. "Madrid, what did I tell you?" I said with a half-smile. "Don't get involved in adults' conversations," my son replied politely. I gave Charlie a triumphant look, proud of my smart boy. “Oh? Okay. Fair enough,” Charlie said, chuckling. “Let Mama decide for herself. M-Madrid doesn’t want to decide for her. I’m... I’m still young,” my son added with such innocence that Charlie couldn’t help but laugh again. “See? My son’s clever, isn’t he? He gets that from me,” I said proudly. Madrid nodded, then went back to finishing his breakfast. “By the way, Mathia,” Charlie said after a while, “I just remembered, I’m restocking soon. I already sent the list of new orders through message. Could you check them later?” “Sure,” I replied with a nod. When Madrid and I were done eating, I unplugged all the appliances, locked the door, and got into Charlie’s car. He offered to drive us. First, to Madrid’s school, then to my workplace. The school wasn’t too far away. Normally, Madrid and I would just take a jeepney. It only took ten minutes at most. But since we had Charlie’s car today, it would probably take just five minutes, depending on the traffic. As soon as we arrived at the school gate, Madrid moves out of the car. He gave both me and Charlie a kiss on the cheek before heading inside. I couldn’t help smiling as I watched him walk through the gate. The feeling that washed over me, it was strange. It was like a mix of happiness, pride, and something that made my heart flutter. “Tears of joy?” Charlie asked suddenly. That’s when I realized, tears had already started streaming down my cheeks. I hadn’t even noticed. He started the car again, driving toward the mall where I worked. “I’m just... happy,” I said softly. “It’s like I suddenly remembered everything I went through since Madrid came into my life. You know that feeling when your strength just refills itself? That’s exactly how I feel. Even after all these years, that feeling never left.” “I really admire you, you know,” Charlie said sincerely. “Just imagine, since your pregnancy, up until now that Madrid’s already nine, you’ve managed everything. That’s amazing.” “Thank you,” I said, smiling faintly. “But honestly, it’s also because of mom and Matthew's help. If I didn’t have them by my side while raising my son, I don’t think I could’ve done it alone.” Charlie smiled warmly, his eyes soft with quiet admiration, before focusing back on the road ahead. After a few more minutes of talking, Karen excused herself and went home since she still had work the next day. So now, only Madrid, Charlie, and I were left. Matthew also texted that he would head straight to the hospital after changing his clothes.“Doctor, what about this? My mom still hasn’t woken up,” I asked when the doctor entered our room.“Don’t worry. We’re monitoring her vital signs, and there’s no problem. Just let her rest for now. Her blood sugar is also gradually returning to normal,” the doctor explained to me.“Is that so? Thank you,” was all I managed to say. It felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my chest after hearing that. She was almost there—my mom would get better soon.“Alright, I’ll leave you for now,” the doctor said before stepping out. Charlie gently rubbed my back to calm me down.“I told you, your aunt will be fine,” Charlie said as I struggled to hold back my tears. I faced him and gave him a bitter smile.“Mathia,” Matthew said when he arrived.
It is Sunday today, and I am with my son, Madrid, watching over my mother. Nurses and doctors keep coming in to check on her. I have already sent a photo as proof to ma’am Sofia that I am at the hospital. According to her message on Viber, she will show it to our boss so my absence will be considered valid.“Mom, grandma will get better, right?” my son asked, breaking the silence between us.“Of course, my child. Why did you ask that? Grandma is doing just fine. We’re just waiting for her to wake up so her recovery can continue and we can finally go home,” I replied as I gently stroked his head.“I really miss grandma,” my son said softly. I hugged him and kissed the top of his head because I knew how sad he was about what happened to his grandmother. All of us were deeply worried about her.I turned my head when the door opened. I saw Karen arrive.“Hi,” my son greeted her. Karen waved back at him and smiled.“Karen, you came to visit? How did you know we were here at the hospital?”
“Mathia, you’ve been spacing out for a while now. Is there a problem?” Aileen asked me. We were currently on our lunch break, but I couldn’t eat properly because my mind kept drifting to how my mom was doing. I had no appetite at all.“I’m just worried about my mom. She’s in the hospital right now. She was rushed there last night—Wait... I forgot to ask ma’am Sofia if I could be absent for a day. Tss!” I said to them.“Eat first. You might end up getting sick yourself,” Von told me.“What happened? Why was your mom hospitalized?” Aileen asked again.“Someone tried to snatch her bag while she was on her way home last night, so she fought back. She got shot,” I explained weakly. I saw shock and concern clearly written on their faces.“Let’s visit your mom later. We’ll come with you,” Von said.“Yeah, so we can meet her and check on her,” Aileen added.“Oh... aren’t you both busy?” I asked, just to be sure.“No. It’s fine. Besides, we’re already friends here at work, so it’s only right t
I left the house early and locked the door since neither Madrid nor Matthew was home. My brother took a leave from work to look after Mom and brought Madrid with him since he didn’t have school today.I was currently riding a tricycle on my way to Charlie’s house. The trip took more than ten minutes before I arrived. I found him watering the plants, so I knocked on the gate.“Mathia?” he asked, as if he couldn’t believe I was standing outside his house. He immediately opened the gate for me.“H-Hello. Uhmm... these are the things you were supposed to pick up. I delivered them myself so w-we could talk. I-If that’s okay?” I explained.“Come in. Go inside,” he invited, so I walked in. “I’ll take that,” he added as he carried the large box I was holding. He also opened the door for me so we could enter the house. He asked me to sit in the living room and served me hot chocolate and a sandwich before sitting beside me.“Uhmm... I really came early so we could talk. S-Sorry about that, Cha
When I arrived home, I immediately prepared the remaining shirts and cologne that Charlie had ordered. I planned to personally deliver them to him tomorrow so we could talk before I go to work.“Mama, I don’t have school tomorrow. It’s Saturday. How about you?” my child asked.“I still have work. I need to finish my two-week training before I can get a day off. Once I have a day off again, we’ll go out and bond,” I explained to my child.“Okay, mama,” he replied politely, making me gently pinch his cheek in delight. After wrapping everything, Matthew arrived just in time.“Are those for Charlie? Let me take them so I can head home already,” he asked.“No, not now. Do you have work tomorrow? Just take me to him so I can personally deliver these. I also need to talk to him,” I explained to Matthew.“Why, mama? Did you and Uncle Charlie fight?” Madrid suddenly asked. I smiled at him and shook my head.“No. We just have something important to talk about,” I replied. “Matthew, please bring
“Not even a single chance? You didn’t see anything in Charlie?” Mom asked again.“Even if he’s kind, attentive, thoughtful, handsome, and well-off, there’s still nothing. I really can’t see myself with him for life,” I answered.“Why? Don’t tell me you still love your former boyfriend?” Mom asked. My forehead creased at that.“No, Mom. Why would I still love that person? He left us,” I replied. “I just don’t want to... for now.”“Sigh, my child. Why don’t you let Charlie enter your heart? It’s fear that keeps it closed. How will you know if he’s the one for you or not if you won’t give him a chance?” Mom asked.I remained silent as she let out a deep sigh.“You know what? There’s something I haven’t told you and Matthew yet. Did you know that your father and I weren’t really meant for each other?” she asked. Curious, I furrowed my brows.“How can you say that?” I asked.“When we were in high school, he liked my famous friend, Trina. She was rich and her family was well-known. Since sh
